Weight Loss Tips
"Eating a generous meal early in the day signals your body to produce more of the appetite-suppressing hormone leptin," according to medical anthropologist Meg Jordan, PhD., RN., author of the booK Making Waves. "And that amplified production of leptin checks cravings and hunger pangs for up to 24 hours." This, according to University of Minnesota researchers, can mean a one-pound-per-week weight loss. --adapted from First, for women on the go, Sept. 1, 2003.

Lose Weight With Fiber
The benefit of a high fiber diet is that you can eat less and feel fuller. Weight loss is another benefit. Tufts University researchers reviewed data on fiber and found that those who ate an extra 14 grams of fiber daily cut their calorie intake by about 10 percent. And those who added 12 grams lost about a pound per month. "Fiber can help with weight loss because it increases the sensation of fullness and influences the hormones that regulate food intake," according to the study's co-author Edward Saltzman.
How much fiber should we be getting each day? The American Heart Association recommends 25 to 30 grams daily. However, many are getting just half that amount. Whole grains fruits and veggies and legumes fill the bill nicely and should constitute a major part of our diets. --adapted from The Reader's Digest, May 2003.

Recipe for Obesity
Here is an adaptation of a letter to the editor of U.S News & World Report, Nov. 11, 2002:
In our search for the reason so many folks are overweight or obese, let us not forget the fact that we are eating meat from animals that are fed or injected with growth hormones. This is a practice used by growers to get livestock to market more quickly, thereby shortening the time needed to feed them in the fattening pens and reducing the cost of feed.
Since it works for livestock, does not the residue within the meat also "fatten" those who consume the products containing these growth hormones? Indeed, it works for beef, pork, turkey, chicken and other animal meats, and also works for people. Combined with the fact that so many are "pigging-out" on junk- and fast-food, "supersize" restaurant portions, etc., is it any wonder that obesity has become a national epidemic? --signed
Brothers and sisters, obesity is indeed a problem in and out of the church. By the grace and help of the Lord we can gain the victory in this important area.
"I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." Philippians 4:13.

More Weight loss Tips - from Prevention, magazine.
* Fiber is nature's weight loss winner. One study showed that subjects who dieted and also took a fiber supplement of 7 grams daily, lost nearly double the amount of weight as those who only dieted. And they were also less hungry.
* And don't forget to exercise. Indeed for weight loss, exercise and veggies, rule. And veggies for the most part offer valuable fiber.
* Some medicines are notorious for causing weight gain. These include many antidepressants.
* A secret to weight loss is boosting metabolism. Regular exercise not only burns calories during the exercise but increases metabolism and burns more calories all the time, even at rest. Remember, increasing metabolism does much to help you keep the weight off for good.
* Many experts say the only right way to lose weight permanently is to change lifestyle factors--eating, exercise, stress reduction, etc.
* Case histoy: Lost 100 lbs., was heavy steak and ice cream eater....Learned to love veggies.
* Fat is the worst offender--the fat you eat is the fat you wear.
* Walking makes one thinner all over...Striking loss of fat from the arms in both walkers and cyclist after 6 months. Also works on jelly bellies and thunder thighs.
* For weight loss, eat vegetables, vegetables, vegetables.
* Start exercising and eating a correct diet now; cut down on fatty, junk foods before that spare tire runs over you.
* The number 1 appetite control switch: lots of water; quells appetite. Many think they're hungry when in fact they're thirsty!
* Fats and sweets are a deadly combination. Each by itself heightens appetite, but combined, they shift appetite into overdrive. Sugar combined with fat, ie. chocolate bar, ice cream and soda overstimulates insulin production.
* Those who are really serious about losing weight, stop eating between meals and increase their water intake.
* Losing 5 pounds can do more for a person's mood and self-esteem than 6 months of counseling.
* And don't forget to ask the Lord to lead and guide as you embark on your weight loss program. I'm praying for you.

Rev Your Metabolism With Water
From cabbage soup to South Beach, popular diets agree on one thing: Water helps weight loss. Indeed, researchers in Germany measured the resting metabolism of volunteers before and after they drank just over 16 ounces of water. Within 10 minutes, metabolism began to rise. After 40 minutes, the groups' average calorie-burning rate was 30% higher, and stayed elevated for over an hour.
The researchers don't quite understand why, but calculate that drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily--the generally recommended amount--can bun off almost 35,000 calories a year, or about 10 pounds. --adapted from Prevention, August 2004.
Comment: Metabolism, of course, is the rate at which the body burns calories. Eating a good breakfast and getting an adequate amount of exercise also speeds up the metabolism.

A Hunger Buster!
A peppermint plant may be the cheapest hunger buster ever. Those who sniffed peppermint throughout the day consumed nearly 3,200 fewer calories a week in a recent study. You can take a whiff before exercising to perk up for a workout too.--Prevention, Sept. 2009.
Comment: Peppermint oil is also available and may work equally as well.

The Worst Kind of Calories
If you're trying to drop a few pounds, here's one of the most important dietary changes to make: Put down that sugar-sweetened beverage.
Calories from solid foods and liquids both add up, of course. But in one multicenter study, the only menu change that had a significant payoff for dieters was cutting back on sugary beverages, according to lead author Benjamin Caballero, MD.
Reducing intake by just one serving a day took a pound off after 6 months, enough to add up for people with a soda or fruit-drink habit.
Why do sugary drinks weigh heaviest? Your body doesn't seem to register liquid calories as accurately as those from solid foods, the researchers say, so you don't throttle back on consumption. --Readers Digest, July 2009.

Fight 'Fatso' Gene with Exercise
One hour of moderate to vigorous exercise a day can help teens beat the effects of a common obesity-related gene with the nickname "fatso," according to a new European study. The message for adolescents is to get moving, said lead author Jonathan Ruiz of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. --Los Angeles Times, April 6, 2010.
Indeed, ALL are advised to be active in their own way: brisk walking, bicycling, jogging, the gym, or whatever... you've got to do something!

Cash Rewards for Weight Loss
Research indicates that dieters given a financial incentive to lose weigh are nearly 5 times more likely to meet their goal when compared with dieters who have no potential monetary reward. That's why companies, in an effort to cut overall health care costs have started offering everything from gift cards to cruises to employees who shed excess pounds.
And the trend is now exending to the genral public as a new websiye HealthyWage.com teams with corporate sponsors to give cash prizes to obese participants who lose enough weight in a year. Members can sign up for free (according to a company rep, Jan 20, 2010 is the last day to enter the 2010 challenge) and win $100, or up the stakes to $1,000 by putting $300 of their own money on the line. Healthy Wage refers to this as super-sizing, and it's the one instance in which such an option might actually be good for you. --Time January 18, 2010.
Comment: The time limit for this has, of course, past, but perhaps others can start such a program. Indeed, whatever works....

Sobering New Research
Rev up the treadmill: Sobering new research spells out just how much exercise women need to keep the flab off as they age--and it's a lot. Indeed, at least an hour of moderate activity a day is needed for older women at a healthy weight who aren't dieting. For those who are already overweight--and that's most American women--even more exercise is called for to avoid gaining weight without eating less, study results show.
"We all have to work at it. If it were easy to be skinny, we would all be skinny," said John Foreyt, a behavioral medicine expert who reviewed the study but was not involved in the research. Brisk walking, leisurely bicycling and golfing are all examples of moderate exercise. But don't throw in the towel if you can't do those things for at least an hour a day. Even a little exercise is good for your health even if it won't make you thin, the researchers said.
Their findings are based on over 34,000 nondieting middle-aged women followed for about 13 years. The women gained an average of almost 6 pounds during the study. Those who started out at a healthy weight, with a body mass index less than 25, and who gained little or no weight during the study consistently got the equivalent of about an hour of moderate activity daily. Few women--only 13%--were in this catagory.
Few already overweight women got that amount of exercise, and the results suggest it wasn't enough to stop them from gaining weight. These results echo what gym-fuls of middle-aged American women see every time they step off the treadmill and onto the scale.
The study appeared in the March 23, 2010 Journal of the American Medical Association. Only women were studied, hence the researachers from Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital said it's uncertain whether the results would apply to men. --Press-Enterprise, March 24, 2010.
Comment: We all know that those who are really serious about losing weight must diet as well as exercise to accomplish this feat. Of course, it's not easy....Many find that cutting down on portion size across the board goes a long way in aiding in the weight loss game.
