Do you own one or more horses or some raise chickens for your own eggs? Have you any concern for the religious freedom of others? If you reside in the USA and answer yes to either of the above questions, you may wish to read this article featured in Countryside Mag. by Mary Zanoni on the The National Animal Identification System. See below for site and to read the whole article. I have just given a few quotes from article. The National Animal Identification System: A new threat to rural freedom? By Mary Zanoni, Ph.D., J.D. Perhaps the most troubling aspect of the NAIS is its proponents' lack of concern for individual privacy and religious freedom. Consider that the NAIS plan is a compulsory registration with the government of all people who want to raise their own animal foods. Fall 2007-the USDA plans to publish a "final rule" to establish the requirements of the mandatory NAIS. (Plan, p. 10.) January 2008-this is the most crucial date in the USDA's present timetable, the date when premises identification and animal identification would become mandatory. (Plan, pp. 2, 10.) January 2009-"animal tracking" would become mandatory, including "enforcement" of the reporting of animal movements. (Plan, p. 17.) What do you think about this law? Is it a good thing? Do you see it effecting any freedom's? Does Canada have anything law that is similar?

I can see a reason for it, if people are doing this as a business, but not if they are doing this for their own personal consumption.
I am not aware of anything like this happening here in Canada.

It would be interesting to find more info on this. We all know the day is coming that we will begin to lose our freedoms But.... remains to see if this is true, exaggerated,or spun in such a way that it does not reflect the real bill at all.
I had no intention of commenting further on the topic of animal rights/abuse etc. But I would like to see more of this if available. Has anyone any idea of the sheer scope of this and the inability to enforce??
One of the reasons I get real suspicious over animal stories is because of the story of supposed animal abuse in the "Pig Farmer" in the Animal abuse topic. I had not planned on saying anymore there either but will add a bit more to that. Common sense should rule but when a animal rights gets into a story it is absent. If they need to lie to gain a convert they will,in their opinion the end justifys the means. In one on one conversations they will willingly admit to that Recently worked with a woman that was an active member of Peta. She frankly told me that if she were to ever come across a burning building and had to choose between a trapped dog and a trapped child she couldn't honestly say what she would choose.

I would think that any animal being sold as human food should be tracked from birth to butcher. This makes it much easier to find the source of Mad Cow, bovine TB, feed contamination etc.

I am sure you are right, but the logistics of that in the US would be almost overwhelming.
I live in a rural area, and just locally there are hundred's of people with a animal or two for personal consumption
Can"t even imagine the work with poultry.
Every spring you can hear the peep's from the little guys at our PO, literally hundred's go thru our small town PO in the spring Bonnie

You're right Bonnie it would be hard. I just don't see it happening with chickens, or the person wanting to raise and slaughter his own cows, hogs or gators. But there needs to be some way of tracking diseased animals so stop an epidemic before it becomes one. Just wait until they want to put ID's on honey bees, 60,000 per hive Redfog
