The thread Fear Not (sermon by Arnold Sy Go) is closely related to this week's topic. That sermon focused on the events of the Red Sea crossing, and why God led them to that dead end in the first place.

One of the reasons I see is that God wanted to show them that He can take care of them if they trust Him. Even that which terrifies them so much is no problem for God. He wanted them to learn that if they stick with Him, there's really nothing to be scared about. "Fear not," Moses told them, because he knew that he was with God.

Could it be for the same reason that God asked Abraham to sacrifice his one and only son?

Possible, but I think that's kind of a stretch. But a common thread is our trust in God to fulfill His promises.
