I noticed herbal medicine was mentioned in this topic. Does acupuncture's origin make acupuncture wrong? Does the origin of herbal medicine also make herbal medicine wrong? __________________________ Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Herbal medicine has been practiced from antiquity by all cultures of the world, not just the Chinese. The Bible makes references to the use of herbal remedies. It's not so much the origin of acupuncture that makes it wrong, it's what it's purpose is. But each person must decided for him/herself whether they want to use it, after they have researched it. Personally, I won't use it, anymore than I would the Indian practice of Kundalini, which is analogous of the chi. Both are for the purpose of realigning an inner essence, something the Bible never refers to. ------------------ Jesus is the joy of living _________________________ Linda

Hello,
Thank you for such comprehensive information on chinese philosophy, medicine, and martial arts. It was just what is needed in our home at the moment. My seven year old is avidly interested in martial arts and constantly pestering to study karate or judo. I have been looking for outlets for physical exercise but was not comfortable with exposing him to the underlying philosophy. It seems to me in the case of martial arts, that spending your time and money learning to fight with techniques that potentially injure or kill others, no matter how responsibly taught, is contrary to our purpose as Christians. elf

elf, I agree with you about the martial arts. But for some reason I looked at that as a defense mechanism rather than trying to fight.
I have a friend who enrolled her girls so that they might have some kind of defense should they be attacked. I wasn't sure what to think about it.
I just know that because of the attached philosophy as you said, I did not let my children go into any martial arts. But I've always had a question in my mind about it--is it possible to learn these techniques without all the religious junk that goes with it?
Wouldn't it depend on the teacher?

Sure it's possible -- police departments do it all the time. So does the military.

So is it morally right for us as christians to study self defense? Should we be depending on the protection of our angels or do we have a responsibility to protect ourselves? elf

John, are you saying the police and military learn the martial arts without all the religious stuff that goes with it?
elf, I can't answer your question if this makes martial arts okay in the line of self defense but I was always taught as a girl that when we pray for God's protection, we do all we can to answer that prayer. In other words, we don't ask His protection and then jump out of a plane or something else that would be just plain stupid.
If it were possible to learn martial arts as a line of defense only, I might be interested. Yet at the same time, aren't we suppose to turn the other cheek?
Does Mrs. White say anything about this or the Bible?

I think I see a side topic brewing, therefore, I am going to create a new topic on Self-Defence in the Christian Living forum.
