The way this is worded makes me think you are arguing that the fire that burned Sodom is eternal fire.
Mike,
I am not the one saying that...the Bible is saying that. God is a fire. There are several texts in scripture to establish this.
You will "put out" God's fire? How? It is eternal, everlasting, and forever, just as God is Himself, for God IS fire.
Would you "put out" love? Does God not "love" the people of Sodom anymore? God IS love. Love is a part of God Himself, and is just as eternal as the fire.
"I am the LORD, I change not..." Malachi 3:6
The fire never goes out. But anything unclean will be consumed by it, and vanish--it will not keep burning eternally. Those of us who are righteous, can "dwell with everlasting burnings" (Isaiah 33:14) and "not be burned" (Isaiah 43:2).
Blessings,
Green Cochoa.
