Can I get the answers to this question that any of you may have?

What change took place in Hebrews 7:11-12?

What change took place?

Where did this change take place?

When did this change take place?

Thank you.

I would like to ask a few more questions;

What change in the priesthood? Heb. 7:12

What change in the law? Heb. 7:12

What disannulling of the commandment? Heb. 7:18

Anybody?

The book of Hebrews' main theme is the transition from the shadows or types that served to point forward to Christ's death and subsequent High Priest ministry in the heavenly sanctuary, to the reality.

When the reality came, the types and all the regulations and commands related to those types passed away.

The ministration of the priests connected with the earthly sanctuary, pointed to the ministration of Christ in the heavenly Sanctuary, they too were a type, or shadow of the coming reality.

When the type met its antitype the shadow was lost in the bright light of the substance - and that event marked the change.

Why is there dispute? A careful reading of the book of Hebrews is plain -- the shadow ceases when the substance comes: the type does not reach beyond the antitype.

All the laws and regulations concerning the offering of goats and calves and sheep were no longer necessary as goats and calves and sheep were no longer to be sacrificed.

Christ the Son of God, had died on Calvary. Here then is the dividing point. And when Christ cried out "IT IS FINISHED", the ground shook as an earthquake caused considerable damage, inside the temple, the veil was torn in two from the top to the bottom, and the lamb escaped, all as a solemn demonstration that the temple services were forever finished; for that blood was now shed that was to be ministered for us in the heavenly Sanctuary, by our Great High Priest, and it was to the heavenly sanctuary everyone was to look for salvation and pardon.

The whole typical or earthly sanctuary gave place to the Sanctuary in heaven; and Christ, when he ascended into heaven was declared worthy to carry out his mediation for us there.
"Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation." Rev. 5:9

What law was disannulled? The laws regulating the shadows -- the sanctuary ceremonies, the sacrificial offerings, the work of the priests, all were figures.

Hebrews tells us the priests "served unto the example and shadow of heavenly things." Heb. 8:4,5.
All of it pointed forward to the greater and more perfect priesthood by Christ in the Heavenly sanctuary.

The law of the priesthood demanded
1. Only a descendant of Aaron could be High Priest.
Christ was a descendant of Judah --
2. A priest could not be a king
Christ is both priest and king of kings!

Christ is a priest after the order of Melchezedec
Melchezedec, king of Salem in Abraham's time was also only a type -- a type of a priest/king.
Christ is the REAL priest/ king!

Christ is both the antitype of the sacrificial offering and the antitype of earthly priesthood. He first shed his blood and provided the offering. Then he entered, "with His own blood" upon his work as priest.

What the earthly priests did in figure Christ does in fact.

This is the theme taught us in the book of Hebrews respecting the transfer of the type to the great reality of our Savior.

7:11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need [was there] that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

The Levitical priesthood had been put under law by God pertaining to all their work; what they were to wear, how they washed, how they were to perform the sanctuary duties, when to do those duties, what they were to use to perform these duties, etc. many detailed commands.
.
If this Levitical priesthood, which is supported by all this law, was, indeed, the means of dealing with sin what need was there for a greater Priest?

The point to be made is that the Levitic Priesthood was only a “type” it could bring no real salvation or forgiveness or cleansing. Real salvation was possible only in looking to the reality to which the type pointed. There was need for a different priesthood – one that could really cleanse and take away sin.

7:12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

For with the priesthood undergoing a change, of necessity a change also of law occurs.

The verse is stating as fact that the priesthood is undergoing a change, it is changing from the shadow which was only pointing to the reality and which in itself could not accomplish the release from sin, to the wonderful commencement of the Reality of Christ as our High Priest!

7:13 For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar.

The audience to which Hebrews is written know the law of the priesthood – That law does not allow anyone except a descendant of Aaron to be a priest. How can Christ be priest for He belongs to a different tribe – the tribe of Judah. The law of the priesthood does not allow anyone from that tribe to serve as a priest. In fact king Asa, was stricken with leprosy when he entered the temple and attempted to do the work of a priest.

7:14 For [it is] evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.
7:15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,

The author now shows that laws concerning the shadows changed with the shadows. Shadows are not permanent, thus laws governing them are not permanent, but fade away when the shadow is no more.

In the days before Moses none of those laws governing the Levitical priesthood existed. The first born, of each family or tribe held the role of priest – offering the sacrifice, etc. Abraham held the role of priest. Genesis shows Abraham built an altar and offered sacrifice everywhere he dwelt. Yet Abraham acknowledge a priest “greater” than himself in the priest/king Melchizedec.

7:15-16 for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.

carnal commandment

The laws of Levitical priesthood were fleshly commandments – an outward law that demanded one be a descendant of Aaron, have no physical defects, do a lot of ritual cleansing ceremonies, etc. These were the laws that qualified one to be a priest.

But Christ qualifies as a high priest because in Him is life – endless life not only for Himself but for all Who come to Him for salvation.

7:17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Melchizedec was a priest/king. He appears in scripture without any description of who his parents are, and how he fits in the flow of history. He is a type of Christ – Christ is the reality of endless life, and existed from eternity and throughout eternity.

7:18 For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof.

The author now reiterates the necessity for a change in the law that occurs with the change of priesthood. But it’s more than just a change, it is a cancellation of the whole preceding commandment that supported the Levitical priesthood until the time of Jesus. He is specifically addressing the law of the priesthood.

The whole Levitical priesthood as well as the sanctuary in which they ministered, was set up to be an object lesson to teach ABOUT Christ’s atoning sacrifice, priestly ministry, and work of justifying and sanctifying sinners. The actors in the object lesson were weak human beings, the commands that governed their role could only govern the outward fleshly performance, it was not the real thing.

Yet, the Israelites had lost sight of the lesson God wanted them to learn, and they elevated the shadow into thinking it was the real thing. Thus it was unprofitable.

7:19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope [did]; by the which we draw nigh unto God.
The purpose of the law of the priesthood was to point people to the better hope of the coming Savior. And indeed Christ as our High Priest does do what the Levitical priesthood could not do, He brings in better hope and draws us near unto God.

Your post dedication was good overall, but, you make the same mistake everyone seems to make. In Genesis, the Levitical priesthood was represented with Melchizedek. (Genesis 14:17-20) I believe this to mean that the High Priest of Aaron was a type that had been fulfilled at the time Hebrews was written. The Levitical Priesthood was NOT perfect to save the soul from sin. The original, which was brought to view long before the Levitical Priesthood existed, was perfect as Christ was perfect.

But, even though there won't be anymore High Priests after Aaron, the Levitical Priesthood will remain.

Let's talk about place for a minute; The change of Hebrews 7:11-12 took place in Heaven, but, not on earth. At least not yet. The change on earth will be instituted when Christ comes to earth with the New Jerusalem at the end of the 1000 years.

Hebrews 8:1-6, especially verses 4-5 clearly state that Jesus can't come to this earth because the law of the Levitical Priesthood is still binding on this earth now.

Another aspect of this change in Hebrews 7:11-12 is that the change had to do with the High Priest! There won't be any more High Priests after the order of Aaron!

From what we learn in Genesis 14:17-20, the High Priest for the Levitical Priesthood is and has always been Melchizedek! So, the type of the High Priest after Aaron was fulfilled in Jesus and was no longer needed.

Yet, the Levitical Priesthood continues in the Heavenly Sanctuary. This is why the Pastors and Elders today serve as representatives of the Levitical Priesthood.

I would also like to point out that Hebrews 7:11-12 are part of the "interpretation" of Genesis 14:17-20 that Paul started with in Hebrews 7:1-2.

Exactly what Hebrews 7:11-12 is about. But, even though the High Priest after Aaron is fulfilled, the Levitical Priesthood is still in existence in the Heavenly Sanctuary. Although they may not actually be serving there while Christ in ministering in the Most Holy Place of the Heavenly Sanctuary.
