Where can I find....

Where can I find.... - 09/09/01 02:43 AM

Where would I look for a grinder for grains?
I'd like to start grinding my own flour if I can.
I am supposed to eat only whole grain products and this way I can make sure that they are.
Also if anyone knows how to use a blender for this for now, any information would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I can think of a couple places right off hand, but don't readily have the addresses. I'll have to find them, but both places sell their catalogs in may books stores for about $4.00 each.

Lehman's is a store here in Ohio that sells to the Amish. They have a catalog that carries a lot of hard to find items.

The Cumberland General Store in Tennessee is very similar to Lehman's.

Lehman's is online. Use search on their page and look for "mills."

At the Cumberland General Store do a search for the same.

I also found some more sights by searching in the Google search engine. A lot of sites came up, but I didn't look at all of them. Here are three that I did look at:
http://www.homestead-products.com/mills.htm
http://www.fernsnutrition.com/hmgm.html
http://www.zyz.com/survivalcenter/mills.html

Grain mills begin about $60.00 for a hand grinding model and go up in price, the highest I saw tonight was $600.00 for an electric model. I have not used one, but I have been told and read that hand grinding is difficult, especially since the grain usually has to be run through the mill several times in the cheaper mills. You also want one with stone burrs which grind better. There is some info on some of the last 3 sites I listed.

Thank you a bunch.
I have already been looking at them and will have to wait for a bit.
Only one I can afford is the one I need anyway, good upper body workout for someone like me with CHF.
Just have to figure out how to use both hands in a bicycle motion.

Do you have a food processor with a coffee/seed/spices grinder attachment ? Try that or do several small batches in a blender on high speed.

Ed, dear, unless he has a Vitamix, a blender isn't powerful enough to finely grind up grain. A coffee grinder probably would but you'd have to grind several batches to get enough for a load of bread.

Nope.
No Vitamix.
Who sells those?
Are they cheaper than a grinder?
Do they last for a while?

Sorry, just full of questions this evening.
