Do you know what's in that food you're eating, that juice you're drinking, or that soap you are washing your hands and face with?

Angie's post about cochineal extract in juice reminded me that there are a number of ingredients in foods and other such items that are or can be of animal origin. I am listing some of the most common in this post. If you want food items that are completely animal free look for "Pareve" or "Parve" on the label. This is a Jewish symbol that signifies that the product does not contain any animal products. "Kosher" means only that it meets the minimun requirements to be "clean." Some rabbis see Jello as acceptable.

  • casein, caseinate,-- usually listed as sodium caseinate, it is the main protein of milk found in almost every product that says it is nondairy. Also look for whey which is the liquid part of milk.
  • gelatin(e) jelly obtained by boiling animal tissues (skin, tendons, ligaments etc) or bones. Jello (TM) is not from clean animal sources. Only Emes Kosher Gel is from vegetable sources.
  • glycerin(e)/glycerol-- clear, colourless liquid which may be derived from animal fats, synthesised from propylene or from fermentation of sugars. The label will not usually tell you if it comes from a vegetable or animal origin.
  • isinglass very pure form of gelatin(e) obtained from the air bladders of some freshwater fishes, especially the sturgeon.
  • mono glycerides/diglycerides-- used in food, especially baked goods. May be from a vegetable or animal origin.
  • oleoic oil liquid obtained from pressed tallow Used in margarines.
  • oleostearin solid obtained from pressed tallow. Used in soap and candle making.
  • pepsin enzyme found in gastric juices Used in cheese making.
  • rennet is extract of calf stomach. Contains the enzyme renin which clots milk. Used in cheese making, junkets.
  • stearate salt of stearic acid Used in body building supplements
  • stearic acid-- organic acid prepared from stearin.
  • stearin(e) is the general name for the three glycerids (monostearin, distearin, tristearin). Formed by the combination of stearic acid and glycerin; chiefly applied to tristearin, which is the main constituent of tallow or suet Used in medicines, skin softener in toiletries and cosmetics.
  • tallow hard animal fat, especially that obtained from the parts about the kidneys of ruminating animals Used in soap and candle making. Castile soap is the only soap that is always animal-free.

There are a lot more items that can be added to this list, but this is a start.

These days unless you grow your own or go organic you can't even be sure about your veges. In the US anyway genetically engineered foods are not required to be labled. We're doing things now like splicing pig genes into tomatoes to make them firmer so they survive transport & handling better.

There is a lot of controversy over this. I, and many others consider this amalgamation dangerous.

We simply must do our best to be healthy & leave the rest to Him.

Kate

Would that make those genetically altered tomatoes unclean?

Hello Kate,

I have a topic going in Healthy Diet & Reicpes called "Frankenfoods or how Cabbage got Crossed with Scorpions" about genetically altered and engineered foods. It is a serious subject of serious concern to all and one I think we need to further explore and learn about. It sounds as if you have more information. I'd be happy for you to add it to the "Frankenfoods" topic and share your observations and concerns. Thanks.

Yes, Daryl, I think it would make the tomatoes unclean just as one drop of poison in a glass of water makes it lethal.

The question then would be; how can you tell a clean tomato from an unclean tomato?

Ask the grower. Neither the USA nor Canada requires labels stating that food is genetically modified.

I've added a lot more information to the "Frankenfood" topic which will help explain.

Any food that is genetically engineered cannot be considered organic. My daughter worked in the produce department of a grocery store for some time. She told me that the "on the vine" tomatoes are organically grown, even though they are not sold as such. Hydroponic tomatoes are usually sold as organic also.
