More Doctors Choosing Natural Treatments Over Pharmaceuticals

by J. D. Heyes

(NaturalNews) As Natural News readers are aware, in the past, alternative medicine and natural cures received precious little attention and respect in the traditional medical community. But times are a-changing; more and more physicians are choosing to treat their patients nutritionally, sometimes in conjunction with, but increasingly in replacement of, pharmaceuticals.

As reported by the Daily Record, Dr. Ronald Weiss recently moved his 25-year medical practice from western New York state to found Ethos Farm Wellness Center in Long Valley, New Jersey. He invested his entire life savings in a 20-year vision: the construction of an integrated holistic complex that includes his home, medical practice, an organic community-supported agriculture (CSA) enterprise and a wellness center that is very well-equipped. On his property is a stone barn dating from the early 1700s; he says that will become his wellness center.

The Daily Record reports:

Restoration is in the hands of Doc Miller who lived across the street and tended the heifers it once housed, and Miller's son Ezra. With studio space and an open commercial kitchen, it will be the setting for a variety of classes and programs in cooking, fitness and overall health.

'My dad said 'no thanks' and went home to die'

Weiss, who grew up in nearby Fair Lawn, discovered the farm 25 years prior when he was conducting research for medical school. It took about two years and $2.5 million to buy the 363 acres that makes up half of the Historic Scott Farm, the largest in Morris County's Preservation Program. Along with his wife, Deborah, and two children, he plans to reside in the 1836 home.

From the 1950s through the 1970s, the property had been home to a number of farm enterprises that grew a variety of crops; there were Harvestore silos, a free-stall dairy and milking parlor, and a riding facility. Weiss says plants fascinated and captivated him at a young age, and he says that his revelation came to him just one year out of medical training, when his attorney father was taken ill with pancreatic cancer that metasticized to other organs.

"The director at Sloan-Kettering told him that without therapy, he had one month, even with chemo. My dad said 'no thanks' and went home to die," Weiss told the paper.

His father's sickness caused him to research and introduce a macrobiotic diet; he flourished, enough to regain vitality, decrease his pain and go back to work full-time.

"He enjoyed life, and we had him for 18 more months," Weiss says. "That was when I discovered how effective a plant-based diet could be."

His philosophy comes from Hippocrates: "Let food be thy medicine and medicine thy food." What's more, he believes that he can help a new age of local, sustainable health become mainstream.

"Plant-based whole foods are the most powerful disease-modifying tools available to the medical practitioner. This can revolutionize everything," he told the Daily Record. "It's a natural way for farmers and doctors to join their efforts and remodel the way we take care of ourselves. The more we can demonstrate that true health lies in what we eat, priorities will force a change in the way health care is provided and paid for. That's a radical change."

'This is far more effective than drug-based medicine'

Weiss says he plans to see patients in an old wooden house on the farmland that was built during the World War II era but which has now been completely refurbished.

The area where vegetables will be grown is a 2.5-acre plot of land on a 15-acre field that has been farmed organically for the past two growing seasons. A 30-by-100-foot hoop greenhouse is capable of extending the growing season by several weeks, he says.

"The CSA is a great starting model to inspire change," Weiss observed. "If you're sick -- or don't want to become sick -- this is far more effective than drug-based medicine. Here we can help you change your diet, show you ways to increase physical activity. I know we can dramatically improve our community's health."

The Record reported:

Community supported agriculture is a business model in which subscribers sign up for shares of whatever Ethos harvests on a weekly basis during the 30-week growing season. A full share is $1200, $650 for half share. The fee includes wellness and cooking classes, key elements in Weiss' program.

Veteran MD Buys Farm and Prescribes Food As Medicine

by Paul Fassa

(NaturalNews) Meet Dr. Ronald Weiss, MD, an internist with a successful 25-year medical practice in West New York who moonlights as an assistant professor at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark. Weiss, a 52-year-old married father of two, sold his lucrative practice and liquidated all his assets so he could buy a 348-acre, 18th-century farm adjacent to Schooley's Mountain, in Long Valley, New Jersey.

In June of 2014, he launched Ethos Health, a combination of community supported agriculture (CSA) and his iconoclastic food-as-medicine medical practice. The farm currently supports 90 families on a membership basis with a seasonal repertoire of fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs.

Weiss believes that plant-based "whole foods are the most powerful disease-modifying tools available to practitioners -- more powerful than any drugs or surgeries." Weiss professes, and science agrees, that inflammation is the root of many if not most chronic diseases.

It therefore stands to reason that nutritionally dense, fresh fruits and vegetables are the best anti-inflammatory medicine money can buy, and it also conforms to the principal, mostly ignored maxim of Western medicine: "First do no harm."

Weiss clarified, "I am not saying if you fall down and break your ankle, I can fix it by putting a salve of mugwort on it. You need someone to fix your fracture. I am talking about treating and preventing chronic disease -- the heart attacks, the strokes, the cardiovascular disease, the cancers... the illnesses that are taking our economy and our nation down."

A compelling story

For the many debunkers, naysayers and doubters, Weiss shares a compelling story about one of his patients, 90-year-old Angelina Rotella of West New York, who was wheelchair-bound and suffered from congestive heart failure.

He told her that he could call 911 and have her admitted to the hospital or that she could follow his vegan, dietary prescription instead. Surprisingly, with the help of her daughter, Angelina chose the food-as-medicine option. The results were astounding by any measure.

Weiss explained, "She doesn't have diabetes anymore and chronic heart failure. She is cooking, sewing and walking around town. I'm not saying it's easy, but she seized the opportunity and she is transformed."

Within eight months, she lost 40 pounds. Both of Angelina's daughters were so impressed with their mother's recovery that they adopted the diet and lost a total of 80 lbs. and cured their pre-diabetic condition to boot.

Rotella-Suarez, the daughter who faithfully prepared Angelina's prescription meals, happily exuded: "It sounds like a hoax, but Dr. Weiss is absolutely thorough. He is the best of what the medical profession has to offer. He is not living in a make-believe world."

Weiss summarized: "Human health is directly related to the health of the environment, the production of food and how it is grown. I see this farm as an opportunity for me to take everything I've done all my life, all the biology and chemistry of plants I have studied, and link them to the human biological system."

Paradigm shift

Mark Hyman, MD, is an author, scholar and proponent of functional medicine, which systemically treats the root causes of disease, not merely its symptoms.

Hyman states: "Mounting research shows that there is no magic bullet to treat heart disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, arthritis, allergies, digestive disorders, headaches, fatigue, or any of the myriad problems we suffer from in the 21st century."

"But increasing evidence also shows us something else. It shows that food is the most powerful 'drug' we have not just to prevent, but also treat, cure, and reverse most chronic illnesses."

Blessings Suzanne,

I have always believed since joining the SDA Church that good nutrition could cure any disease. But, in the last ten years enough research has come out helping us to be more precise and clear with the treatments.

I believe now more than ever we can rely on good, clean nutrition to provide much better health than chemicals and drugs.

Pineapple Juice Is 500% More Effective Than Cough Syrup, Study Shows

by Sandeep Godiyal

(NaturalNews) There are all sort of reasons that people come down with a cough. This symptom can be caused by respiratory infections like bronchitis or pneumonia, a particularly bad allergic reaction, or viral infections like a cold or the flu. It can also be caused by certain medications, such as those which help treat high blood pressure. Whatever the reason, this can be a difficult condition to live with, especially if that coughing is interfering with the ability to get a good night's sleep. There are many products on the market that can help tamp down a cough – but before reaching for a bottle of cough syrup, read on to find out more about pineapple juice and why recent studies have found it to be even more effective that mainstream products at taming an irritating cough.

Why is pineapple juice so effective for coughs?

Back in 2010, researchers in India – which has a strong history of natural healing due to its Ayurvedic traditions – compared the effects of over-the-counter syrups to a natural mixture of pineapple juice, salt, pepper and honey on the coughs of tuberculosis patients. It was found that the natural mixture was far more effective at soothing down coughs and throat irritation than the commercial preparation.

This sparked other studies on the subject, and scientists came to the conclusion that the reason that pineapple juice is so effective for taming a cough is the presence of bromelain, an enzyme that has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which allow it to reduce irritation of the throat and thus relieve even persistent coughing.

Also helpful is the fact that pineapple contains high amounts of vitamin C (another power antioxidant) as well as a wealth of vitamin A and minerals like magnesium, manganese and potassium, all of which help boost the immune system and make it easier for the body to fight off infections that cause coughs in the first place.

A recipe for a pineapple-based cough remedy

Below is a recipe for a pineapple-based cough remedy similar to one used in the Indian study mentioned earlier in this article.

Ingredients:
* 1 cup pineapple juice
* 1/4 cup fresh-squeezed lemon juice
* 1 teaspoon ginger powder
* 1 tablespoon organic, raw honey
* Dash of salt
* Dash of cayenne pepper

Directions:

Combine all ingredients together and process in a blender. The remedy can be used up to three times a day to help counteract a cough.

In short, cough remedies with pineapple juice – or even pineapple juice on its own – are a great way to treat a cough naturally due to the presence of powerful antioxidants like bromelain as well as other vitamins and minerals which support the body's immune system while it is fighting off an illness.

Garlic Naturally Obliterates Antibiotic-resistant Urinary Tract Infections Where Big Pharma Fails

by Daniel Barker

(NaturalNews) Besides being one of my favorite recipe ingredients, I've always been a firm believer in the medicinal properties of garlic. An indispensable flavor in many foods, garlic also provides a wide range of health benefits in terms of prevention as well as treatment.

Garlic has been used for thousands of years in treating dozens of illnesses and as a general health-boosting dietary ingredient. Modern science has shown that its chemical compounds have a measurable effect in fighting bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa.

A recent study carried out by the Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences in India and published in the Pertanika Journal of Tropical Agricultural Science found that garlic can also be an effective treatment for the antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria involved in many cases of urinary tract infection (UTI).

According to the researchers, more than half of the 166 bacteria strains found in the urine of people with a UTI proved to be highly resistant to antibiotics. However, 82 percent of the resistant strains were wiped out by a simple garlic extract.

In other words, the bacteria strains that have developed a resistance to antibiotics can be treated with a completely natural compound that has no side effects, costs almost nothing and will not create "resistant strains."

The results are significant not only because garlic could indeed prove to be an effective alternative to increasingly ineffective antibiotics for treating UTIs and other conditions, but also because they illustrate an increasing recognition of natural medicine's relevance and validity among the medical establishment.

The authors of the study noted:

The results of the present study support the use of natural products as affordable effective substitutes and/or additives for reducing the disease burden and overall cost of disease management.

Drug-based treatments for many illnesses have shown to be either limited in effectiveness or completely ineffective when compared to natural treatments. Many drugs have side effects that are nearly as bad as the disease itself.

Western medicine has allowed itself to become so influenced by Big Pharma that it is no longer an institution that promotes health and healing. Instead, it now appears to exist almost solely to generate profits for giant pharmaceutical companies.

It is encouraging to see scientific studies that focus on the benefits of natural treatments. There is a place for pharmaceutical medicine, but I believe Nature provides a treatment or cure for almost every human illness or disorder.

I also believe that natural foods are a major factor in preventive health and that garlic is one of the most important medicinal plants found in nature.

Other medicinal properties of garlic

As noted above, garlic has antimicrobial properties that make it effective in fighting viruses, fungi and other organisms. It can be used to treat and prevent colds, flu and infections, but garlic also provides several other health-boosting properties that make it one of nature's true "superfoods."

Garlic is super-nutritious and loaded with vitamin B6, vitamin C, manganese and selenium. It also contains other minerals and vitamins in small amounts.

Research has shown that garlic helps build and maintain a healthy immune system and can help to prevent many illnesses, such as colds. It also reduces the symptoms and duration of colds and flu by significant percentages.

Among garlic's other benefits are its ability to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. The antioxidants found in garlic could be effective in preventing Alzheimer's and dementia as well as providing an anti-aging effect on human cells.

Garlic has been shown to remove toxic heavy metals from the bloodstream, and there is some evidence suggesting that it promotes bone health as well.

Garlic is wonderfully fragrant and flavorful in the kitchen. Easy to grow and inexpensive to buy, garlic is truly one of nature's miracle foods and medicines.

Ancient Onion and Garlic Medicinal Recipe Cures Drug-resistant Superbug Infections

by Amy Goodrich

(NaturalNews) A thousand-year-old potion found in an Old English manuscript in the British Library to treat an eye infection has amazed the scientific world. Researcher at the University of Nottingham found it to be very effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, known as MRSA.

Combating MRSA and other antibiotic-resistant bacteria is one of the biggest challenges hospitals face each year. Due to overuse of and overexposure to antibiotics, some bacterial strains have evolved to withstand our drugs. This gives rise to a whole army of superbugs which are very hard to treat and cause the death of at least 23,000 people each year.

Anglo-Saxon expert Dr. Christina Lee, from the University of Nottingham, found and translated this "eye salve" from Bald's Leechbook, which is a collection of ancient remedies to treat a wide range of ailments.

Take cropleek and garlic, of both equal quantities, pound them well together, take wine and bullocks' gall, of both equal quantities, mix with the leek, put this then into a brazen vessel, let it stand nine days in the brass vessel, wring out through a cloth and clear it well, put it into a horn, and about night time apply it with a feather to the eye; the best leechdom. -- Recipe to treat a stye, translated from Bald's Leechbook.

Only after teaming up with colleague Dr. Freya Harrison and her team from the microbiology department were they able to recreate the ancient salve.

They tried to make the remedy as close as possible to the original recipe, which was not easy since our crops now differ a lot from the ones in the 10th century.

They tested the eye salve on a large culture of MRSA, and the results were rather unexpected.

"We did not see this coming at all," said microbiologist Harrison, the lead researcher. "We thought that Bald's eye salve might show a small amount of antibiotic activity. ... But we were absolutely blown away by just how effective the combination of ingredients was," she added.

They found that the unique combination of Bald's eye salve killed up to 90 percent of MRSA. To back up their findings, Texas Tech University tested the salve on MRSA skin wounds on mice and came to the same conclusion.

The salve might be more powerful than any antibiotic on the market right now.

"We let our artificial 'infections' grow into dense, mature populations called 'biofilms,' where the individual cells bunch together and make a sticky coating that makes it hard for antibiotics to reach them," Harrison said in a statement. "But unlike many modern antibiotics, Bald's eye salve has the power to breach these defenses."

This new study shows us that we can learn important lessons from our past. It is actually not the first time researchers found the answer in nature instead of the lab. There may be a lot of dodgy medieval practices and remedies out there, but great wisdom is hiding in these ancient books as well. Artemisinin to treat malaria, for instance, is another substance that came to us via an age-old Chinese medical text.

"This truly cross-disciplinary project explores a new approach to modern health care problems by testing whether medieval remedies contain ingredients which kill bacteria or interfere with their ability to cause infection," Dr. Harrison concluded.

This research project will be presented at the Society for General Microbiology conference in Birmingham, UK, and the results will also be submitted to the journal Nature.

Forget All The Store-bought Products For 'Air-freshening' And Choose These Household Plants That Naturally Purify Your Air Instead

by J. D. Heyes

(NaturalNews) Spring is rapidly approaching, and soon it will be time to open your windows and breathe in the first fresh scents of a world coming back to life after a dormant winter. But you can get the benefits of wonderful scents naturally, and all year round, by adding certain plants to your living spaces.

As noted by the Healthy Sustainable Living blog, most people realize that plants in the home release oxygen, but they can also clear the air of mold and other toxins, in some cases as well as or better than your home's air conditioning/heating systems. The site notes that a number of studies have shown that certain plants are able to rid a room of about 89 percent of harmful toxins like formaldehyde and xylene.

Natural air-freshening plants

Also, if you or anyone in your family has allergies or just wants to breathe better, cleaner air in your home, here are a dozen plants that will purify your air and target specific pollutants:

Aloe: This is a great plant to put in each one of your bedrooms, actually. They absorb benzene, carbon dioxide and formaldehyde. Plus, the gel from Aloe vera has been found to multiply the oxygen transportation and diffusion capabilities of red blood cells.

Garden mum: In research conducted by NASA, garden mums were found to be air-purification monsters, getting rid of ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde and xylene from indoor air. This variety is both popular and inexpensive, and you can also plant them outdoors after they bloom.

English ivy: This clinging evergreen vine also removes benzene and formaldehyde, as well as trichloroethylene and xylene, from indoor air. Widely grown as an ornamental plant, it's not always a suitable indoor variety, as it can grow up to 100 feet if left unchecked.

Spider plant: Also known as Chlorophytum comosum, this variety is among the simplest of houseplants to grow. That makes them a perfect choice for beginners or owners who are, shall we say, forgetful and not used to having a plant responsibility. Spider plants can also photosynthesize under minimal light, and one plant can clean air up to 200 square meters (about 2,100 square feet).

Dracaena: This plant comes in more than 40 varieties, so you'll have no problem finding one to fit your home or office decor. They grow long, wide leaves that sometimes striate with lines of white, red or cream. While these plants clean the air well, they are toxic to dogs and cats, so pet owners may want to consider a different variety.

Ficus: Though these have become the [censored] of jokes, there is a reason so many people put them in their homes and offices – they are terrific air purification plants. Also known as "rubber plant," the Ficus needs bright sun (or office illumination) and gets rid of formaldehyde. The NASA study showed that Ficus benjamina is capable of removing formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene from air, while the Healthy Sustainable Living blog claims Ficus elastica can purify air of formaldehyde.

Snake planet: This houseplant is nearly invincible, as it is one of the most difficult to kill. It does need water occasionally, however; though generally speaking it prefers drier conditions and sun. Good for the bedroom, it produces oxygen while removing benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene and xylene.

Chamaedorea seifrizii: Better known as bamboo palm, this variety is a star filterer of formaldehyde. They thrive in bright sun light. One reason they filter air so well is because they can grow to be 4- to 12-feet high. They're also very pet-friendly.

Peace lilies: This common houseplant removes benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, ammonia and xylene and exists best in shade, though it needs a dose of sunlight to thrive. While the soil should be left moist, you should only water it when the soil is dry.

Boston fern: You don't have to live in the historic northeastern city to enjoy the air-cleansing benefits of this toxin eater. These plants prefer cool locations with high humidity and indirect light. They grow fairly easy but need moist soil, requiring a good soak only about once a month. Boston ferns love to absorb formaldehyde and xylene.

Chrysanthemum: Nicknamed the "florist's daisy," these have really gained popularity as an indoor plant – and toxin absorber. NASA says they love to absorb benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene.
