Gator search on in Central Park lake

New York City has everything, including Florida alligator roaming park lake
NEW YORK (AP) - The legend of the Florida alligator in New York City has slithered back to life in Central Park. And no, it's not a crock.

At an estimated at 45 to 60 centimetres long, the reptile was seen lurking in the waters and shoreline reeds at the Harlem Meer, a small lake in the park's northeast corner.

As many as 25 people reported spotting the reptile late Saturday. Among them were an off-duty police officer and his two daughters, several city employees and park management workers.

''One person grabbed it by the tail and flung it on the ground, but the noise and confusion apparently drove it back into the water,'' said Anne Hagan, spokeswoman for the park's private management.

Summoned to help, police sealed off an area with yellow crime-scene tape and launched a boat, with one officer carrying a noose-like device.
