The Sabbath Afternoon Section says this about Abigail:She was an intelligent and beautiful woman but, unfortunately, married a selfish, short-sighted, and mean man, Nabal—a descendant of Caleb, but nothing like his esteemed forefather. Nabal may have been wealthy, but his name or nickname, which means “fool” or “foolish,” accurately reflected his character.
In the time of Abigail and Nabal, marriages were prearranged, and so Abigail probably had no choice in the matter. Circumstances seemed to speak against her in such a marriage as this. Conditions were not favorable, but in the glimpse that we are given into the life of Abigail, we are encouraged not to become victims of circumstances.
Abigail did not try to escape reality. She was realistic about her situation (1 Sam. 25:25), but she did not let circumstances ruin her. She decided to grow where she was planted.

What's more important? Is it being a good talker, is it being a good listener, or is it being both a good talker and a good listener? What James says is, "So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath" (James 1:19). So, it's not just important to be a good listerner - the Christian has also to be a good talker. But, in order to be able to say something which will be of help to the person, you must first listen (and this means really listen) to him/her.

"Can a Christian be a victim of circumstances?" is a good question. As you are saying "No" to that question, how then do you define "a victim of circumstances"? Wasn't Abigail a victim of circumstances? Can a Christian be a victim of the circumstances? If we look at Joseph's story we will have to say No. "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God" (Rom. 8:28).
