That's a good practice, Scott. If you praise people publicly, but offer constructive criticism privately, they'll respect you.
Waggoner has a wonderful thing where he talks about this in the book "The Everlasting Covenant." It doesn't look like this book is online.
I re-read it, but it didn't say what I was hoping to find. The idea is that friends share mutual confidences, and is we confide in the Lord, He will keep our confidences, and, in fact, the only way we can keep our sins a secret is to allow Him to bring them to our attention and heal us from them. So if we trust in the Lord, and share our secrets with Him, they will remain secret, but if we don't, they will come out and become known to all.
Anyway, your idea about not criticizing your employees in public made me think of this.
Those who wait for the Bridegroom's coming are to say to the people, "Behold your God." The last rays of merciful light, the last message of mercy to be given to the world, is a revelation of His character of love.
