What about the rest of nature? Are you going to make a "Nature Lover's Forum"?

I feed the birds. Do you want to hear about all the ordinary birds that come to my feeder, and that I see every day, or do you only want us to report sightings of birds we haven't seen before?

OK folks. I'm here. I am a closet bird watcher. Ever since I took Sabbath afternoon walks at 16-mile creek and enjoyed the Scarlet Tanagers and Indigo Buntings I've been a bird nut.

I say that I'm a "closet" one because I don't go on field trips and join clubs--I just like watching the birds!

One of the churches I pastor (Leamington) right near Point Pelee. The other famous site near me is the Jack Miner Bird Sanctuary. Unfortunately the owners are "born again" Christians who won't open their gates on Sunday, which would be the only day my family could drive there.

Sabbath Afternoons we go to a free place near Leamington called "Collisonti's" where they have acres and acres of tropical environment under greenhouse roofs. My children enjoy all sorts of animals there--Parrots, Bats, Goats, Alligators, Snakes and even a young Lioness!

In Chatham we have a huge crow problem. Our town's response is to murder as many as they can. Do other bird lovers have any better solutions to this problem that I can bring to the Mayor?

By the way, our mayor's brother has been convicted on some animal cruelty charges that stemmed from acting out his ideas on what should happen to Chatham's crows and other "nusiance birds."

Please share any of your bird watching experiences under a separate new topic.

YOU LIVE NEAR POINT PELEE?!!! We went there, and attended the Leamington church, for our 10th anniversary, 11 years ago. We walked out to the point - what a job! And we went to the Jack Miner Sanctuary. It was beautiful.

We used to have Purple Martins, Robins, Blue Birds, Blue Jays, Wrens, you name it, it came around.

The last couple years we haven't had anything around here.

Hardly see anything in the woods, either, and we have the Huron National Forest almost in our backyard.
I really miss them.

What happened to the birds Gerry? Has something killed them, or have they lost their habitat or food supply?

Thank you for this wonderful site where we can share in our love of birds.
Introducing Zita from Christchurch,New Zealand - the land of Paradise!
Birds are amazing creatures.
My first close introduction to a bird was at 5 years, we lived in the country, and the magpies lived alongside of us.Their game of course was to divebomb me as I walked up the hill to home. One never forgets when a Magpie scores a point!
Magpies are also great talkers and I have known of several in my life.
The most recent one lived in the local wildlife park. He had the ability to imitate a police siren, and often had everyone fooled.
He unfortunately had a disastrous accident the other day, so we have folks frantically trying to teach magpies to talk for a replacement.
Speaking of disasters, my cockatiel managed to impale himself on a nail in my aviary. Fortunately my good neighbour came for a visit, and we went over to look in and discovered the disaster in progress. A prayer, a hammer and my neighbours strong muscles released him, and he was a very sorry bird for a few days. I had to force feed him every half hour with food and water which included an antibiotic and he managed to survive the terrible shock. At present he is enjoying the comforts of the Conservatory until he is stronger.
That same week my husband brought home a swallow that was very dehydrated, having fallen from the nest in the church porch.
Having all the equipment already on hand, I was able to get water into it, but alas, he was already too far gone and died shortly afterwards.
My biggest thrill this Spring was watching 3 baby canaries hatch out in the height of a terrible storm. The nest had been made on the ledge in the other aviary, so as I passed in and out every day I was able to see them at close quarters. The thrill when they left the nest and are now happily part of the aviary. Unfortunately the mother got eggbound and I was unable to save her. But again I observed the canary family taking over and making sure they were fed, a lesson we humans could well learn.
Be Still,
Zita
P.S. Cathy, how are you going to handle the English way of spelling????
eg: neighbour lol
incedently spellcheck suggests I spell my name Zit!!!
