In Testimonies , vol.5,p.212, we read--

The day of God's vengeance is just upon us. The seal of God will be placed upon the foreheads of those only who sigh and cry for the abominations done in the land. Those who link in sympathy with the world are eating and drinking with the drunken and will surely be destroyed with the workers of iniquity. "The eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and His ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil." {5T 212.3}

If ONLY those of us who sigh and cry for the abominations done in the church are to be sealed--what are these "abominations"? Does any have some ideas?

I would say we need to know about them because of it's supreme importance.

"who sigh and cry for the abominations done in the land."

Quote:
"And He showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. And the Lord said unto Satan, The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan; even the Lord that hast chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee; is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments and stood before the angel" (Zechariah 3:1-3). Joshua here represents the people of God; and Satan pointing to their filthy garments claims them as his property over which he has a right to exercise his cruel power. But these very ones have improved the hours of probation to confess their sins with contrition of soul and put them away, and Jesus has written pardon against their names. {4MR 249.3}

Those who have not ceased to sin and who have not repented and sought pardon for their transgressions are not represented in this company; for this company vex their souls over the corruptions and iniquity abounding around them, and God will recognize those who are sighing and crying because of the abominations done in the land. They were not mixed up in these abominations. They had not corrupted their ways before God, but had washed their robes of character and had made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Satan pointed to their sins which had not yet been blotted out, and which he had tempted them to commit, and then reviled them as being sinners clad with filthy garments. But Jesus changes their appearance. He says, "Take away his filthy garments from him." "Behold I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment, and I said, let him set a fair mitre upon his head. So they set a fair mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments." {4MR 250.1}

In the time of the end the people of God will sigh and cry for the abominations done in the land. With tears they will warn the wicked of their danger in trampling upon the divine law, and with unutterable sorrow they will humble themselves before the Lord in penitence. The wicked will mock their sorrow and ridicule their solemn appeals. But the anguish and humiliation of God's people is unmistakable evidence that they are regaining the strength and nobility of character lost in consequence of sin. It is because they are drawing nearer to Christ, because their eyes are fixed on His perfect purity, that they discern so clearly the exceeding sinfulness of sin. Meekness and lowliness are the conditions of success and victory. A crown of glory awaits those who bow at the foot of the cross. {PK 590.2}

who "sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done" in the church."

Quote:
Our physicians are to stand where no binding influence will hold them speechless when they hear wrong sentiments expressed. At times, with burning earnestness and words of terrible severity, Christ denounced the abominations that He saw in the church and in the world. He would not allow the people to be deceived by false claims to righteousness and sanctity. {SpTB02 47.1}

Who are standing in the counsel of God at this time? Is it those who virtually excuse wrongs among the professed people of God and who murmur in their hearts, if not openly, against those who would reprove sin? Is it those who take their stand against them and sympathize with those who commit wrong? No, indeed! Unless they repent, and leave the work of Satan in oppressing those who have the burden of the work and in holding up the hands of sinners in Zion, they will never receive the mark of God's sealing approval. They will fall in the general destruction of the wicked, represented by the work of the five men bearing slaughter weapons. Mark this point with care: Those who receive the pure mark of truth, wrought in them by the power of the Holy Ghost, represented by a mark by the man in linen, are those "that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done" in the church. Their love for purity and the honor and glory of God is such, and they have so clear a view of the exceeding sinfulness of sin, that they are represented as being in agony, even sighing and crying. Read the ninth chapter of Ezekiel. {3T 267.1}

The word "abominations" is all inclusive. Paul's list of abominations is pretty comprehensive:

Romans
1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
1:30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
1:31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
1:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Galatians
5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are [these]; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told [you] in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Those who are sealed are the ones who have surrendered their lives to Christ, and follow His leading. They "follow the Lamb".

We are not saved or sealed by the amount of abominations we can find in the church and proclaim to the world.
There is plenty of sinning going on, but if that becomes our main focus, we will rise no higher than what we behold.

"BY BEHOLDING WE BECOME CHANGED"

The result of beholding Christ ==
2 Cor. 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

The result of focusing on abominations

"The very act of looking for evil in others develops evil in those who look. By dwelling upon the faults of others, we are changed into the same image. But by beholding Jesus, talking of His love and perfection of character, we become changed into His image. By contemplating the lofty ideal He has placed before us, we shall be uplifted into a pure and holy atmosphere, even the presence of God. When we abide here, there goes forth from us a light that irradiates all who are connected with us. {GW 479.2}

So what does the text --
sighing and crying for the abominations done in the land (or church) mean?

It does NOT mean going out and digging up all the abominations we can find. You'll find yourself digging into a bottomless pit of evil which does NO ONE any good and only desensitizes the soul to it's evil, and produces self righteousness. (After all, the person digging up the evil thinks -- I don't do those things)

Our salvation is in Christ, and the closer we come to Him and His righteousness, the more sin becomes repulsive. The closer we come to Christ, the more also that we see some of these "abominations" in ourselves, and plead with the Lord for strength to remove them.

We don't need to go out digging to find "abominations" enough to break our hearts, they will be painfully obvious already.

Our sighing and crying is not that of the critic who seeks out the faults of others, but of the person who senses genuine pain by the rejection of Christ and His righteousness that is obvious around them.

The sighing is that of the person pleading with God to help people find true righteousness and pleading that their own lives may be such to bring glory and honor to God's name and be a witness for good to those around them.

Yes, sin is the abominations in the land.
Is the sin painful to one's senses,
Or is it pleasant and beckoning us?

Actually, "abominations" is often linked to idol worship in scripture -- worshipping the creature rather than the Creator.

The closer we come to the Creator, the brighter and more lovely His righteousness appears to us, and the darker and more painful the rejection of that righteousness appears.

The big issue in Revelation is WORSHIP
Worship the Creator Who made heaven and earth.

Thus the issue of Sunday observance being sanctioned and ordered in the Pacific Islands is a big issue. I long for the church to speak up against it, and correct the error.

Isn't this the abomination that will bring the final crises?

So true. Most of us are not called to rebuke sinners or the church like Jeremiah was. But all of us can let our light shine. "The way to dispel darkness is to admit light. The best way to deal with error is to present truth. It is the revelation of God's love that makes manifest the deformity and sin of the heart centered in self. {DA 498.5}

Let us not over look the mighty and irrefutable word--ONLY in the Inspired text. Here's just a partial list--

Lack of reverence in the house of God: Isa. 56:7; Volume 5, pages 492-500.

Following the fashions of the world: Isa. 3:16; Volume 1, pages 269, 270; Volume 4, page 632; Volume 3, page 379; Volume 5, page 78; Volume 1, pages 189-191; Volume 1, pages 135, 136; Volume 4, page 631.

Spending money for that which is not bread (health reform): Isa. 55:2; Volume 5, page 197; Isa. 56:12. (Many references can be given from the testimonies on this subject, but space will not permit them here.)

The house of God is made into a house of merchandise by buying and selling denominational publications of all sorts(and sales pitches from the pulpit and consequent sales conducted on church property on Sabbath): Isa. 58:3; Isa. 56:7; Volume 1, pages 471, 472; Volume 8, page 250.

So the eternal question is--Are we really studying this matter as we should? After all --ONLY THOSE WHO SIGH AND CRY---Will--be--sealed!

Ded- ""The way to dispel darkness is to admit light. The best way to deal with error is to present truth. It is the revelation of God's love that makes manifest the deformity and sin of the heart centered in self. {DA 498.5}

Yes, true. But one must not have an attitude warned of by SOP--

"The class who do not feel grieved over their own spiritual declension, nor mourn over the sins of others, will be left without the seal of God. The Lord commissions His messengers, the men with slaughtering weapons in their hands: "Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at My sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house." {5T 211.1}

In the time when His wrath shall go forth in judgments, these humble, devoted followers of Christ will be distinguished from the rest of the world by their soul anguish, which is expressed in lamentation and weeping, reproofs and warnings. While others try to throw a cloak over the existing evil, and excuse the great wickedness everywhere prevalent, those who have a zeal for God's honour and a love for souls will not hold their peace to obtain favour of any. Their righteous souls are vexed day by day with the unholy works and conversation of the unrighteous. They are powerless to stop the rushing torrent of iniquity, and hence they are filled with grief and alarm. They mourn before God to see religion despised in the very homes of those who have had great light. They lament and afflict their souls because pride, avarice, selfishness, and deception of almost every kind are in the church. The Spirit of God, which prompts to reproof, is trampled underfoot, while the servants of Satan triumph. God is dishonoured, the truth made of none effect. (testimonies vol. 5, p.211-212)

What does the "Spirit of God" prompts us to do-- REPROOF.
