Hi everyone.
I have just been accepted by the Australian based "Christian Services for the Blind," as a volunteer reader. It involves reading books and recording them on audio cassettes to be used for their free lending library for the visualy impaired and those who experience difficulty in reading books because of physical disabilities. It is a wonderful service which I feel honoured to be a part of.
All recordings by various volunteer readers to date have been done by recording directly onto cassette through their cassette recorders. However, when I read the posts on media capture using a computer and programs that enable it I decided to experiment.
I downloaded the highly recommended GoldWave for trial and was so impressed with its capabiities for editing that I purchased it. I then did my first test reading, burnt it onto CD, recorded off that onto audio cassette, and posted it to Christian Services for the Blind for assessment. The reply has just come back that they "would be happy for you to seriously be involved in narrating for the CDFBHI Library."
An observation was made however that "The volume on the cassette recording whilst quite audible is rather low/soft. That means that if I boost it on the copy machine, it would also boost any background noise, hiss or hum, so if you would raise the volume it would be just fine." This I found to be so when I played it on my own CD player or cassette player and needed to turn the volume up way above the normal level.
I had increased the recording level on GoldWave to maximum before doing the mentioned recording. I have since purchased a TalkPro Express cardioid microphone to see if that would improve things but although it blocked out all, and I mean all, background noise, it also made a recording even quieter than the first.
Is there anyone who can help me to increase the volume level of the recordings so that it can be listened to without having to boost copying levels or output volume levels? Perhaps somehow using other equipment to boost it on the way in or software that enhances it once recorded etc.
It is pioneering work in a sense because it will enable those who have CD players or CDRoms to have access to the blessed messages in the Spirit of Prohecy and other uplifting literature. It will also enable me to edit out pops, missreadings, pauses etc that are inherant in recordings already available. Exciting stuff!!
Awaiting your replies so the blessed Lord's work can progress in this area; ZBaldeagle.
