This is the optimal time of year for feeding the birds. Some feed year-round, which I prefer to do, as this brings them where I can see them from my house. I have several feeders. The one I most appreciate is the double suet feeder, because it brings in my beloved woodpeckers and nuthatches. The favored suet is the peanut type, which they will eat before they even start on the other cake in the holder, so I always have peanut suet along with some other kind.
I have in the past filled my big feeder with a mixture of black oil sunflower seeds, millet, and safflower seed. I buy these separately in bulk. I also have a “small bird” feeder, with a mesh cage around it to keep out squirrels. I thought it was meant to exclude large birds, but found that the cage is too close to the feeder, and they can stretch their necks and eat from it anyway. The only birds it actually keeps out are my very favorites, the cardinals. So I am not so sure I am going to continue to use it, even though it cost me plenty to buy it.
Who else here feeds the birds? What kind of feeders do you have, and what do you put in them?
