We have some key issues that we find in scripture that cause the Jewish leaders to seek the death of Jesus, and the animosity of having been called to repent and change from their wickedness and reprobate minds by what they saw as an uneducated by their standards and simple carpenter. We find them in the story of a man healed at the Pool of Bethesda..

1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, [a]Bethesda, having five porches. 3 In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, [b]paralyzed, [c]waiting for the moving of the water. 4 For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. 5 Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, 'Do you want to be made well?'

7 The sick man answered Him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me."
8 Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your bed and walk." 9 And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked.
And that day was the Sabbath. 10 The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, "It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed."
11 He answered them, "He who made me well said to me, 'Take up your bed and walk.'"
12 Then they asked him, "Who is the Man who said to you, 'Take up your bed and walk'" 13 But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you."
15 The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
16 For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, [d]and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I have been working."
18 Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.

These were some of the key reasons given in to us by scripture...

1. Breaking the Sabbath
The fourth commandment demanded rest on the seventh day (Exodus 20:8-11).
Over time, layers of rabbinic tradition had accumulated, defining even compassionate acts of healing as 'work.'
By telling the healed man to carry his mat, Jesus openly challenged those traditions (cf. Mark 3:1-6; Luke 13:10-17).
Jesus repeatedly testified that He is 'Lord of the Sabbath' (Matthew 12:8), asserting His right to define true Sabbath rest.

2. Claiming equality with God
The text says Jesus was 'calling God His own Father 'an exclusive, familial claim.
The leaders recognized that such language placed Jesus on equal footing with God Himself, an offense they labeled blasphemy (Leviticus 24:16).
Similar outrage surfaces later: 'You, a mere man, claim to be God' (John 10:33).

Why these charges mattered so much to them
Their understanding of holiness saw any perceived Sabbath violation as rebellion against God?s Law.
Their view of monotheism could not conceive of the Eternal sharing His glory with anyone else (Isaiah 42:8).
For them, the combination of Sabbath violation and claimed divinity justified the death penalty, as their law prescribed for blasphemers.

The SOP gives us more.. "Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.? Mark 1:14, 15.

The Messiah's coming had been first announced in Judea. In the temple at Jerusalem the birth of the forerunner had been foretold to Zacharias as he ministered before the altar. On the hills of Bethlehem the angels had proclaimed the birth of Jesus. To Jerusalem the magi had come in search of Him. In the temple Simeon and Anna had testified to His divinity. ?Jerusalem, and all Judea? had listened to the preaching of John the Baptist; and the deputation from the Sanhedrin, with the multitude, had heard his testimony concerning Jesus. In Judea, Christ had received His first disciples. Here much of His early ministry had been spent. The flashing forth of His divinity in the cleansing of the temple, His miracles of healing, and the lessons of divine truth that fell from His lips, all proclaimed that which after the healing at Bethesda He had declared before the Sanhedrin,?His Sonship to the Eternal.

If the leaders in Israel had received Christ, He would have honored them as His messengers to carry the gospel to the world. To them first was given the opportunity to become heralds of the kingdom and grace of God. But Israel knew not the time of her visitation. The jealousy and distrust of the Jewish leaders had ripened into open hatred, and the hearts of the people were turned away from Jesus.

The Sanhedrin had rejected Christ's message and was bent upon His death; therefore Jesus departed from Jerusalem, from the priests, the temple, the religious leaders, the people who had been instructed in the law, and turned to another class to proclaim His message, and to gather out those who should carry the gospel to all nations..." (The Desire of Ages, page 231)

So its clear they sought to usurp the authority of God and His Law with their oral traditions and impose their substitute view of the Sabbath and the Law much as we see the reiteration by the church of Rome when it brought and continues to brings its 'tradition' to again usurp God and His Law.

As to the destruction of Jerusalem, we have seen that it was false ideas of the Sabbath, set against the true, that caused the nation of the Jews to reject, to persecute, and to seek to kill Jesus, and that it was this rejection of Him that caused that destruction. They rejected and slew Him, lest the Romans should come and take away both their place and nation; and their rejection and slaying of Him resulted in the Romans coming and taking away both their place and nation. Their rejection of the Sabbath of the Lord, and in that rejection, the rejection of Him who was and is the Lord of the Sabbath, caused the ruin of that nation.

Yes, they wanted to have the "dominion" in their own hands. Christ came proclaiming, "The kingdom of heaven is at hand". The authority of God and His Law is to be implanted in hearts and souls in a kingdom motivated by God's love, where people are citizen's of a heavenly dominion.

The ruling class could sense their whole official position would no longer be needed! No more need for a high priest, Christ would now be their High Priest, no more sanctuary services with it's sacrifices and multitude of rituals, for Christ was the Passover Lamb, the all sufficient sacrifice. In their day, the priests were the ruling class. They had considerable authority over the people. They were the teachers and instructors of the people. They felt they were the judges of the people, knowing who was in God's favor and who was not.

They profited from their corruption turning the needy from their right, and obscuring God's love for the poor. The love of God was concealed from sinners, and men made merchandise of God's grace.
What they wanted was a king who would acknowledge and elevate their power, remove the Romans and let them (the priestly, authoritive class) handle the people. They could see that if Christ had His way their whole priestly privileges, position' and authority would be replaced.

They havent changed, when the side of our family that is Jewish, goes to the synagogue, the Rabbi just says 'Here is what you have to pay for temple'. No offering or tithe, just payment, and it all is based on how much you make or have, and it can run into the millions for those with money.
