List of Retired Hurricanes--Is Your Name on It? - 06/06/01 11:11 PM

Now that the Atlantic hurricane season has started, it's time to batten down the hatches and keep an eye on the sea.

Sometimes we "pull for" hurricanes that have our name on them. My name is Andrew--moniker for the baddest hurricane (financially) the U.S. has ever seen.

The following is a list of other hurricanes that have been so destructive or notorious that they have been officially retired. Is your name among them?

KEY
+Within the list of top 37 deadliest U.S. hurricanes
*Within the list of the top 31 costliest U.S. hurricanes (in 1990 dollars)
(Measurements only available through 1992 for storms that affected the U.S.)

NOTE:
"Carol" was used again to denote a hurricane in the mid-Atlantic Ocean in 1965. However, because the name does not appear after that time, it is assumed that the name was retired retrospectively for the damages caused by the 1954 storm of the same name.

Some of the most deadly and costly storms occurred before hurricanes were named and are not reflected in the list.

It's not my name but I surely remember Opal. We were living in coastal Alabama when it blew through. It was quite a storm. We were just far enough away that it didn't take the roof off!

In October 15th, 1954 rains from Hurricane Hazel killed over 80 people in Toronto.

She came up through New York State and actually gained strength from the waters of lake Ontario.

Hazel was a minimal hurricane by the time she hit T.O. (75-80 mph) but the rains were very hard on the ravine system and houses that were built near it.
