I am wondering if anyone on this board has had any kind of music lessons? Doesn't matter what instrument (including voice & choir), I'm interested in learning what instrument you took lessons on and how many years of music you have had. Do you use your musical talents now at church? or anywhere else or perhaps just for your own entertainment?
I know that John mentioned taking some piano or music lessons in the past...but I want to hear from those who have had any kind of music lessons no matter how long ago!
I took piano lessons every year through gradeschool and piano and organ lessons through Academy. I also have taken some specialized classes and now teach piano. I have 25 students this year and my recital is coming up on April 19th.

I use to play the violin many years ago, and I did this for a while maybe a couple of years tops, but I practiced everyday and was able to mimic notes I heard from songs such as the theme song for Dr.Shivago. However it was only the first few notes I stopped playing when my music teacher suggested that I should start to play in the school prchestra and immediately the words "This is gonna turn into work now" flashed across my mind, so I stopped playing. I regret it now, but still think about picking up the violin and playing again. God Bless, Will

Will, this is typical of students who learn to play an instrument. They are hoping they won't have to work hard at practicing. Unfortunately that doesn't work. It seems no matter what you do in life, it takes hard work to succeed. But try to explain that to a young person!! I didn't understand it when I took lessons and my mother sometimes had to get after me to get my practice time in. Now I'm thankful she did help me in this.

I wanted to learn to play the guitar which I began to do on the self-learning and practicing plan. It didn't last very long, however, I did learn to play a chords some of which I need to relearn all over again. I still have my guitar which I desire to take out and make another attempt at it every once in a long while and then.
I do sing a lot though doing solos mainly, but also with another person or two at times. I used to belong first to a trio and then to a singing group which I enjoyed at that time.

Hi!! I took guitar lessons when I was in junior high for about a year, a friend of my mom's gave them... Then, we bought a piano and I taught myself to play but we decided lessons would be a good idea, except the lady we picked for lessons was "old school" and I wanted to learn to play "interesting" pieces so it didn't last longer than a semester (high school). I also took a semester of voice in high school and then another two years of voice in college. To supplement the voice lessons, I was also in the CUC Singers and the Southern College Choir.
I still use my voice lessons and one day soon hope to be able to get back to piano playing...
Oh, I also toyed with the flute, clarinet and saxophone although none of those lasted very long as I didn't own any of the instruments. I would have stuck with flute or clarinet had we been able to purchase one.
