Part I

Prologue: My purpose in the following article is to stimulate awareness, study, discussion and to get your feedback. As with all teachings this one should be prayerfully considered and compared with the Word. The article discusses the identity of the three kings of end-time prophecy – the Kings of the North, South and East. In the time of Daniel at the overthrow of Babylon, the river Euphrates was diverted and Cyrus the Great and his armies penetrated Babylon's fortifications via the dry river bed when it fell on the night of Belshazzar's feast. Revelation draws on that history to illustrate the final fall and destruction of spiritual Babylon and helps identify for us the three kings of the end-times.

According to Genesis 2 the Euphrates is the fourth of four rivers that originated from the central spring in the Garden of Eden that watered the entire earth before the flood.

Quote:
And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. The name of the first is Pison: . . . And the name of the second river is Gihon: . . .And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: . . .And the fourth river is Euphrates. Gen 2:10-14 .

The name Euphrates means “rushing” or “to break forth” implying a river prone to overflow its banks and flood. This characteristic is used in scripture after the flood to describe the nations that occupied the Euphrates basin, the Assyrians and Babylonians. These empires were notorious for their grasping ambition that was pictured as an overflowing river that would not be contained within its own banks but would flood the surrounding lands, capturing and subjugating neighboring nations.
Quote:

Now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria, and all his glory: and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks: And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel. Isa 8:7-8.

The Euphrates is also significant in scripture as the divinely appointed north-eastern boundary of the Promised Land. Israel because of it's unfaithfulness only extended it's territory to the Euphrates briefly under King David and Solomon's rule but all of the territory to the south-west of the Euphrates was allotted to them by God as part of their divine inheritance:
Quote:

And I will set thy bounds from the Red sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee. . . .Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates. Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them. . . . Every place whereon the soles of your feet shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates, even unto the uttermost sea shall your coast be. Exo 23:31 Deu 1:7, 8, 11:24.

God through the prophets warned the Israelites that they would be dispossessed and taken captive beyond the Euphrates. They were removed beyond that limit because the Euphrates marked the north-eastern boarder of the promised land:
Quote:

For the LORD shall smite Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water, and he shall root up Israel out of this good land, which he gave to their fathers, and shall scatter them beyond the river, because they have made their groves, provoking the LORD to anger. 1Ki 14:15.

In Isaiah we have an ancient prophecy that helps us identify the Kings of the East that cross the dried up Euphrates in Revelation 16:

Quote:
And the LORD shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and with his mighty wind shall he shake his hand over the river, [the Euphates] and shall smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over dryshod. And there shall be an highway for the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt. Isa 11:15 and 16.

The Kings of the East of Revelation 16 are the dispossessed of spiritual Israel who repent and return to God via the “highway for the remnant” that God provides in the last days for their liberation. In their humiliation they overcome as kings and are liberated from the bondage of sin, set free by divine decree. Just as the Jordan was dried up to allow Israel passage into their inheritance the Euphrates is dried up to allow back the remnant of Israel into the heavenly Promised Land. And just as the crossing of the Jordan was immediately followed by the miraculous overthrow of Jericho, so the drying up of the Euphrates portends the overthrow and utter destruction of Babylon at the hand of the hosts of spiritual Israel in the battle of Armageddon.

The method and timing of the overthrow of Jericho by Israel's armies is prophetic of the battle of Armageddon and of the overthrow of spiritual Babylon. At Jericho's overthrow there was a seven fold warning of impending doom, each day beginning with a warning blast of a trumpet like the seven trumpets of Revelation 8 to 11 that portend the overthrow of spiritual Babylon. The overthrow of Jericho culminated in a seven fold march around the city on the seventh day and as Jericho's destruction was immediate and complete, at the end Babylon is completely destroyed in one hour. The final trumpet and shout that brought down the mighty walls of Jericho apparently resonated with the earth. In the same way, the quaking of the earth by the armies of God is the means God uses at the final destruction of Babylon at the seventh trumpet and plague:
Quote:

And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, [as with Jericho, the trumpet blast, voices and shouts of the host announce that the fall of Babylon and the reign of Christ] and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. . . . And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail [these are the tools that God uses to bring Babylon's rule to an end]. . . . And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. Rev 11:15, 16; Rev 16:17 -19.

Part II

Quote:

And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. . . . He shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps. But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many. And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him. Dan 11:40-45.

In the mid to late 1990's Jeff Pippenger and others gave traction to the view in Adventism that the 1989 fall of communism fulfilled the prediction of the overrunning of the King of the South in Daniel 11:40 above. But this passage describes an armed military conflict and that didn't happen at the fall of the Berlin Wall which was a bloodless event, thank the Lord. Later, in the aftermath of 9/11 when the American-lead coalition forces invaded Iraq and Afghanistan we have a better match: The King of the South, Islam (according to some) pushed at the King of the North (the Christian West lead by America, NATO and it's allies) by bringing down the twin towers and the King of the North responds by overrunning parts of the middle east. But again this view also does not fulfill all of the particulars such as planting his tabernacle between the seas in the glorious holy mountain. The complete fulfillment of the text must be future.

The statue of Nebuchadnezzar's dream in Daniel 2 has two legs of iron and feet of iron and clay. The legs represent the Roman empire in its two phases, pagan and papal and the feet of iron and clay the successor of Rome, the beast and the image of it. Revelation 13 tells us that the world wonders after the beast and then endorses and worships the image of it. The final manifestation of the dragon is the image of the beast, Babylon, empowered by the lamb-like beast.

But Babylon is judged by her neighbors, (Rev. 16:12 and 17:12) which have their parallel in the ten toes in the feet of the image of Daniel 2 and the ten horns of the beast (Rev. 17:3 and 13:1). These ten kings burn her with fire and her destruction is so terrible and complete that the great men of the earth, the world's trade czars, politicians, kings and business leaders, withdraw far from Babylon to watch her destruction from a safe distance.

Ellen White tells us that the mixture of iron and clay in the feet of the image of Daniel 2 represents a mixture of church and state. Similarly, the beast and woman in Revelation 17 symbolize the same adulterous union of the secular powers with the world's leading institutions of religion. The woman represents the fallen churches of the west, the seven-headed beast she rides represents the political powers, and together they form the last day coalition committing spiritual fornication. Babylon, under the leadership of the fallen churches of the West, is the entity that will form alliances with many nations and religions and will overrun others, setting up its tabernacle between the seas and the holy mountain. We understand this as symbolic of a church-state domination but whether it is also literal, time will tell. Babylon's claim to be the world's moral authority in matters of conscience and religion is the man of sin's final attempt to erect a false, human sanctuary for the world's collective conscience diverting men and women from the true sanctuary of God, from His law and from the New Covenant and the Most Holy, priestly ministry and reign of Christ.

The news from the east that greatly troubles the King of the North, spiritual Babylon, is the message that the REAL Christ is coming back to claim his throne. Like Herod, when he heard from the Magi, kings of the east, that the true king was coming, he attempted to destroy the rightful heir to David's throne. And Heord's son acted similarly, beheading the herald of Christ, John the Baptist. In the same way, when tidings from the east come to the King of the North, he goes out in great fury to destroy and to “utterly make away many.” Daniel 11:44. This is the battle of Armageddon and it culminates in the death decree issued against all who do not accept the counterfeit kingdom with its counterfeit day of worship of its counterfeit messiah.

But before the death decree is carried out, God delivers His people. The ten horns of the beast turn on and destroy Babylon the Great. The reign of the ten kings is brief, only an hour according to scripture. This one hour period could indicate a short duration or it may be a prophetic hour of 15 literal days and since one hour is mentioned twice for emphasis the latter seems quite possible:
Quote:

And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.” “The merchants of the earth," that have "waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies," "shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing, and saying, Alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls! For in one hour so great riches is come to nought.” Revelation 17:12, 13,16; 18:11, 3, 15-17. (See GC 656.)

Some students of prophecy have indentified the ten horns/kings of Revelation 13 and 17 as being the popular movement against the false religious leaders of Babylon after the close of probation who destroy the whore. But this view breaks the symbolism of the horns as kings or nations. If it was simply an anarchy of every man taking revenge on the now exposed false religious leaders what would be the point of representing them as 10 horns? Apparently even though the final rule of the ten kings is brief, there will be some strong leadership at a national and international level that provides cohesion to the movement to unseat the whore. And this helps explain why it is done so swiftly and effectively – it is managed by 10 well-coordinated powers whom God uses to judge Babylon the Great.

To summarize, we know from Daniel 11 that at the end the King of the South pushes at the King of the North but is overwhelmed and overrun by the King of the North. And we've seen how that following this the ten kings in turn prevail against Babylon. Now for a few more thoughts on the final bid of Babylon for the hearts and minds of humanity. What will that interval look like after the world wonders after her but before she is humbled by the ten kings?

This interval is the climax of the great controversy and it occurs at the sixth plague:
Quote:

And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. . . And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. Rev 16:12, 16.

Notice that the Euphrates is dried up as it was by Cyrus the Great at the overthrow of ancient Babylon and this is the final sign that precedes the full unleashing of the winds of strife. Compare the above passage with the parallel passage below:
Quote:

And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men. And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them. And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone. By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths. For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt. Rev. 9:13-19.

The terrible description above is of a global incendiary conflict that will unseat the whore. The good news, as we know it is that this is where the climax of the ages comes when the kingdoms of earth are restored to Christ. The stone cut out without hands pulverizes the feet and the entire image, the wind sweeps the dust away and the stone becomes a mighty mountain filling the earth. When? At the battle of Armageddon. But who are the protagonists in this final war? Who are the Kings of the East? If we are faithful, it will be you and me. Notice what Ellen White says:
Quote:

The battle of Armageddon will be fought, and that day must find none of us sleeping. Wide-awake we must be, as wise virgins having oil in our vessels with our lamps. What is this? Grace, Grace. {14MR 286.3}

The power of the Holy Ghost must be upon us, and the Captain of the Lord's host will stand at the head of the angels of heaven to direct the battle. Solemn events before us are yet to transpire. Trumpet after trumpet is to be sounded, vial after vial poured out one after another upon the inhabitants of the earth. {14MR 287.1}

We are [to] think how heaven regards these events, and to be in harmony with the transactions going on in heaven in preparing a people to stand in this, the day of the Lord, and having done all to stand [Eph. 6:13]. Let the light and power of the sunbeams of righteousness enter into the soul. [Rev. 19:1-6, quoted. Reproduced below.] {14MR 288.2}

We need to study the pouring out of the seventh vial. The powers of evil will not yield up the conflict without a struggle. But Providence has a part to act in the battle of Armageddon. When the earth is lighted with the glory of the angel of Revelation eighteen, the religious elements, good and evil, will awake from slumber, and the armies of the living God will take the field. {Mar 257.1}

That day is now upon us when “the earth is lighted with the glory of the angel of Revelation eighteen”. It's time for the sleeping virgins to “awake from slumber, and the armies of the living God [to] take the field.” In the heat of this conflict, remember bothers and sisters when the going is rough we are on the winning side. It is now and it will be in the future “the best of times and the worst of times”. But soon the race will be over and the victory won! There is no question who will win the conflict. The only question is whether you and I will be on the winning side.
Quote:

And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God: For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand. And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose up for ever and ever. And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia. And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great. And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth! Rev. 19:1-6.

Rather than linking the three frog spirits in Revelation 16 exclusively to papal Babylon, some people view the dragon as Spiritualism, the beast as Catholicism, and the false prophet as Apostate American Protestantism. Thus the drying up of the Euphrates is the cessation of people flooding into Babylon (the Roman and Apostate Protestant Churches). The priests’ pedophile scandal has caused decent people to flee the Roman Church. Thus Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed a Year of Faith (11 October 2012 - 24 November 2013) to evangelize the world and to bring people back into his fold.

Due to the RC priests' fornication scandal the Spiritual Euphrates has been drying up. The RC now has two living popes as ancient Babylon had Kings Nabonidus and Belshazzar. Then on the eve of Babylon's fall Babylon had a third king/ruler, Daniel. Thus there is to soon be a third pope on the eve of Christ's Advent when the Euphrates is dried up.

The Revelation is the supplement of Daniel... These messages were given, not for those that uttered the prophecies, but for us who are living amid the scenes of their fulfillment. 17MR 19.1

As the people flowing into papal Babylon is drying up so are the people that live in the Euphrates River basin. They are fleeing from ISIS to save their lives.

Who is the false prophet?

Quote:
Are not such teachers the pretenders to whom Christ referred when He said, ‘Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing…’ in opposition to the requirements of God, he measures himself and others by his own finite, fallible standard…the pope of Rome… He claims great spiritual riches…and boasts of the grace of Christ, which he has turned into lasciviousness…and by smooth words and deceptive speeches will deceive the unwary and those who do not try the professions of men by the great Tester of character. Just a few points here;

1) This event led to the fall of the Soviet Union just a few years later.

2) This event was supported at that time by the United States. The lamb-like beast supporting the leopard-like beast. (Rev. 13) This is the King of the North.

3) Russia adopted capitalism and that closed society was brought into the global community.

I believe all these and more fulfilled Daniel 11:40. I never really believed it had to be an actual military conflict. Although, I never completely ruled it out either.

Point #2 (United States. The lamb-like beast supporting the leopard-like beast. (Rev. 13) This is the King of the North) seems to challenge Jeff Pippenger's view:

Quote:
In Daniel 11:41 Rome, the “king of the north,” will enter the United States (the glorious land) through the passage of a national Sunday law. http://understanding-daniel-revelation.com/Research-Library/KofN.pdf, p. 22
