Once Saved, Always Saved?

Once Saved, Always Saved? - 11/28/22 05:44 PM

We had a visitor at our door today who believes that "once saved, always saved."

What Bible verses are they using in order to substantiate such a belief?

What Bible verses show that this is not a Bible-based belief?

Bible verses used to prove those saved were predestined to be saved likewise the lost were predestined to be lost
Romans 8:29-30
Ephesians 1:5
Romans 9:20-22
Ephesians 4:30

Once saved nothing can separate us from God verses
Romans 8:35
John 5:24

Yes God predestined us for salvation but it is our choice whom we will serve and whether we accept that destination. and yes people can fall away. These are some verses we use to show this:

Romans 10:35-39
1Cor 9:27 Paul guarding against being cast away
Matt 25. The five foolish virgins
Hebrews 3:12-14. Hold on to the end lest you fall away
John 15:2-6. Every branch in Christ that does not bear fruit is cast away
Exodus 32:30-35 compare with Rev 3:4-5 on names kept or blotted out of book of life
Ezekiel 18:24-26. If a righteous man turns away and does wickedly will he live?
Col 2:18-19. Let no man rob you of the prize
1thess 3:5. The tempter made everything in vain
1thess 3:6 we live if we stand fast in the Lord
1timothy 1:18-20 some make shipwreck of their faith
1timothy 6:11-12 some led astray from the faith by their greed. We need to fight the good fight of fsith. Lay hold on it.
Heb 2:1-3 pay attention lest you drift away

This summer while on holiday, I had a conversation with the very knowledgeable curator of a creation based museum in Alberta. After a long discussion of Noah?s Ark and Bible translations, he asked me if I knew for certain that I was saved? I replied that I had asked Jesus to forgive my sins, give me strength to overcome, and come into my heart; therefore, I had hope and faith that by God?s mercy I was saved. He was not satisfied, but wanted to know if I KNEW FOR CERTAIN that I was saved and would go to heaven? And, if I had been ?born again? John 3:3, and was now a member of the family of God and could be 100% certain that I was destined for heaven.

I said that all of God?s promises are conditional, but he seemed incapable of accepting that it is possible to lose salvation once one has been born again. In answer to biblical warnings of the dangers of losing eternal life, like the ones cited by dedication, he claimed that those who lost the battle were never really born again. When I pointed out that Satan who stood in the very presence of God?s throne, fell, he told me that Satan had never been born again and was therefore never a true member of God?s family.

I suggested that the churches are filled with numerous tares who think they are wheat, and asked how one could know for certain they are not an unsaved tare? He told me that ?you know in your heart?. I then asked if the knowledge of salvation is based on a feeling? To which, he replied again, ?no, no, you just know in your heart?.

I began my christian journey in the Pentecostal/charismatic churches, so ?just knowing in your heart? is something I have heard many times. It amounts to chasing after a feeling. This is an extremely perilous view, and may easily lead one to follow miracles and wonders rather than the Word of God. We may never know how many souls have been lost because they were 100% certain that they were saved and that nothing could cause them to fall.

Philippians 2:12 ?Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.?

Jeremiah 17:9 ?The heart [is] deceitful above all [things], and desperately wicked: who can know it??

Revelation 16:13-14 ?And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs [come] out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, [which] go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.?

Satan had never been born again and was therefore never a true member of God's family?

Doesn't he know that Satan was Lucifer, prior to his fall, and that he was the covering cherub?

Isaiah 14:12 AKJV How are you fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how are you cut down to the ground, which did weaken the nations!

Ezekiel 28:14 You are the anointed cherub that covers; and I have set you so: you were on the holy mountain of God; you have walked up and down in the middle of the stones of fire. 15 You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, till iniquity was found in you.
