There is a third option to having the cat poop in "food". That would be allowing the cat to get outdoors and find the proper facilities itself.

In theory, that would work. But, if you live in the city in an apartment complex, most of the time, they don't want your cats running around outside. Then you would have to put the cat on a leash. How many cats do you know of that would WILLINGLY be "leashed"? And then there is the strange dog factor. Sorry, I can't take my kitty outside. She needs to use the litter box.
