quote: Originally posted by Gregory: "Since this Aramaic form is found in rabbinic literature even in Hebrew contexts, it indicates that it was a commonly used colloquialism of a close relationship between children and their father, which in the passages of Biblical prayers is transferred to the relationship between the Christian and his God."
See SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST BIBLE DICTIONARY, REVISED EDITION, COMMENTARY REFERENCE SEERIES, Vol. 8, page 2, "abba"
Note: This defination is specific to the exact wording "abba ho pater" that is found in all of the three NT verses. [Mark 14:36, Romans 8:15 & Gal. 4:6] This close relatioonship between children and their father seems to support the oen who told me it best meant "daddy".
So, what does it mean to you to know you can call God "daddy"? Dora has already answered taht question.
God is a God of love, and closeness to His children.
Is the word Daddy actually stated in that Bible Dictionary reference?
I looked it up in the SDA Bible Commentary, and Daddy definitely isn't used there.
I also looked up the word Abba in our SDA Bible Dictionary and this is what it says:
quote:
Abba [Gr. abba, a trans literation of the Aramaic 'abba, the form of 'ab, "father," used in direct address.] A title meaning "father," used for God in early Christian prayers (Rom 8:15; Gal 4:6), after the example of our Lord (Mk 14:36).
No mention of Daddy here or anywhere I have read.
I think our use of the word directly reflects not only the relationship but particularly the reverence we have for our Heavenly Father.

No, "Daddy" is not used in the SDABC Dictionary. I think I previously stated taht I got that elsewhere.
"Father" is clearlly Biblical.

Please allow me to try to clarify my response I gave in the above post.
I stated it there, but, I will state it again to avoid confusion, I do not call Father God "Daddy," even in prayer. and only a few times when in agony of spirit, have I called Him Abba, Father, in prayer, but, in my mind, He is the "Daddy" I could depend on as a child.
No, I am not putting my earthly father in the place of God, either, but, a child will have a role model, whether good or bad.
I would be very uncomfortable (to say the least) to go to church and hear a prayer addressed to "Daddy" in heaven! I would also be uncomfortable to hear a prayer addressed to "My Husband in Heaven," yet, He told His people, "Thy Maker is thine husband." and, admittedly, when having bad marital problems, that has been a comfort to me.
But, God has gotten such a "bad rap," from many people. I have taught children much of 25 years in Sabbath School, and have probably heard about everything, both good and bad, of their thinking about God.
Not long ago, I was asking the young people if they would like to give their reasons for coming to church. One young man said that he comes, so that when he dies God won't drop him into the burning fires of Hell. (No, he hasn't been in the church long, none of his family are in the church, he came because of the Pathfinders.) But, if he felt that way, what must other young people and adults believe about God that is so wrong?
As to the idea of a God who longs to have this close and intimate family relationship with each of us, was first presented (in my hearing) at campmeeeting of 2000. A Dr. Erickson, who is Director of the Counseling and Testing Center at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, presented a seminar on "The Father Who Loves You." And, yes, he gave his ideas on Abba, Father.
I am so glad that each of us have the privilege of understanding God, in a personal way, and that we do not have to conform to the way another understands or relates to Him, as long as it does not infringe on another. Also, if we are not "preaching" error, and saying that some personal thing is right for everyone else. I was only sharing my personal views and in depth feelings about our Father God.
