I thought we would do a study from both the Bible and the writings of EGW on the observance of the Sabbath and anything else related to that, therefore, I have created this topic.
I actually want this to be a focused study baaed on a paragraph by study paragraph of the section titled, The Observance of the Sabbath, found on page 349 from Volume 6 of the Testimonies For The Church.
I will quote the first paragraph in a separate post and then ask for your comments on that paragraph.

Here is the first paragraph: quote:
Great blessings are enfolded in the observance of the Sabbath, and God desires that the Sabbath day shall be to us a day of joy. There was joy at the institution of the Sabbath. God looked with satisfaction upon the work of His hands. All things that He had made He pronounced "very good." Genesis 1:31. Heaven and earth were filled with rejoicing. "The morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy." Job 38:7. Though sin has entered the world to mar His perfect work, God still gives to us the Sabbath as a witness that One omnipotent, infinite in goodness and mercy, created all things. Our heavenly Father desires through the observance of the Sabbath to preserve among men a knowledge of Himself. He desires that the Sabbath shall direct our minds to Him as the true and living God, and that through knowing Him we may have life and peace. {6T 349.1}
I bolded what stood out most to me.
What does this paragraph tell us about the observance of the Sabbath?

That saying things like "you may wade but not swimm" is a betrayal of the sabbaths purpose of rejoicing in and enjoying Gods creation?
/Thomas
Leviticus 23:3 " 'There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a Sabbath to the LORD .

I would say that anybody who focuses on what we can get away with doing on the Sabbath will miss out on the real purpose of the Sabbath and, consequently, also the joy and delight of the Sabbath. I am not saying that we either should or shouldn't talk about that aspect of Sabbath observance. I am only speaking about the focus aspect of it. I like the Bible text you provided and quoted. The Sabbath day is truly a day of rest as well as a day of holy convocation, a day of holy assembly.

You could see it as a question of "what can I get away with". But you could also see it as a question of "how can I hedge this in safely enough". Two sides of one issue..
More on the quote, how is a greater union with God achived? What can be done to make room for personal differances in ways of reaching this closer fellowship with our Creator and Saviour?
/Thomas

västergötland your quoted statement of "you may wade but not swimm": how is it that a swim in the ocean is "breaking Sabbath"? Daryl: You know that the church is FULL of statements and rules of what we supposedly can and can not do on Sabbath.

Both my husband and I find Sabbath to be the most difficult day of the week. We are both relatively new to Adventism and do not know what to do with ourselves. Sabbath and its rules and regulations seem so foreign to us.
Perhaps someone could shed some light on how to make it a joy.

The Pharisees of Christ's day made observing the Sabbath a burden. We need to be prayerfully careful that we are not doing a similar thing in our day. If we could get away from the rules and regulations aspect of the Sabbath and focus on doing those things that makes the Sabbath truly a day of joy and delight and that directs our thoughts towards Him, then we can't go wrong can we.

Hi Shelley, Here is something that I find to be a joy on the Sabbath. My wife and I will go to a bird sanctuary, and look at all the birds there and listen to their songs, and look at the plants and trees. During this time we think about how God "Spoke and it stood forth". The uniquness of every plant and creature all from the hand of God. Basically spend time with Him in what He has made for you. Even a walk at the beach to enjoy what He has made for you, and you know what fellowshipping with others, helping out the poor things like that is what God desires and not something like go to the mall for the latest sales, or a restaurant etc. In a nutshell.. nature walks, studying is Word, felowshipping with others, things that are His ways you know. God Bless, Will

I am very curious to know: -does the SDA church have a manual or book that states what is acceptable on the Sabbath day with regards to activities? -I have a 10 year old son, and for the family to have "Sabbath day activities" I find it difficult with the huge load that is placed on us to "volunteer" at church, so what activities besides "nature walks" are permited on the Sabbath?
