Mercury in Tuna

More than half of the 302 cans of tuna sampled by researchers at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas had mercury levels that might be harmful to women and children if consumed regularly, according to a February 2010 study. --Consumer Reports on Heallth, May 2010.

Sushi Tuna May be Super High in Mercury

Much of the tuna offered at the nation's sushi bars could well contain dangerously high mercury levels. GotMercury.org, a California-based public health advocacy group purchased sushi from 5 top restaurants and had 12 samples tested for mercury. What they found was quite disturbing.

The mercury levels in the tuna averaged double the FDA standard. "Eating sushi has become the new Russian roulette," warned health analyst Eli Saddler.

* Prevention, magazine notes that there is no way to prepare mercury tainted fish that reduces the content of this pollutant, for it binds tightly to protein. --Prevention, Jan. 2002.

Another Prevention article advises us not to feed our dogs, cats, raw fish for it may harbor parasites and bacteria that can cause gastric problems --July 2002.

Indeed, any fish eaten by pregnant or nursing mother may threaten her baby's developing brain and nervous system. Nearly all seafood carries traces of mercury known to stunt nervous tissue development in babies and children. Pregnant women should avoid all raw fish because of parasites and germs. --Prevention, July 2004.

The farmed seafood you're eating may have been raised on animal feces

by Ethan A. Huff, staff writer

(NaturalNews) More than 85 percent of the seafood consumed by Americans is imported, with much of it coming from China, Vietnam, and various other Asian countries that have a not-so-consistent track record of food safety. And as it turns out, conditions at many of the foreign facilities where imported seafood is processed before getting shipped to the states are so filthy and contaminated that if consumers knew just how bad things really were, they would likely think twice before buying that pack of scallops or shrimp from the grocery store.

As reported by Bloomberg, workers at Ngoc Sinh Seafoods Trading & Processing Export Enterprise in Vietnam were recently seen hauling plastic baskets of shrimp through the company's filthy, trash-ridden, and bug-infested facility. Containers full of the shrimp were loaded up with ice made from questionable, and often contaminated, tap water that the government recommends boiling before use, which has become the norm rather than the exception when it comes to seafood processing.

Many Chinese seafood farmers feed their fish animal waste

Similar unsanitary conditions are common throughout China as well, which is a major exporter of tilapia and scallops. According to Bloomberg, many seafood farmers in China actually feed their fish feces from pigs, geese, and other cattle, even though the practice is extremely unsafe. Not only does this exposure to animal waste tend to make the fish sick, but it also contaminates their water environments with excrement, which is often polluted with harmful bacteria like salmonella.

"Those conditions -- ice made from dirty water, animals near the farms, pigs -- are unacceptable," said Mansour Samadpour, a microbiologist, to Bloomberg Markets magazine about the dirty secrets of the seafood trade. Samadpour's company, IEH Laboratories & Consulting Group, specializes in testing the cleanliness of water for the shellfish farming industry.

Since the seafood industry is relatively cutthroat these days, certain unscrupulous seafood farmers, particularly in Asian countries, are cutting corners to boost profits, which puts consumers at high risk. In the case of Chinese fish farming, many operators have altogether stopped purchasing safer commercial feed, and have instead turned to exclusively feeding their fish potentially deadly animal waste.

"The manure the Chinese use to feed fish is frequently contaminated with microbes and salmonella," says Michael Doyle, Director of the University of Georgia's Center for Food Safety, about the larger problem of China's seafood farming industry.

FDA dropping the ball in protecting Americans against contaminated seafood

And while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is supposed to be in charge of regulating the safety of imported seafood, the agency only inspects about 2.7 percent of all imported food, according to available data. The FDA is apparently too busy raiding raw milk dairy farms and imprisoning innocent farmers to bother with protecting the American public against potentially contaminated seafood.

The Dangers of Eating Sushi

by Alex Malinsky aka RawGuru

(NaturalNews) Sushi is a favorite among people of diverse ages and backgrounds. With a long history in Asian culinary tradition, sushi appeals to individuals all around the world. Typically, this type of food is perceived as healthy and safe. In fact, many individuals opt for sushi at lunch or dinner, because they believe that it's the healthier option. But before you head down to buy your favorite roll, take into consideration the following risks that are associated with this particular type of cuisine.

High Caloric Intake

Sushi does offer many health benefits, but the idea that it is a low-calorie alternative to other types of food is misinformed. The fish itself is quite low in calories, but after adding sauces, fried tempura pieces, cream cheese and other extras, these rolls can pack quite the caloric punch. A healthy diet relies upon the right consumption of calories, so it is important that you understand exactly what you're eating to ensure that you are keeping your meals in line with your dietary needs.

Mercury Poisoning

Tuna is notorious for high mercury content, and this is the type of fish that is used most frequently to make sushi. A neurotoxin, mercury can wreak havoc on the body and is particularly found in tuna, swordfish, marlin and shark. Some of the symptoms of mercury poisoning include vision impairment; tingling throughout the body; inability to coordinate movement; speech, hearing and walking difficulties; and muscle weakness.

Parasites

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends cooking seafood to keep foodborne illness at bay. When eating sushi, you opt not to have your fish cooked and can expose yourself to a wide range of viruses, bacteria and parasites. Parasites, in particular, are common in sushi that has not been prepared according to industry standards. These parasites can cause a wide range of health concerns, making those affected quite miserable for several days. Some of the symptoms of a parasite include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and the expulsion of a tapeworm. Furthermore, parasites can create a great deal of pain in the abdomen, as they can damage the lining of the stomach, intestines and other elements of the digestive tract.

Pickled Ginger and Wasabi

Pickled ginger is a condiment that is almost always served with sushi. This is, oftentimes, an acquired taste that some people simply don't like, and overeating this particular substance can lead to upset stomach, irritation and heartburn. But there are more serious dangers lurking within pickled ginger servings. Oftentimes, this sushi ingredient contains food coloring, such as Red #40, that can cause allergies, hyperactivity and congestion. Additionally, depending upon the manufacturer's recipe, pickled ginger frequently contains preservatives and other chemical substances that can cause vast health problems, such as potassium sorbate, MSG, aspartame and sodium benzoate.

Wasabi, too, may contain highly dangerous chemical additives. Some of these may include artificial flavors and colors, rapeseed oil, citric acid, corn flour, soy and cornstarch.

Is Eating Sushi Worth the Risk?

As mentioned previously, there are numerous health benefits that sushi has to offer. This article goes over just a few of the ingredients that are typically found in favorite sushi rolls that can cause health concerns. The trick is in ensuring that the sushi you eat is prepared properly and with clean ingredients so that you don't have to suffer through mercury poisoning, having a parasitic worm and other highly painful experiences.

Check Your Mercury Intake From Fish With This Handy Online Calculator

by L.J. Devon, Staff Writer

(NaturalNews) Mercury is a naturally occurring element, but it is also a danger to human anatomy -- a neurotoxin to the brain. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, overexposure to mercury can spur irritability, social anxiety, shyness and even eating disorders like anorexia.

Today's precarious human activities facilitate mercury further into the air, soil and water. The burning of fossil fuels lets off elemental mercury that can take on many forms in the environment.

Fish readily take up these forms of mercury and pass it into humans. Today, the average mercury level in tuna measures 250 ppb, as documented by the Natural News Forensic Food Lab.

A handy online calculator created by the National Resources Defense Council can help you monitor your mercury intake from a variety of seafood sources. The results warn if you have exceeded EPA safety limits.

For example, a 160-pound female who eats three cans of chunk light tuna per week exceeds the chart's safety zone. This is equivalent to consuming about 0.12 micrograms of mercury per kilogram of body weight per day, an amount exceeding EPA safety standards.

To better understand this element, here are the three classes of mercury including the top ways people are being poisoned by it.

Metallic mercury and fossil fuel combustion

At room temperature, metallic mercury is shiny and in liquid form. It's also called elemental mercury, because this is its purest form and is not combined with any other elements. This form is used in thermometers. Metallic mercury lets off vapors, especially as the temperature rises. If breathed in, these vapors can go unfiltered by the gastrointestinal tract and can damage the nervous system.

Humans are responsible for the release of elemental mercury into the atmosphere (80 percent) primarily through fossil fuel combustion, mining and smelting, and from solid waste incineration. Once it's released into the air, it can change into other forms and get into the soil and waterways. Additionally, metallic mercury is in dental amalgams -- a bizarre practice that the dental industry has yet to address.

Inorganic mercury and vaccine preservatives

Mercury becomes inorganic mercury when it combines with other elements. It commonly combines with oxygen, sulfur and chlorine to form mercury salts. Most of these mercury salts look like white powders or crystals. Inorganic forms of mercury, like ammoniated mercuric chloride and mercuric iodide, are used in skin-lightening creams, which is a crude and questionable method of skin care.

Other forms, such as thimerosal and phenylmercuric nitrate, are used as preservatives in some vaccines and medicines, raising serious questions of medical ethics. (Flu shots like this one contain 51,000 ppb of mercury!) Additionally, mercury injections of this form are sent straight into the blood, bypassing the gastrointestinal filters of the body.

Organic mercury and fish consumption

When mercury combines with carbon specifically, it is classified as organic mercury. Organic mercury can also combine with other elements to form organic mercury salts. The most common form found in the environment is methylmercury. This is the form of mercury passed into fish and marine mammals. Methylmercury is changed by bacteria and fungi in the environment and is multiplied and made more pervasive in this way. Through these natural changes, the level of mercury is expounded upon and passed into marine mammals and, ultimately, humans who consume the fish.

The mercury levels in the fish ultimately measure higher than concentrations in the surrounding water! Sharks and swordfish live a long time and can bioaccumulate tremendous amounts of mercury in their tissues.

To learn more about your mercury intake from seafood, do a personal checkup using the handy online calculator provided by the National Resources Defense Council.

Cancer Growth Confirmed In Fish In Pennsylvania; Lesion-covered Fish Becoming More Common In Toxic Environment

by Jennifer Lilley

(NaturalNews) The first-ever documented case of a cancerous tumor found on a smallmouth bass in Pennsylvania has recently been confirmed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory at Michigan State University.

The discovery was made by an angler in November 2014 when he caught the fish in the Susquehanna River in Dauphin County, PA. It was subsequently taken to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC); the large, visible growth protruding near its mouth was ultimately deemed a malignant tumor, based on two independent laboratory tests.(1)

It's said that, while such findings have occurred in the United States, it's been rare in Pennsylvania. Rare or not, this first-documented case in the state is disturbing and represents concerns over the health of fish, as PFBC Executive Director John Arway expresses.

"As we continue to study the river, we find young-of-year and now adult bass with sores, lesions and more recently a cancerous tumor," he said, "all of which continue to negatively impact population levels and recreational fishing. The weight-of-evidence continues to build a case that we need to take some action on behalf of the fish."(1)

River at risk of losing "world-class smallmouth bass fishery" if DEP doesn't act soon

In 2005, a young-of-year smallmouth bass found in the Susquehanna River was documented with a disease-related mortality. Deaths of these fish have led to their decline in the river, leading PFBC to continually reach out the the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). However, requests for the DEP to look into this matter have been met with resistance; since 2012, the PFBC has not been successful in petitioning the DEP to add the river to Pennsylvania's bi-annual list of impaired waterways.(1)

"If we do not act to address the water quality issues in the Susquehanna River, Pennsylvania risks losing what is left of what was once considered a world-class smallmouth bass fishery," said Arway. "DEP is expected to release its 2016 list of impaired waters in late fall. We are urging them once again to follow the science and add the Susquehanna River to the list."(1)

In addition to smallmouth bass with lesions and this recent discovery of a cancerous tumor, the Susquehanna River has been home to another impaired river red flag: intersex fish. Studies in 2010 conducted by U.S. Geological Survey biologists found that over 90 percent of adult male smallmouth bass collected on the Susquehanna River contained immature egg cells, thought to be the result of chemicals in the water that act like hormones. Agricultural pesticides, poultry waste and human personal care products are just some of the factors behind this problem.(2)

More problems persist in waterways, destroying aquatic life

Elsewhere, the issue of microbeads -- small beads commonly found in personal care products like exfoliating face and body washes -- have presented an issue for those concerned about waterways and fish. The beads make their way into the water, jeopardizing the health of fish and the people who eat them.

In Illinois, for instance, a bill was signed to ban the sale and manufacture of products containing such beads because they were continuously being ingested by fish that mistakenly took the round plastic pieces as fish eggs. Then humans eat the fish, possibly harming themselves by ingesting the tiny bits of plastic.(3)

To get an idea of how much of a problem this has become, consider Lake Michigan. The lake, which is right near Chicago, IL, was found to have about 17,000 bits of microbeads per square kilometer. Other states too, have followed in Illinois' footsteps, urging a ban on the sale and manufacture of products containing these synthetic beads.(3)

Arizona Couple Disgusted After Almost Eating Worm-ridden Fish - Do You Know Where Your Meat Comes From?

by J. D. Heyes

(NaturalNews) A couple from Arizona was shocked recently when they found that fresh salmon they had just purchased from a local grocery store was infested with slimy worms - a preview what will likely become more common in the years ahead as Congress votes to remove country-of-origin labeling on meat, poultry and fish.

Jen Chafitz, of Peoria, Ariz., had made her usual shopping trip to a local Fry's supermarket recently and picked out some supposedly fresh salmon filet to fix for dinner that night.

At home about six hours later, however, she made the startling discovery. As she was preparing dinner, she removed the fish from the refrigerator and noticed two worms slithering underneath the packaging.

"Its head was sticking out of the fish," Chafitz said told the local ABC affiliate. "Standing there I felt like something was crawling on me, it was really gross."

Immediately she hollered into the next room for her husband, who ran into the kitchen and was just as stunned by what his wife had found, as the worms continued to slither across the fish.

Before Jen took the fish back to Fry's in a bid to alert managers the couple made a video of what they had found.

ABC 15 reported that a representative from the supermarket said the store offered a full refund of the couple's money and that managers would be contacting the distributor to check on quality control and make sure they are up to standards.

Contamination could have been widespread

The local station further reported:

Dustin decided to share the video on a neighborhood Facebook page in hopes of making people more aware of a potential problem. Never seeing anything like this he was concerned the worms could've contaminated other filets in the batch.

"We're a close community and it felt like I needed to" let others know what the couple had found, Dustin said.

Meanwhile, Jen said she has switched to a more vegetarian-based diet, adding that it might be quite some time before she'll be able to eat fish or even chicken again.

While the Arizona Department of Environmental Health said that parasites can occasionally show up in fish and that the food would be safe to eat if cooked to 140-degrees Fahrenheit, it's a safe bet that few Americans would either want to take that risk or have the stomach to eat worm-infested fish no matter how high the cooking temperature.

What's more, the department added that if you are not able to identify the parasite the health risk isn't worth it anyway and that such contaminated foods ought to be thrown out and the store where it was purchased notified immediately.

Are such incidents guaranteed to increase? Yes, say opponents of a recent congressional vote to eliminate country-of-origin labeling on meats and poultry imported into the U.S.

Voting to provide consumers with less, not more, information about their food

As NaturalNews has reported, in late May the House Agriculture Committee voted overwhelmingly (38-6) in recent days to repeal a "country of origin" law for beef, pork and poultry, just two days after the globalist World Trade Organization ruled against portions of the U.S. requirement.

The labels were required to inform customers where their meat came from, e.g. "born in Canada, raised and slaughtered in the United States," or "born, raised and slaughtered in the United States."

The WTO ruled that the U.S. labeling requirement put Canadian and Mexican livestock at a disadvantage. The global trade panel rejected a U.S. appeal following a similar WTO ruling last year.

Meat producers and too many in Congress had sought repeal of U.S. laws requiring the labeling, citing mostly higher costs of compliance.

But when it comes to public health, most Americans would probably agree that, if given the choice, they'd rather know more about imported products than less. While meat standards in Canada are generally comparable to U.S. standards, Mexican government standards are not - and what's more, they are not as uniformly enforced.

No matter. As usual, the consumer loses and the powerful global interests win.

Birds, swine, fish, worms, why not?

But seriously, no one should be eating anything which spends any time in the ocean today. The radiation is a bigger issue than any worms.

Approved Seafood Imported Into The U.S. Is Often Raised On a Diet Of Pig Feces

by Jennifer Lea Reynolds

(NaturalNews) Another reason to beware of the toxic ingredients in your food supply is upon us, this time involving the seafood that's imported into the United States. Seafood has long been the subject of concern, from the radiation that's lurking in fish affected by the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, to the child slave labor that's a part of the multi-billion dollar shrimp export industry.

However, the latest news concerns the fact that much of the seafood eaten in the U.S. contains pig feces.

That's right, you just may be ingesting pig excrement with every forkful of tilapia. Lose your appetite yet?

Specifically, the fish coming from tilapia farms in China are fed pig and goose feces. Michael Doyle, the director of the University of Georgia's Center for Food Safety, confirms this, explaining that the manure that Chinese tilapia farmers use to feed the fish is contaminated with microbes such as salmonella.

Why some don't blink an eye about pig feces in your tilapia

Sadly, the disgusting feeding process goes on for a reason that's all too common in society today: profit.

Although feeding fish in this manner contaminates water, and in turn, can wreak havoc on human health, it's desirable because it helps boost business where competition can be fierce. In a nutshell, feeding fish the likes of pig and goose feces is cheap, which allows the farmers to sell the fish at a lower cost, and in turn, increase sales due to the more attractive pricing.

As if it isn't disturbing enough that 27 percent of seafood in the U.S. comes from China, the fact remains that nothing is being done about these horrific processes! According to Bloomberg Markets magazine, the Food and Drug Administration only inspects a measly 2.7 percent of imported food. This means that a significant amount of contaminated food is coming into the country, making its way into stores you likely frequent.

Tilapia, shrimp, crab ... The bottom line? Stay away from imported seafood!
Think the problem is only limited to tilapia?

Not at all.

In Vietnam, there are stories of dirty warehouses filled with trash and insects. That's all fine and dandy until you learn that the warehouse is a place where people, who work in these areas (which aren't air-conditioned, by the way) are processing shrimp ... shrimp that rests in dirty plastic tubs that contain ice which was made from unhealthy tap water. The Health Ministry in that country even says that people should boil the water prior to consumption to avoid contamination.

Yikes.

This isn't the first time other countries have been eyed for their unhealthy handling and unethical efforts involving seafood.

As previously mentioned, slave labor is a terrible problem that's par for the course in many countries. In Southeast Asia, for example, children as young as 13 are trafficked and shipped into Thailand from places such as Cambodia and Myanmar. They're forced to work upwards of 16-hour days in grueling, crowded conditions, where they're told to devein shrimp as fast as possible.

Over in California, there's a ban on commercial crab fishing, but officials maintain that it's due to the fact that high levels of dangerous algal toxins exist in the bodies of crabs. Despite claims that the Fukushima disaster poses zero threat to the food supply on the U.S. West coast, people know better.

According the radio station 95.1 FM (SuperStation 95), insiders from the California Fish and Game Commission have said that the crab fishing ban was not about toxins in crabs, but rather due to the high levels of radioactivity in them stemming from the Fukushima nuclear disaster. These insiders, as reported by Superstation 95, said that state officials wanted to protect the public from eating the radioactive crabs, yet still remain determined to refrain from publicly admitting that the problem is directly linked to the disaster.

From shrimp and tilapia to crabs and all kinds of seafood in general, the truth is that the fish coming into the United States is toxic. It sits in dirty tubs where young slave workers work long hours in horrible conditions. It's radioactive. It's fed pig and goose feces.

It's disgusting.

Simply don't eat imported seafood. Doing so will not only protect your health, but will convey your opposition to slave labor and unfair working conditions.
