Are the Books of Heaven real? - 07/08/19 01:21 AM

In this post from the thread, "Concern over President Trump's Impeachment", His Child brought up Rev. 3:5 as evidence for an investigative judgment. This is not about that judgment but about the books purportedly involved.

Revelation 3:5 "He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels."

  • THERE IS A BOOK

Daniel also spoke of seeing books opened. Moses referred to a book that God had written with names that could be blotted out. Malachi told of a book including place of birth beside names. The Psalmist said that God had a book detailing all his cries and prayers, his whole life record before he had even been born. Paul mentioned certain people whose names, he said, had been written in the Book of Life. And most importantly Jesus Christ pointedly said that the names of the disciples were written in heaven. With such a plethora of witnesses for the book, how could one argue against its existence? It would be like putting a hand out to stop a tidal wave from crashing ashore, an impossible and silly thing to do.

  • THE BOOK IS A SYMBOL

Nevertheless, it is difficult to imagine heaven needing a book. After all, when Jesus Christ gave us the Revelation, he did so through an angel who did not deliver a book to John but presented dramatic visions before John's eyes and told him that HE should write down what he had seen. The idea for a book therefore was the angel's for the sake of humanity, for us finite beings who read. But the angel himself did not need, use or arrive with one. How then did he know what to deliver except by complete understanding and sheer perfect memory so that he was able to create scenes that accurately depicted the message he was tasked to deliver. It was John's responsibility to write everything in his own book.

Those scenes reflected a world familiar to John, just as the visions and dreams of all the prophets before (given to and described by them) were according to the time and place, socio-economic and political culture of each. That is why they were "SEEING" books and thrones and august courts: not because there were those things in heaven, but because they were such in their own lives.

  • NOT BLOTTING OUT IS CONFESSING

In heaven, blotting out a name from the Book of Life is equivalent to not acknowledging that person. In other words, blotting out is the same as not confessing a name. They are not two different activities, but two turns of ONE phrase repeated for emphasis. "I will not blot out an overcomer's name," Jesus assured Smyrna. "but will confess it before heaven." I paraphrase. It is as if he is saying, "I will surely confess his name. I will not be ashamed of him. I will treat him as one of us in heaven."

  • FRIENDS HAVE NO NEED FOR A BOOK

Well, how do we know this for sure: that there is no book in heaven which God must read to know who to save? Here is how Isaiah (41:8-10) put it:

But you, Israel, are My servant,
    Jacob whom I have chosen,
The descendants of Abraham, My friend.
You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth,
And called from its farthest regions,
    And said to you,
    You are My servant,
I have chosen you and have not cast you away:
    Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
    I will strengthen you,
    Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

See? God called Abraham, "My friend." Of Enoch it is written, "And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him." Gen. 5:24 Enoch was another of God's friends, one whom God took to Himself. More tellingly Jesus warned, "Many will say to Me in that day: Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name? And then I will declare to them: I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!" Mat. 7:21-23 Are you God's friend right here, right now? Do you walk and talk with Him in this your time? Or are you just using His NAME to further your own ambitions?

  • GOD KNOWS WHO ARE HIS

Heaven begins now! Now is the time of your friendship with your Creator. Now, today, each and every moment, you partake of heaven's glorious light, beautiful music and comforting words. NOW! Jesus said, "But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him." John 4:23 And if you are God's and God is yours, then the sure promise is to you, "I will NEVER leave you, nor forsake you!" Heb. 13:5, Mat. 28:20, "and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen."

Paul cries out, "... the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: The Lord knows those who are His, and, Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity." 1 Tim. 2:19 And again, "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out: Abba, Father. The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs -- heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together." Rom. 8:14-17

  • SALVATION (ETERNAL LIFE) BEGINS NOW

Tell me, O faithless generation, does a father forget his own children? Does he say to them that unless their names are written down in his notepad, they cannot enter through the door, that he must check everytime to make sure? Does he not know them at once? "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!" -- Jesus Christ, Luke 11:13

First -- I agree that God does not need any type of books or records to remember anything. He KNOWS all things! He is everpresent -- past, present and future are all open to Him.

Second -- I agree that the word "books" or "scroll" are used to help clarify something to humans who kept records on "books" and "scrolls" -- but exactly what the heavenly data center is like we don't know. But the Bible is clear that records are being kept.

So -- while God does not need records for His own remembering, why does the Bible speak of books opened in scenes of judgment?
The answer was alluded to in the OP -- it's not for God's remembering, it's for the "sake of humanity,"
It's faithfully recorded to show men and angels that God's decisions were fully fair and just.
