Thanks for the helpful post, Ed. My back problems don't result from age or strenuous activity - I don't think so anyway. It's usually just that towards the end of the day, after all the sitting around I have to do, my back is really sore. I was hoping that developing better back muscles would help me to maintain a healthy posture without getting sore. I also try to frequently re-adjust my position and take breaks where I stand up and walk around. I'm probably younger than everyone else here (16), but I want to make health and fitness habitual while I'm still young. I figure this sure beats wasting my youth, and then getting into health practices when I'm old, fat, and on the verge of a stroke or heart attack. As you've mentioned "inspiration," I can indeed say that the "Ministry of Healing" book has been invaluable to me. I visited the Bill Pearl website a long time ago, while first looking for information on BB. I like the fact that he's a natural bodybuilder, as many (or most) of the others use drugs and such things. I've also noticed that there seems to be more emphasis on how good bodybuilding can make someone look, rather than how good they feel (elsewhere). That's probably why people are willing to trash their health with drugs. I did a search on shopping.com and found an "exercise ball," like you mentioned: http://www.rei.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prmenbr=8000&prrfnbr=2601215 Is this what you were talking about? I don't know if my mother would take me to see a doctor, as I don't think I have back injuries - just a weak back. Most of my health problems are either hereditary or result from sedentary habits (I'm an intellectual, artistic type, not highly physical). I'll try to figure out a way to implement the exercises you've suggested into a routine. Only one thing you said puzzled me - what is the definition of "failure," and how would I find what it is for me? [This message has been edited by Tony Mantara (edited April 11, 2001).]

Tony Hi, Great link on the exercise ball & cheap too . That's just what I had in mind. I bookmarked it. Training to failure in a set or as a workout is training until you just can't do another complete repetition any more for a specific exercise, or most or all exercises in a workout. The resistance or weight you select and your present energy levels, strength, endurance, and rest time between sets & reps & exercises determine training to failure. When one more rep is impossible you have trained to failure. Your balance of recuperation capacities and strength have failed. Now your reserves are temporarily tapped out & your going to have to rebuild your energy reserves before you can grow stronger. Training to 70-80% of any given day's present abilities is sufficient to build up with. Too often the endorphin rush and or ego get caught up in training and you hit your personal wall for that day. You have done 20-30% too much and have delayed your recuperation and growth until recovery of energy levels take place. Also the closer to failure the closer to injury. They are bummers, you loose all you built while waiting to heal, may have chronic damage, and can & often build up arthritis & joint damage in mid life . Body building can be good for you or and ego trip and chronic impediments (even if small.) Ego is a bad training partner. Food will be as important as equipment & working out. Gerry asked about gluten steaks as a homemade meat substitute. Look over in the Forum (Healthy Diet & Recipes) & thread (Vegan recipes)for the various homemade recipes for meat substitutes . ------------------ Edward F Sutton [This message has been edited by Edward F Sutton (edited April 13, 2001).]

I did a little research and found that meat consumption was not the best source of pretein for body building. It saps the body of needed nutrients (such as calcium, potassium, phosphorus) in order for the body to utilize the protein in it. Ad to that the uric acid you get from meat, and it is a recipe for failure and disaster. Another reason to stop eating meat.

Tony, Hi I just ordered online the exercise ball & video from the URL you posted. Hope to start using it soon. Thanks, Ed. Time to go to the basement and keep working on my exercise goals. I wish there was more room & a taller workout space. ------------------ Edward F Sutton
