1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Forgiveness can have more meanings than what we commonly understand as letting go of resentment and anger, it also includes restoration of trustworthiness and this is what God promises when He promises to forgive us.
