Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come. Rev.
14:7

In 1844 our great High Priest entered the most holy place of the heavenly
sanctuary, to begin the work of the investigative judgment.

As the books of record are opened in the judgment, the lives of all who have
believed on Jesus come in review before God. Beginning with those who first
lived upon the earth, our Advocate presents the cases of each successive
generation, and closes with the living. Every name is mentioned, every case
closely investigated. Names are accepted, names rejected. When any have sins
remaining upon the books of record, unrepented of and unforgiven, their
names will be blotted out of the book of life. . . .

We are now living in the great day of atonement. In the typical service,
while the high priest was making the atonement for Israel, all were required
to afflict their souls by repentance of sin and humiliation before the Lord,
lest they be cut off from among the people. In like manner, all who would
have their names retained in the book of life, should now, in the few
remaining days of their probation, afflict their souls before God by sorrow
for sin and true repentance. There must be deep, faithful searching of
heart. . . . There is earnest warfare before all who would subdue the evil
tendencies that strive for the mastery. The work of preparation is an
individual work. We are not saved in groups. The purity and devotion of one
will not offset the want of these qualities in another. . . . Every one must
be tested, and found without spot or wrinkle or any such thing.

All who have truly repented of sin, and by faith claimed the blood of Christ
as their atoning sacrifice, have had pardon entered against their names in
the books of heaven; as they have become partakers of the righteousness of
Christ, and their characters are found to be in harmony with the law of God,
their sins will be blotted out, and they themselves will be accounted worthy
of eternal life. The Lord declares, . . . "I, even I, am he that blotteth
out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins."
Isa. 43:25.

Rob I am not a teacher or a Bible Scholar but I will try.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church believes in the Spirit of Prophecy and we belive that this gift was given to Ellen G. White. This is one of the statements from one of many of her books on this and other topics.

Using the date 457 BC, where Ezra issued the decree to restore and rebuild Jersusalem (Ezra 7) as the starting date for the 2300 day prophecy, found in Daniel 8:14, reaches to 1844. Jesus, as our High Priest went into the Most Holy Place at this time to start the Investigative judgment. I will put a few links here to web pages that explain all this alot better than I can.

This is from a site called: The Patmos Papers.
I have copied his work on this topic to a separate site because when I would put his URL here for this topic it would not go to the topic but to his home page. I will also include his home page as he has some other good material to study:

23. Christ's Ministry in the Heavenly Sanctuary:
There is a sanctuary in heaven, the true tabernacle which the Lord set up and not man. In it Christ ministers on our behalf, making available to believers the benefits of His atoning sacrifice offered once for all on the cross. He was inaugurated as our great High Priest and began His intercessory ministry at the time of His ascension. In 1844, at the end of the prophetic period of 2300 days, He entered the second and last phase of His atoning ministry. It is a work of investigative judgment which is part of the ultimate disposition of all sin, typified by the cleansing of the ancient Hebrew sanctuary on the Day of Atonement. In that typical service the sanctuary was cleansed with the blood of animal sacrifices, but the heavenly things are purified with the perfect sacrifice of the blood of Jesus. The investigative judgment reveals to heavenly intelligences who among the dead are asleep in Christ and therefore, in Him, are deemed worthy to have part in the first resurrection. It also makes manifest who among the living are abiding in Christ, keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, and in Him, therefore, are ready for translation into His everlasting kingdom. This judgment vindicates the justice of God in saving those who believe in Jesus. It declares that those who have remained loyal to God shall receive the kingdom. The completion of this ministry of Christ will mark the close of human probation before the Second Advent.
