stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek:
and his rest shall be glorious. {glorious: Heb. glory}

The above passage was likely never fulfilled. The promise that the Gentiles will be gathered in was partly fulfilled in the New Testament church but the main fulfillment seems to be future.

It's in Isaiah 11.

as far as egypt goes, when i read isaiah, or most of the ot prophets, i read it in context with ot history. the israelites were not to attack egypt because egypt had taken them in. it didnt seem like there ever came a time when israel was to go after egypt.

i noticed that because i had been "trained" to believe God went after people who worshipped idols, yet here were egypt, edom, moab, and ammon who were to be left alone, who were into idolatry. it seemed that God had certain criteria He went by, which wasnt necessarily dependent on whether the nations were worshipping idols or not.

but like i said that was what my study was based on. not about future or dual aps, which seems to be where you are heading. smile

Mark, wasn't Isaiah's prophecy originally supposed to be fulfilled by post-exilic Israel? "And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people . . ." (verse 11) The first time was when God recovered them from Egypt and the second time was when He recovered them everywhere and reestablished them in Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple destroyed by Babylon.

Not just a remnant, but the whole nation was 'redeemed'/delivered from Egypt. If that was the case, then the first recovery of only a remnant is not from Egypt but from Babylon. So, the second recovery is at the end when God calls spiritual Israel out of Babylon again. But the call is not only to those in Babylon, it's also to those in spiritual Egypt, atheism, and it's also to those in spiritual Assyria. These calls are linked in prophecy to last day events, the clearest of them being the latter rain spoken of by Joel and Zechariah:
Quote:
10:1 Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; [so] the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field. ... 10:3 Mine anger was kindled against the shepherds, and I punished the goats: for the LORD of hosts hath visited his flock the house of Judah, and hath made them as his goodly horse in the battle. [This 'goodly horse' appears to be a reference to the white horse of Revelation 6 which according to the pioneers represented the conquering power of the gospel under the early rain. Ellen White says there is a future application to this passage. In my view it will be re-fulfilled when the latter rain is poured out.]
10:4 Out of him came forth the corner, out of him the nail, out of him the battle bow, out of him every oppressor together.
10:5 And they shall be as mighty [men], which tread down [their enemies] in the mire of the streets in the battle: and they shall fight, because the LORD [is] with them, and the riders on horses shall be confounded.
10:6 And I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them again to place them; for I have mercy upon them: and they shall be as though I had not cast them off: for I [am] the LORD their God, and will hear them. . . .
10:8 I will hiss for them, and gather them; for I have redeemed them: and they shall increase as they have increased.
10:9 And I will sow them among the people: and they shall remember me in far countries; and they shall live with their children, and turn again.

10:10 I will bring them again also out of the land of Egypt, and gather them out of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon; and [place] shall not be found for them.
10:11 And he shall pass through the sea with affliction, and shall smite the waves in the sea, and all the deeps of the river shall dry up: and the pride of Assyria shall be brought down, and the sceptre of Egypt shall depart away. 10:12 And I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the LORD. . . .
13:8 And it shall come to pass, [that] in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off [and] die; but the third shall be left therein.
13:9 And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It [is] my people: and they shall say, The LORD [is] my God.

According to the above passage, the final judgment of spiritual Egypt and Assyria, like the final judgment of spiritual Babylon, is at the end, at the time of the latter rain. If you read on in Zechariah this is the time that all nations will marshal their forces to fight spiritually and physically against spiritual Israel. We know from Revelation 14 that the gospel at this time will go to every nation. Does anyone think that the gospel will make its way in the world without determined opposition? These passages are in scripture as an assurance of success to the final generation whole give the gospel message.
Quote:

and the pride of Assyria shall be brought down, and the sceptre of Egypt shall depart away.

Just as Babylon will be judged for rejecting the gospel and deceiving the nations, spiritual Assyria and Egypt will also be defeated by the gospel that offers not only forgiveness for sin, but deliverence from sin through 'The Lord our Righteousness.'

Mark, Thanks for sharing this great Bible passage in the Forum.

Yes, it does seems that it applies to the end time. Something to note here, it's talking about the "third part". In Revelation 8, describing the trumpets, there's a lot of "third part" references in it. Then at the 6th trumpet in Rev 9:15 a third of mankind was killed. Could it be that at the end time, there will be 2/3 of the population that will be cut off, and the other third redeemed? If this is how it is to be understood, then there's going to be a huge harvest!
