Around 1990 between The Pas and Mafeking Manitoba, I had to stop once to let a cougar cross the road.
I was so facinated with the animal that I parked my car and followed it as it walked parallel to the highway.
Later on I picked up a hitchiker (Gabriel) who told me that there has been a recent increase in the cougar population in the area because fir trappers are going on to other professions.
The small animals they used to trap are now plentiful enough for the mountain lions to live off of and increase their range.
