New President in the States on his first day in office
gives Canada (especially Alberta) a SERIOUS economical blow.
Liberal Canadian Leader makes no protest.

Live Emergency Debate
Canada facing a Crises

Alberta is an oil producing province.
It is also very dedicated to restore all natural areas -- MUCH MORE than any other resource dependent country. Alberta is committed to reducing its footprint, already planning the restoration before starting a project.
Also the "oil sands" are a very SMALL part of the oil industry.
Our economy was already in big trouble five years ago due to climate activists in OTHER COUNTRIES trying to kill our economy. Covid-19 already put another huge dent in our economy. Now this? Cancelling this hope?

Alberta gives millions of dollars to HELP other province.
They are the only province in Canada that receives ZERO funds from other provinces.
Why are they killing Alberta????

This is more serious than most outsiders realize.

Do people really want to stop the consumption of energy?
It's very cold here -25 decrees here. That's MINUS 25 degrees. Anyone want to turn off their furnaces, and walk everywhere?

I stopped watching the "emergency debate" when the third MP in a row, Elizabeth May, thought focusing on a point of order, the logo written on a member?s covid mask, was the best way to help Alberta survive the loss of the Keystone pipeline!

I am an informed, enthusiastic, voter and fond of dragging reluctant folks to the polling station every four years. I will probably not bother voting next time...

It is pretty long -- they were at it for five hours. I listened to a lot of it while working at other things.
A lot of the western MP's gave good speeches showing the reality facing the people and the country, and stressing the prime minister aught to talk to Biden, and start doing something for the west. Some of the others were in French and I couldn't understand. Some were all on the "climate change" wagon basically saying people need to stop using oil, not expand the oil industry, there's no need for a pipeline because the climate change program will make oil unnecessary.
Some of the eastern MP's kept talking about Biden made an election promise and we can't expect him to break that promise. Other's booed that talk citing all the election promises broken by leaders.

Others mentioned that people will continue to use oil, as it is a commodity that isn't just used to fuel cars, it is used in a large variety of ways. If people don't buy our oil, they'll get it from Venezuela, or some other country that isn't anywhere near as advanced in climate standards or as careful processing the fuel with lower emissions, and restoring the land. Blocking the pipeline won't help climate change.

Did they come up with "help" for the multiple thousands in Alberta who are now unemployed?

Thousands lost their jobs, and quite a few smaller oil businesses closed for good, when oil prices drastically dropped about a decade ago. It was suddenly quite a normal sight to see groups of those "nodding donkey" oil pumps, stand motionless in many places. Once upon a time they were all nodding up and down.
Then thousands more lost their jobs when Covid -19 came.
Many who lost those jobs, have nothing to come back to when covid goes away.
And now when it seems nothing could get worse -- it gets worse and thousands more lose their jobs

There was only one main suggestion as to how to meet this crises
---- they suggested "retraining" all those workers for different work.
--- Diversifying the economy (not having oil and gas as the main economic resource) Also get in on new energy projects that don't affect the climate.
--- They talked about all the laws that make it hard to start a new business, and would like to see many of those laws rescinded to make it easier for people to start a business and then employ others.

Others countered saying a lot of these people in the oil business don't live in the big cities, and the
opportunities to use their line of skill in some other jobs are unlikely out in the country.

Nothing was really accomplished. It was more a matter of Alberta, Sask, being able to voice their needs and hoping that they might be heard.

Thank you for the synopsis. As an Albertan and a former oil industry employee, I am disgusted by our politicians. Given the global Great Reset that is well underway, I am highly sceptical that any workers will receive much help in being retrained, except possibly as Walmart greeters, covid contact tracer agents, or fast food minimum wagers! Biden is a lost cause of course. I don?t suppose any of these "concerned" politicians suggested putting some pressure on Quebec, so an eastern pipeline can be built, and Canada can stop the ludicrous practice of importing bulk oil from racist, misogynistic, middle eastern polluters?

Actually that did come up in the discussions-- an eastern pipeline Suggested by western MP's, but I didn't hear much encouragement from the east.
