A short-term diet of junk food can irreversibly damage memory, study finds

by Michael Ravensthorpe

(NaturalNews) According to a new study by researchers at the University of New South Wales in Australia, eating food that is loaded with sugar and fat for just one week can have a detrimental effect on the brain's cognitive ability. More worrying still, preliminary data suggests that this effect is permanent, indicating that junk food is even more toxic than we can possibly imagine.

'Very concerning'

For the study, the Australian researchers - who were interested in clarifying the relationship between high-energy diets and impaired cognition - fed rats a "cafeteria diet" over a one-month period. This diet was comprised of rat food supplemented with cakes, biscuits, lard and a 10 percent sucrose solution. A control group, subsisting on rat food without supplementation, was also monitored throughout the same period.

The researchers found that the rats on the junk food diet experienced noticeable cognitive impairment within a very short time frame. Much of this impairment related to place recognition, with the animals demonstrating a reduced ability to notice when an object had been moved to a new location. Significantly, the rats also suffered inflammation of the hippocampal region of the brain, which relates to spatial memory.

''We know obesity causes inflammation in the body, but we didn't realize until recently that it causes changes in the brain,'' said Margaret Morris, the head of pharmacology at the university. ''What is so surprising about this research is the speed with which the deterioration of the cognition occurred. [...] Our preliminary data also suggests that the damage is not reversed when the rats are switched back to a healthy diet, which is very concerning.''

The researchers did find that certain aspects of the rats' memories were spared. All of the rats fed a junk food diet, for instance, retained their ability to recognize objects.

Relevance to humans

Rats are favored by scientists because their physiology is similar to ours: similar organs, similar body plans, similar hormones and nervous systems. Consequently, Professor Morris admits that junk food's cognition-impairing abilities might also affect humans:

''We suspect that these findings may be relevant to people,'' she said. ''While nutrition affects the brain at every age, it is critical as we get older and may be important in preventing cognitive decline. An elderly person with poor diet may be more likely to have problems.

''Given that high energy foods can impair the function of the hippocampus, if you eat a lot of them it may contribute to weight gain by interfering with your episodic memory. [...] People might be less aware of their internal cues like hunger pangs and knowing when they have had enough.''

The study was funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia and published in the Brain, Behavior, and Immunity journal in December 2013.

Junk food Can Be As Addictive As Heroin

by David Gutierrez, staff writer

(NaturalNews) It should be no surprise that people have so much trouble staying on diets, or that obesity in the Western world continues soaring beyond all prior records.

New research into the neurological effects of junk food consumption is increasingly confirming that eating sugary, high-fat foods produces exactly the same effects as taking street drugs like heroin, with predictably similar results.

Animal studies have confirmed that eating junk food causes the release of pleasure chemicals in the brain, and that regular consumption actually causes these pleasure centers to become desensitized. This drives people to eat greater and greater quantities of junk food to get the same rush, in an identical procedure to that characteristic of substance abuse.

Researchers have even observed junk-food-addicted animals starving themselves for weeks rather than eating healthy food.

The findings suggest that people shifting away from unhealthy diets should approach the effort as one of breaking addiction, not just a matter of willpower. Taking the addictive power of junk food seriously might, in the long run, make it easier to cook the habit.

Beware the dangerous ingredients in pickles and pickle juice

by Tony Isaacs

(NaturalNews) Millions of people love pickles and their juice has been widely touted for many uses health benefits and remedies, including use as a post-workout drink and athletic performance enhancer, flavoring for foods, flavor enhancer in recipes and drinks, vinegar replacement, meat-tenderizer, hiccup stopper, PMS reliever, heartburn reliever and hangover remedy. If you are one of the many people who like pickles and/or pickle juice, you may want to think again after a look at the ingredients commonly found in commercial pickles and their juice.

In addition to water, cucumbers and distilled cucumbers, pickle juice typically contains:

Refined table salt: Table salt is used as a preservative. Unlike Himalayan or sea salt, which has natural salt and numerous beneficial minerals, refined salt has been chemically stripped of minerals and dried above 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit (which alters the natural chemical structure of the salt). The processed salt is not pure sodium chloride but is actually only 97.5 percent sodium chloride. The remaining 2.5 percent of refined salt is made up of anti-caking and flow agents. Often, such agents include dangerous chemicals like ferrocyanide and aluminosilicate.

Calcium chloride: : Though the FDA deems calcium chloride (CaCl2) to be "generally recognized as safe", in the UK it is listed as a hazardous irritant which "causes irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory organs" and it carries the warning "Harmful if inhaled or swallowed."

Sodium Benzoate: : Is a preservative which has been linked to cancer. See the first link below.

Polysorbate 80: Polysorbate 80 is used as an emulsifier in food items and is also a common ingredient in vaccines. According to the Polysorbate 80 Material Safety Data Sheet, it may be carcinogenic as well as mutagenic. When injected into prepubescent rats, polysorbate 80 caused abnormal growth of reproductive organs and made the rats sterile. Polysorbate 80 could also be harmful to people with Crohn's disease.

Natural Flavor: The term "natural flavoring" has been used to mask a number of unhealthy ingredients and there are over 1000 ingredients that fall under the U.S. FDA guidelines as "Natural Flavors".

Yellow #5: Yellow #5 is a food coloring agent which is also known as "Tartrazine" which belongs to the large class of food dyes known as "azo" dyes. Yellow 5 causes the most allergic reactions of all of the azo dyes on the market. It has been known to cause headaches, overheating, itching, blurred vision, and many other side-effects in people who are sensitive to the dye. In addition, the combination of Yellow #5 and sodium benzoate has been linked to hyperactivity. Due to its adverse effects in those who are sensitive to Yellow #5, the Center for Science in the Public Interest has called for a ban of the dye in the United States.

Safe pickles and safe uses for pickle juice

The good news is that when you can your own pickles at home and avoid using ingredients like the ones above you can enjoy the pickles and use the juice for the many benefits touted for pickle juice. And, homemade or not, you can also use pickle juice for non-edible uses such as using it as a cleaning agent and as a weed killer - just be sure to wear gloves if you use commercial pickle juice.

Frito-Lay chips are filled with poison-producing GMO corn and deadly glyphosate herbicide

by Jonathan Benson, staff writer

(NaturalNews) The Texas-based Frito-Lay corporation, whose parent company is PepsiCo, has been caught selling deadly processed food products that contain both genetically modified (GM), pesticide-producing "corn" and Monsanto's Roundup herbicide (glyphosate), which is scientifically linked to causing hormone disruption, reproductive damage, digestive disorders and much more.

Recent tests conducted on Frito-Lay's SunChips product revealed the presence of GM Bt corn, which comprised 100% of the corn used in the product. Bt corn, as you'll probably recall, creates its own insecticide inside every cell of the plant, which can't be washed off and is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency -- Bt corn isn't food, in other words.

Feeding studies on mammals have found that Bt corn causes immune system disturbances, blood biochemistry disturbances, male reproductive organ damage, disturbances in the functioning of the digestive system and signs of organ toxicity. Proteins from Bt corn, which supposedly break down in the digestive tract, have also been found circulating in the blood of both pregnant and non-pregnant women.

Also found in SunChips were dangerously high levels of glyphosate, the primary active ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup weedkiller. Using Specific LC/MS/MS testing methods, the consumer advocacy group GMO Free USA observed levels of glyphosate in SunChips averaging 0.14 parts per million (ppm), or 0.14 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg).

Glyphosate, as we've continually reported, has been prolifically linked to damaging the endocrine (hormone) system, and triggering birth defects, infertility and major damage to the kidneys and other vital organs. Glyphosate also destroys gut microbiota, which the body needs to process and assimilate nutrients, as well as fight off harmful pathogens and maintain strong immunity.

"The quantitative PCR test verified, by DNA analysis, that 100% of the corn in the SunChips was GMO, containing DNA sequences known to be present in insecticide-producing Bt and Roundup Ready corn," reports GMO Free USA. "The test [also] documented the presence of glyphosate in SunChips at a level of 0.14 ppm, or 0.14 mg/kg."

Test results expose SunChips as poisonous to humans

The really insidious part about all this is that SunChips are marketed as a healthy, whole grain snack food "low in saturated fat and cholesterol." Aside from the fact that both saturated fat and cholesterol are important nutrients required for health -- the insinuation that they aren't is a deception based on pseudoscientific prejudice and ignorance -- the presentation of SunChips as some kind of Earth-based food is nothing short of criminal false advertising.

And this is hardly a shock, considering Frito-Lay's parent company, PepsiCo, spent more than $13 million fighting against mandatory GMO labeling. Both PepsiCo and Frito-Lay are major purveyors of GMO junk foods, many of which are marketed directly to children, and which we now know are loaded with chemical poisons in the form of pesticide and herbicide residues.

You can view the duly shocking test results of Kellogg's Froot Loops breakfast cereal, which also contains unbelievably high levels of both GMOs and glyphosate herbicide, here:
GMOFreeUSA.org.

"PEPSICO, the owner of Frito-Lay, has been one of the biggest financial contributors to the fight against consumers' need to know if they're eating GMOs," reports GMO Free USA.

"Pepsi contributed over $8.1 million to defeat citizens' ballot initiatives in California ($2,485,400), Washington ($1,620,899), Colorado ($1,650,000) and Oregon ($2,350,000), and spent an additional $5.06 million on lobbying in 2013 ($2,720,000) and 2014 (first 2 quarters of 2014: $2,340,000)."

Readers are urged to contact Frito-Lay directly and share their thoughts:

Cancer-stuffed Pizza? Pizza Hut Introducing Hotdog-stuffed Pizzas To US Market

by Daniel Barker

(NaturalNews) Are you ready, America? Because this is really big news...

By the time you read this article, it may already be happening -- because on June 18, Pizza Hut announced that Americans will finally have the privilege to order what morbidly obese junk food junkies in various parts of the world have already been lucky enough to have access to:

That's right, I'm talking about Hot Dog Stuffed Crust Pizza!!

Apparently, those magnanimous and health-conscious Pizza Hut executives have decided that it would be cruel and unfair to withhold this culinary abomination from a hot dog- and pizza-loving American public.

If the news turns out to be true, you'll soon be able to not only gorge on a pizza loaded with trans fats, processed cheese, refined white flour, enough sodium to send your blood pressure through the roof and toppings of indefinite origin, but also one that features a crust stuffed with yummy nitrate-loaded, every-part-of-the-pig (and more), artificially colored, preservative-containing hot dog wieners.

Who could ask for more?

The freedom to order one (or more) of these and have it delivered to your home so that you only have to waddle from your recliner facing the TV to the front door and back makes it even better.

Isn't life in America great?

We love everything bigger, don't we? (including our waistlines, hearts and livers) And why not combine two artery-clogging favorites into one? It's the American way!

Who knows, maybe they'll offer it with the option of adding another American favorite -- apple pie -- as a topping. How patriotic that would be!

If you seem to be detecting a note of sarcasm here, you would be correct.

And honestly, I should not be the first to cast any stones. I too have been brainwashed into craving the type of foods that Pizza Hut and all the other fast food chains tempt us with on a daily, if not hourly, basis.

I, like so many of my fellow Americans, grew up on McDonald's, white bread, sugary sodas, salty processed snacks, etc.

Those who sell this stuff to us figured out a long time ago how to make it addictive (not to mention tasty), and they go to great lengths to cleverly market it, so we are not really to be blamed for falling for it -- especially when the addiction is instilled in us at a very early age.

However, we do have a choice. And now, it's harder to excuse the continued indulgence in this type of wanton consumption because we know better.

We now know that the nitrates contained in hot dog wieners cause colorectal cancer, for instance. We know that processed foods are generally unhealthy, but the temptation is strong, I know.

But I am living proof that one can change unhealthy habits and break (or at least manage) the addictions. I finally grew tired of seeing a fat stranger in the mirror and began the not-so-impossible process of weaning myself from fast foods.

One big step for myself was to invest in a juicer and to begin retraining my taste buds. I found that it's possible to replace the unhealthy cravings with healthy ones.

And if I crave a pizza, I make one from scratch at home using fresh, unprocessed ingredients.

Once you learn how to eat well, the hypnosis begins to wear off, and monstrosities such as hot dog stuffed crust pizza will no longer turn you into a drooling Homer Simpson replica.

End of rant.

Thank you again for this reminder. Let's be more careful what we put into our stomachs. The temptation could become stronger as we grow older and have less strength to make our own. Then it is just so good to get that extra Tuesday deal in a delicious pizza.

"Here is a last piece of advice. If you believe in goodness and if you value the approval of God, fix your minds on the things which are holy and right and pure and beautiful and good. Model your conduct on what you have learned from me, on what I have told you and shown you, and you will find the God of peace will be with you."

Trans Fats In Junk Food Impair Brain Function, Cause Memory Loss

by Jennifer Lilley

(NaturalNews) It's no secret that eating junk foods contributes to weight gain and can lead to health complications, but new information about dietary trans fats (dTFA) -- which exist in most junk foods -- shows that consumption of such items is also destroying people's minds. Specifically, memory function among men aged younger than 45 years has been shown to worsen with consumption of foods loaded with dietary trans fats.(1)

The study, conducted by researchers from the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine, discovered that men falling within the aforementioned age bracket were able to recall 86 words during a word recall test. However, for every additional gram of trans fats eaten every day, their recall fell by 0.76 words compared to men who did not consume trans fats. In simpler terms, what this boils down to is that men who had the highest levels of dTFA remembered 12 fewer words than those who did not eat trans fats.(1)

Problematic for people who need to focus on productivity, workplace performance

Experts note that the age impacted unfortunately involves men who are typically in the midst of their career, where focus and effectiveness in the workplace is of utmost importance. "Trans fats were most strongly linked to worse memory in men during their high productivity years," said Beatrice A. Golomb, MD, PhD, and lead author of the study.(1)

While women were involved in the study, and analyses involving them were similar to those of the men, "women were too few in number to draw separate conclusions." Therefore, the findings home in on men, who make up half of the population.(1,2)

The researchers also noted that this study, which was published in PLOS ONE, was among the first of its kind. "Trans fat consumption has previously shown adverse associations to behavior and mood—other pillars of brain function," Golomb said. "However, to our knowledge a relation to memory or cognition had not been shown."(1)

Physical, mental benefits of eliminating trans fats from diet

As stated in PLOS ONE, the benefits of removing trans fats from diets are plenty:

These findings, in which greater dTFA consumption is linked to worse word memory in adults during years of high productivity, adults [younger than 45], add to evidence for unfavorable health correlates of trans fat consumption. They extend findings to a third pillar of central nervous system function, cognition—complementing evidence for adverse dTFA relations to behavior (aggression/irritability) and mood.

Through the years, there's been a rise in awareness regarding the detrimental health aspects of junk food consumption. Everything from obesity and inflammation to insulin resistance and an increased risk for cardiac problems is linked to eating the likes of potato chips, donuts and vending machine snacks. While lack of exercise and stress are also factors that lead to the onset or worsening of such health problems, it's clear that the excessive amounts of sugary foods laden with unpronounceable additives and loads of trans fats have fallen under the watchful eye of health-minded people.

Today, it's not uncommon for restaurant chains and food corporations to voluntarily announce plans to create healthier menus and eliminate harmful ingredients.

Thankfully, a large-scale effort to get trans fats out of processed foods is in place

In 2013, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made a preliminary announcement about trans fats, saying they're not generally recognized as safe anymore. Flash forward to recent news this year in which the FDA came down even harder on such fats, saying that food makers have three years to stop using trans fats. Microwave popcorn, pie crusts and frostings are just a few examples of foods that would need to eliminate them.(1,3)

These fats are used to enhance flavoring, prolong shelf life and maintain a product's appearance. However, the eye and taste appeal simply isn't worth the possible health consequences. "As I tell patients," said Golomb, "while trans fats increase the shelf life of foods, they reduce the shelf life of people."(1)

Junk Food and Sodas To Bankrupt National Health Care Systems

by Jennifer Lea Reynolds

(NaturalNews) Diabetes has always been a concerning health issue, with the unfortunate possibility that life-threatening complications could arise in certain individuals with the disease. In many instances, blindness, stroke and amputation are par for the course for those afflicted. While diabetes is certainly not a new illness, there are growing warnings about the epidemic's severity.

In the UK, for example, experts from the charity Diabetes UK are practically pleading with the government to take more action to fight diabetes; they say that not doing so will bankrupt their National Health Service (NHS). As it stands already, NHS data has revealed that general practitioners are spending approximately one tenth of their budget on diabetes medication prescriptions. Between that and concerns over people receiving inadequate care due to the speed in which new cases are developing, Diabetes UK stresses the urgency of this matter.

Expert: it's necessary to "act now" to save healthcare system and help diabetics

Barbara Young, the Diabetes UK chief executive, says, "With a record number of people now living with diabetes in the UK, there is no time to waste – the Government must act now."

She explains that diabetes currently costs the NHS about £10 billion annually (the equivalent of approximately $15 billion US dollars), 80 percent of which goes towards efforts to keep complications at bay. Young says the potential to save money and provide better care is essential and possible, but the time to act is now.

"Until then," she says, "avoidable human suffering will continue and the costs of treating diabetes will continue to spiral out of control and threaten to bankrupt the NHS."

Interestingly, the most common type of diabetes afflicting more than nine out of ten people - type 2 - can be reversed or at least better controlled without as much reliance on medical professionals. A reduction in new cases and an improvement in existing ones means (drum roll please) greatly reducing the chances that the healthcare system will go bankrupt.

How?

A junk food diet is a key contributor to the diabetes epidemic

It mostly boils down to weight management; an unhealthy dietary lifestyle often leads to obesity, which is linked to type 2 diabetes.

According to a Daily Mail video, Diabetes UK expert Robin Hewings explains that 750 people are being diagnosed with diabetes daily. He refers to the epidemic as a "national health emergency." He's sure that reducing weight and obesity issues will help keep the problem under control.

If you visit just about any supermarket or restaurant or take a look at most television commercials, you'll see that junk food and sodas lurk in almost every aisle, restaurant and advertisement.

Sure, we have the ability to shun these so-called desirable foods, so the blame can't be placed entirely on the marketers who put them there. However, the growing production of sugary sodas and the tempting placement of junk foods by these people shows no effort on their part to contribute to a healthier society. As long as their pockets are filled, they don't seem to care if people are developing diabetes in droves or that the entire healthcare system could go belly up.

Healthy efforts exist, but they need to become more commonplace

On the plus side, there are efforts to help focus on better health that could help manage weight and keep diabetes at bay.

For example, some fast food chains no longer automatically give children a soda as the only option to go along with their meal; instead, they're given the choice of milk, fruit juice or water. If they want soda, they must ask. Several schools are engaging in efforts to teach children about fruits and vegetables or have moved away from the likes of a typical French fry and pizza lunch menu. There's even one school in North Carolina that started a "Read and Ride" program in which children pedal on stationary bikes while enjoying a book.

Even at some state fairs, the effort to go healthy is entering the picture. At Iowa's state fair, dietitian Nikki Stahr said she enjoys running a booth that teaches portion control and provides people with healthier options. Fresh fruit and salad-on-a-stick are some choices that are offered, which are certainly better on the waistline than fried cookies and funnel cakes.

Baby steps.

There's a long way to go. Collectively, everyone - the government, food corporations, fast food chains, marketers and consumers - must engage in wiser choices that exclude junk food and soda and turn to healthier options that will control weight gain and ultimately lead to fewer diabetes cases and a stronger healthcare system.

Excellent post Suzanne,

It is terrible to see just how bad things are today and yet so few people seem to care! At least in the USA anyway. There is more than enough information available today and even though it seems more and more people are making better health choices, the effects of toxins and vaccines and even the health care system are rapidly degrading the health of our society.

What answer can we offer to our society and people for turning away from the health care system we have in place now? What would such a change look like and how could we make this change as smooth as possible? Many very sick people have put their children through the medical system for the job and money opportunities. How can we seemingly undermine that same medical system they trust so much without causing great fear among the people?
