quote:
Let's compare the crime rates in America's safest city versus those in Canada's worst city for crime.

In this corner, Simi "Safest Large City in America" Valley, Californa.
Population: 111,351.
Suburban home to affluent white-collar commuters.

In the colder corner, Regina, "Canada's Crime Capital" Saskatchewan.
Population: 193,652.
Capital city of a province dependent on agriculture. First Nations people make up a sizable minority group.

Simi Valley's crime rate: 15.1 per 1,000 residents.

Regina's crime rate: 14.8 per 1,000 residents.

The difference becomes starker as you go down the American list and up the Canadian list. In 10th spot on America's safe list is San Jose (population 894,943) with a crime rate of 25.49 per 1,000 residents. In 10th spot on Canada's worst crime list is Montreal (population 3,326,510) with a crime rate of 7.2 per 1,000 residents. Montreal's crime rate is one-third that of San Jose.

America's Safest Cities: (crime rate)
1. Simi Valley, CA (15.11)
2. Thousand Oaks, CA (16.58)
3. Santa Clarita, CA (17.74)
4. Amherst Town, NY (17.78)
5. Sunnyvale, CA (20.02)
6. Daly City, CA (20.54)
7. Irvine, CA (22.42)
8. Huntington Beach, CA (23.89)
9. Glendale, CA (25.18)
10. San Jose, CA (25.49)
(Source: FBI)

Canada's Worst Cities for Crime:
1. Regina (14.8)
2. Saskatoon (12.9)
3. Vancouver (11.2)
4. Victoria (10.6)
5. Winnipeg (10.4)
6. Halifax (9.2)
7. Thunder Bay (8.9)
8. London (8.7)
9. Edmonton (8.4)
10. Montreal (7.2)

So why aren't the Americans packing their bags and heading north of the border? Why are the Canadians packing theirs and heading south? Wages and job opportunities.

All dementia aside, Canada does sound appealing, and part of the year I might stay chilled enough to suit me, nes pas .

Linda was already nervous when we went to Michigan, I kept saying "what if" & she kept up the litany/dirge of "snow - winter", I kept saying "enough to play in". She would groan, I would grin & look at RealEstate as we zoomed past.

She freezes, I roast. I never realized before, we sorta sound like an Adventist coffee substitute commercial. Linda & Ed's freeze dried.... full bodied... slow roasted... blend of American and Canadian flavors. Only on MSDAOL (and I don't even like coffee)

If Canada stays smart, this is one record they will be glad to let us keep.

I don't know, but there were a lot of young men that went north into Canada during the Vietnam era.
Maybe they heard about all the rewards they will get if they come back home?

Australia
I can't resist...
If Australia's borders collided with either the US or Canada, we'd be swamped with immigrants from both places. Australia is one of the world's best-kept secrets.

Hi Zyph!!!! If Australia wasn't so far away, it would be an option!! I would love to at least visit there someday....

Did anyone notice that Calgary is NOT on that list of top? tens??? I'm very proud of my hometown!

BTW Ed, I have never had a moose eat my garden... or my mom's garden, or anyone's garden. Although my sister's landlord complains about deer getting into their garden (in the country) but I'm sure you probably have that problem down south too. Of course, if people would fence in their gardens, it would probably reduce the occurrance.... maybe. I like Canada, you just have to tell Linda that she'll get used to the weather, eventually! I did when I went to Tennessee!

AHHHHH! Tennessee, lived there for many years. Got married there. My first child was born there. I like Tennessee! Don't like the crime in Nashville, though.

And the deer eat the gardens from border to border, and north of the border, and probably south of the border too. Only an 8' fence will keep them out. They jump anything else!

Nope, fences don't keep Moose out of my little garden.

It's the sign that warns "Attention: any Moose caught in Ed's plants gets saddled and ridden by Ed (after he's had a full lunch to boot) .

So far no Moose have volunteered for a backache .

I have/had a problem with White tail getting into mine.
My dog keeps them away, now.
They don't like the noise.
As far as moose are concerned, I'll put up a sign and let them know my neighbor to the North will eat them.
He's a carnivore.
Weighs around 180 pounds and has short black and tan fur.
Answers to the name Scooter.
If it's meat, he'll eat it.
Or at least lick it to death.

Carleton Place, Ontario, Canad...
I lived in or near several of the "high crime" Canadian cities. Our churches there were broken into regularly. We had to install a security system and alarm in each one--something that seems unheard of here in Ontario.

Sadly in the Western provinces there is a great deal of disillusionment and poverty, especially among the First Nations. Almost all inmates in correctional facilities in Manitoba and Saskatchewan are First Nations people. I used to hold worship talks in the Winnipeg Remans center. There's no question of a problem there.

Would you believe that both our church and food bank have been broken into even here in Fredericton, NB!!!

And I consider this area one of the safest places in the world to live in!
