Web Sites of Interest to Birders

Here are some websites that have a nice variety of information for birders. These are all non-commercial sites, though some do contain offers of books and software for sale. Not all of the links on all of the pages work, but they all do contain much interesting and helpful information. I am not including birding magazine websites at this time, but may add them later.

These sites contain a variety of information on feeding wild birds. Some of them have some very nice charts of the food and feeder preferences of various birds. You will also find tips for handling unwanted “guests” and answers to questions you may have.

Here are some web sites that contain free plans that you can use to make your own bird feeders and birdhouses.

USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: contains links to plans for several bird houses and feeders, as well as photography blinds. Patuxent Bird Identification Center: This site has photos and information to aid in the identification of a large number of North American wild birds. It could be very useful to those who do not have a good field guide.

Would you like to watch peregrine falcons nest and raise their young? Now you can, without even leaving your home, thanks to the Canadian Peregrine Foundation. Webcams have been set up at three peregrine nesting sites, and you can view photos of these falcon families any time during daylight hours. These are not video clips, but the photos will refresh every 60 seconds. There is also a daily log of the birds’ activities. The fledglings are fitted with transmitters, and you can follow their journeys by clicking on the Project Track ‘em link. http://www.peregrine-foundation.ca

It seems that the camera at the Ottawa site is not being operated at this time, as the photo has not been updated since January 16, but the log is being kept up to date.
