GOD'S MERCY

Psalms 130:3 If you, Lord, mark all iniquities,

Lord, who could stand?

4 But with you there is forgiveness,

so that we may be revered.

The truth of the matter is that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. All are guilty, all are worthy of eternal death. For the wages of sin is death.

And yes, all our sins are recorded in the books of heaven.

Matthew 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
Eccl. 12:14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether [it be] good, or whether [it be] evil.

Indeed WHO COULD STAND?

But praise and thanksgiving arise from us as we realize there is forgiveness in abundant measure available! Because our Creator Himself took our sins and reaped the wages of sin which was death upon the cross of Calvary in our place.

Isa. 44:22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.

What an awesome, redeeming provision was made for each and every person.
BUT
why will so many have sins remain on the books of heaven standing against them. Why will so many not have their sins blotted out?

Psalms 109:5 And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.
109:6 Set a wicked man over them as leader: let Satan, the accuser, stand at his right hand.
109:7 When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: even his prayers become sin.
109:15 May their sins always remain before the LORD, that he may blot out their name from the earth.
109:16 For he never thought of doing a kindness, but hounded to death the poor and the needy and the brokenhearted.15 May their sins always remain before the LORD, that he may blot out their name from the earth.

So what is needed to avail ourselves of this marvelous gift of redemption?

Psalms 34:18 The LORD [is] nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saves such as be of a contrite spirit.
Psalms 51:17 The sacrifices of God [are] a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
Is. 57:15 For thus says the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy;?I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite...I will heal him: I will lead him also

Luke 13:3 I tell you,.. except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
Acts 17:30-31 For God.. now commands all people every where to repent:
Because he has appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man (Jesus) whom he has ordained; and He has given assurance to all, in that he has raised him (Christ) from the dead.
Rev. 3:19 Be zealous therefore, and repent.
3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Psalms 136:3 O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endures for ever.
136:4 To him who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endures for ever.
136:23 Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endures for ever:
136:24 And hath redeemed us from our enemies: for his mercy endures for ever.
136:25 Who giveth food to all flesh: for his mercy endures for ever.
136:26 O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endures for ever.

In a world filled with trouble and disappoints why is this psalm so important?
Twenty six times it repeats the claim that God's mercy endures for ever.

In the study of Israel we see ourselves reflected in their continual forgetfulness of the love and care of God. Some trouble arises, some misfortune is perceived or experienced and we murmur and complain and forget.
How often we get desponded and forget.
In this psalm we are urged over and over again to REMEMBER -- God's mercy endures forever!

Remember He created every good thing we see and have. Count all your blessings and see what God has done! Remember how He has led us, personally in the past!

God is faithful to His covenant.

Especially as we contemplate the cross --

Quote
The great center of attraction, Christ Jesus, must not be left out. (in our sermons) It is at the cross of Christ that mercy and truth meet together, and righteousness and peace kiss each other. The sinner must be led to look to Calvary; with the simple faith of a little child he must trust in the merits of the Saviour, accepting His righteousness, believing in His mercy. {LHU 161.2}
Through the love of God the treasures of the grace of Christ have been laid open before the church and the world. "God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). What marvelous, unfathomable love, which led Christ to die for us while we were yet sinners! And what a loss the soul suffers who, understanding the strong claims of the law, fails to acknowledge that where sin abounds, the grace of Christ does much more abound! {LHU 161.3}
When the law is presented as it should be, it reveals the love of God. But it is no wonder that hearts are not melted even by truth when it is presented in a cold, lifeless manner; no wonder that faith staggers at the promises of God, when ministers and workers fail to present Jesus in His relation to the law {Lift Him Up page 161}
Quote

In Jesus mercy and truth are met together.... He was the representative of God and the exemplar of humanity. He presented to the world what humanity might become when united by faith with divinity. The only-begotten Son of God took upon Him the nature of man, and established His cross between earth and heaven. Through the cross, man was drawn to God, and God to man. Justice moved from its high and awful position, and the heavenly hosts, the armies of holiness, drew near to the cross, bowing with reverence; for at the cross justice was satisfied. Through the cross the sinner was drawn from the stronghold of sin, from the confederacy of evil, and at every approach to the cross his heart relents and in penitence he cries, "It was my sins that crucified the Son of God." At the cross he leaves his sins, and through the grace of Christ his character is transformed. {Amazing Grace 74}
