Sugar Shocker!

Imagine pouring a 5-pound bag of sugar down your child's throat. New data shows that this is the amount kids are getting every month, with most of it coming from the many refined and processed foods and drinks so popular today. Liquid sugar from soda is one of the biggest sources according to Barry M. Popkin, PhD, a professor of nutrition at the University of North Carolina. After studying over 73,000 children and adults, he found that between ages 2 and 18, youngsters drink more calories in sweetened beverages than you probably did as a child.

Too much of any sweetener can raise children's risks of obesity, poor bone density and type 2 diabetes by adding calories and crowding out healthier foods such as fruits, veggies, etc. Sweetener overload, of course, also contributes to tooth decay.

Humans have an innate desire for sweets that is made stronger by a sweets-heavy diet, notes Dr. Popkin. Combine preference for sweet tastes with the many ads that push candy, sugar-filled cereals, cookies, pies, ice cream, fruit drinks and sodas and you have the oldest advertising trick in the book: Get 'em hooked early and they're yours for life.

David Ludwig, MD, PhD, director of the obesity program at Children's Hospital, Boston, warns that "you can't let clever ads determine how your child eats. It's like letting the fox set the rules for the henhouse."

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a daily upper limit for kids of 40 g, or 10 teaspoons, of any type of sugar. The physician authors of Sugar Busters! For Kids set the limit at a more conservative 24 g, or 6 teaspons a day. Other experts suggest that parents aim for somewhere in between these limits.

Tips for Cutting Back on Sweets -

* If your child typically has dessert every day, switch to a dish of fruit 2 or 3 days a week.

* Don't rely on artificially sweetened products. While they indeed have fewer calories, their intense taste reinforces the desire for sweets.

* Soda, sugary cereals, and sweetened fruit drinks and yogurts should be considered as occasional treats.

* Wean your child off sweetened sodas by mixing sparkling water with grape or apple juice.

* Limit TV - Reduce exposure to ads for sweetened foods and drinks by restricting TV to 2 hours a day and sticking to commercial-free stations or by playing videos or DVDs that meet with your approval.

* Chips, fries, white bread and most prepared breakfast cereals are broken down to glucose in the bloodstream almost as quickly as sugar, according to Dr. Ludwig. "The dramatic surge in blood sugar then drops quickly and can cause kids to overeat." --adapted from Prevention, January 2005.

Diet and Diabetes

A 6-year study of more than 65,000 women revealed that those who consumed the most sugar and ate the least fiber had two and one-half times the risk of developing non-insulin-dependent diabetes. Women who consumed a large amount of fiber from cold breakfast cereals saw a 28% decreased risk of diabetes. Foods that caused a significant increased risk: cola beverages, white bread, white rice and French fries. --JAMA.

Sweet Tooth, Big Tippler?

Having a sweet tooth may foretell more than a little extra padding around the middle. An interesting study found that those folk with a paternal history of alcoholism were 2.5 times as likely to enjoy sweets as those with no such history and may be at a high risk for drinking problems down the line. The link may seem odd, but researchers say our reactions to alcohol and sweets are regulated by the same mechanism in the brain. --adapted from Time, Nov. 24, 2003.

More Sugar Shock

Diana Schwarzbein, MD, points out in her book, The Schwarzbein Principle,II, that "it's important to avoid eating sugar, and not just because you may gain weight. Foods rich in sugar and refined carbs are rapidly digested, raising blood sugar and creating insulin spikes, which over time can result in insulin resistance, weight gain and diabetes."

She also points out that the best approach to balancing blood sugar includes regular exercise, taking supplements, and eating a diet of whole (not processed) foods, avoiding sugar and refined carbs, and boosting proteins and good fats. --adapted from Let's Live, April 2004.

Comment: Face it, we all like sweets. Let's try cutting down on the amount we eat. It really can be done and the health rewards are many.

A Plan to Cut Sugar from Diet

"Get the Sugar Out" offers tips on how to replace overly processed mega-calorie sweets with whole healthy foods. This book is not so much about giving up sugar today only to gorge next month as it is about making changes and trade-offs that anyone can live with.

The plan: Start by giving up sugar in postum, cereal and other foods. Then eliminate white bread, rice and other processed carbohydrates that turn into sugar in the body.

The author: Diet expert Ann Louise Gittleman also wrote "The Fat Flush."

The payoff: Besides the satisfaction of gaining control over a sugar addiction, weight loss and improved health are part of the deal. --adapted from the Riverside, Calif. Press-Enterprise, March 25, 2008.

Hold the Sugar

Kenneth A. Bock, MD, co-founder and co-director of the Rhinebeck Health Center in Rhinebeck, NY, and author of The Road to Immunity: How to Survive and Thrive in a Toxic World, has this to say about too much sugar in the diet: "Sugar inhibits phagocytosis--the process by which viruses and bacteria are engulfed and then literally chewed up by white blood cells." --Prevention, November 1999.

Sugar and Mental Health

In a cross-cultural analysis of the relationships between diet and mental disorders, British psychiatric researcher Malcolm Peet found a strong correspondence between high sugar consumption, increased risk of depression and worse outcome of schizophrenia. Two potential mechanisms by which the consumption of refined sugar may affect mental health are suggested by Stephen Llardi, PhD., author of The Depression Cure and associated professor of psychiatry at the University of Kansas.

First, refined sugar suppresses the acivity of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, a growth hormone that promotes neuronal health and plays an important part in the creation of memories by triggering the growth of new connections between neurons. It is known that BDNF levels tend to be extremely low in patients with depression or schizophrenia.

And, consumption of refined sugar promotes a state of chronic inflammation, which is associated with an increased risk of depression and schizophrenia--as well as other conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and some cancers.

Dr. Ilardi advises his depressed patients to try eliminating sugars and simple starches from their diets, and has found they report "remarkable improvements in mood, energy, and mental clarity." --Well Being Journal, March/April 2010.

Saturated fats and refined sugar linked to brain damage, encourage overeating

by Isabelle Z.

(NaturalNews) For some people, losing weight is a no-brainer – eat less and move more, right? If it's so simple, why can't everyone do it? It turns out that if you've been eating a diet full of refined sugar and fat, you could actually be suffering from brain damage that stunts your ability to determine how much you should eat.

When it comes to weight loss, it's important to realize that saturated fats and refined sugar do more than just pack on the pounds. According to researchers, they also change the brain's chemistry, causing people to overeat these foods and triggering a vicious cycle of eating and gaining weight.

In a study that was published in Physiology & Behavior, trained rats were granted limited access to low-fat food and then tested on two types of problems – one that tested their memory abilities and learning dependent on the hippocampus, and one that did not.

After the training, half of the rats were given unlimited access to low-fat food, and the other half was granted unlimited access to food that was high in saturated fat and calories. After being given the same set of problems a second time, the rats that grew obese from the diet high in saturated fat and calories performed much worse than the ones who were not obese on the test of memory and learning dependent on the hippocampus. Both groups performed equally on the other test.

A dye test discovered that the blood-brain barriers in the obese rats were actually weakened, and these rats displayed changes in cognition that indicated damage to the hippocampus.

Brain simply can't turn off impulse to keep eating

Because the hippocampus suppresses memories, it is believed that the hippocampus's ability to suppress a person's undesired thoughts regarding high-calorie foods is actually affected by a diet that is high in sugar and saturated fat. This would explain why obese people are more likely to eat fatty foods and have trouble conjuring up the self-control needed to stop eating.

Researcher Terry Davidson of the American University Center for Behavioral Neuroscience said: "What I think is happening is a vicious cycle of obesity and cognitive decline. The idea is, you eat the high fat/high calorie diet and it causes you to overeat because this inhibitory system is progressively getting fouled up. And unfortunately, this inhibitory system is also for remembering things and suppressing other kinds of thought interference."

Davidson believes that the damage caused by such a diet does become permanent, although he concedes that he can't say precisely when that occurs. He points to other research showing that obese people and those who were obese in the past have weaker activity in their hippocampus when they eat than those who have never been obese. Losing weight, therefore, does not mean that a person will get that lost brain function back, and this could explain why people who have lost weight have so much trouble keeping it off.

Previous studies back up these findings

This ties in with a previous study that showed that obese and overweight kids ate 34 percent more calories from snacks after consuming a meal when compared to their siblings who were of an average weight in a study involving same-sex pairs of siblings. After eating a meal that they enjoyed until they reached the point of feeling full, the children were shown snacks. The overweight and obese children were more likely to actually eat the snacks. In addition, when given a high-calorie appetizer before dinner, the siblings of average weight then ate less dinner than their obese or overweight sibling. This suggests that some children are not as responsive to their body's internal hunger and fullness cues and will keep eating even when they are full.

While you might not be able to entirely undo the brain damage caused by a poor diet, the good news is that many people who can manage to avoid giving into the impulse to eat sugar find that their sugar cravings go away after a while, which makes eating healthier a lot easier. Without sugar's brain-altering effects, many people find that organic fruit and other foods actually taste a lot sweeter and more flavorful. Cutting out refined sugar could go a long way toward curbing the nation's obesity epidemic, and studies like these show tremendous potential for helping set people on the path to better health.

There's nothing wrong with (natural) saturated fats, so the above article gives incorrect and misleading information.

The problem fats are these: rancid (oxidized), trans-fats (overheated), hydrogenated (electrochemically altered), partially hydrogenated (electrochemically altered), etc. The more unsaturated a fat, the greater chance of it being a problem fat due to one of the above. Coconut oil, a natural and healthful fat, is fully saturated. God made it too, and it is not unhealthful, contrary to popular opinion.

Blessings,

Green Cochoa.

We can receive of heaven's light only as we are willing to be emptied of self. We can discern the character of God, and accept Christ by faith, only as we consent to the bringing into captivity of every thought to the obedience of Christ. And to all who do this, the Holy Spirit is given without measure. In Christ "dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in Him." [Colossians 2:9, 10.] {GW 57.1} -- Ellen White.
