In the summer of '94 I was driving for an outfit that made it possible for me to get all over the US and Canada. This incident happened around the end of June or the first of July. I had to deliver a truck into Las Vegas, as I drove down the Interstate I saw what I thought was a dog crossing ahead of me. Not wanting to hurt someones pet, I slowed down, but, as I drew closer, the crazy thing stopped in the middle of the road. I came to a complete stop several feet away from it, and with a flick of it's tail, it jumped up onto the berm at the shoulder. I got a good lokk at it then, and discovered it was a coyote, not a pet dog. I swear, it was grinning at me. The joke was on me, I guess. Gerry B.

Gerry, that makes me homesick. Living way out in the country in southern Alabama, we could sit out at night and listen to the coyotes yipping out back. We could listen to the chuck-wills-widow call at night (it's related to the whippoorwill). But most of all I miss the mockingbirds. They're called that for a good reason. They imitate other bird songs, and occasionally other noises. I also learned a few things about blue jays there, but then this isn't the bird topic. ------------------ ________________________ Even so come, Lord Jesus Linda

We have mockingbirds here, too. One of the little beggars learned to make the sound of our phone, it had one of those warbling sounds instead of a ring. ------------------ What is popular is not always right. What is right is not always popular. Gerry B.

Several years ago we were driving and enjoying the very beautiful Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. We met this girl on a bicycle who was bicycling across Canada. We chatted with her a moment and then continued on our way. We came to a beautiful lookout of the ocean so we stopped to take a look. While we were enjoying the scenery, we suddenly heard a scream up the highway. We heard another scream and then saw her on the bicycle speeding down the highway. When she saw us she sped to us at the lookout and told us what had happened. She was bicycling down the hill when a coyote came out of the woods and started chasing her. That was the screaming we heard as the coyote was at her heels. If it hadn't been a down hill ride, she wouldn't have escaped that coyote. We continued down hill behind her until we came to a motel where we spent the night after seeing her safely to a camp site where she spent the night in her tent. We never did know what happened to that coyote. __________________________ In His Love, Mercy & Grace Daryl

I don't blame the young woman from fleeing the coyote. In this day and age, with disease as rampant as it is, wisdom tells us that when wildlife comes to the point that it does not run away, it is usually a sign that the animal may be infected with rabies. About 4 years ago, I was outside for a walk in our woods with our granddaughter, when I happened to look up to spot a small canine. Second look told me that it was a red fox. The last red fox in our area was seen approximately 30 years prior. It didn't appear to be frightened, but appeared to be eager to make closer contact. I hurried our little girl into the house and the fox was never seen around again. A few weeks later, another story about a fox with rabies aired on the news. He attacked a woman and her broom in a major city south of us. Got to admit I was thankful for having seen the critter.

Quite often when wild critters are fed by humans, they associate food with us and lose their natural fear. If we don't come up with what they have come to expect, they get angry and give chase. We have red fox, coyotes and wolves around here, they just know enough to stay away from humans. Also a lot of White Tail [deer] and Turkeys. I live on the edge of the Huron National forest here in the Tawas area. There have been several reportings of Black Bear, but I haven't seen one.
