I was reading this this evening about evangelical Pat Robertson. He preaches against the evils of gambling, but owns a race horse and goes to the race track to watch it race. Says he loves to watch the animal and doesn't bet on any races. The atheist/agnostic guide at About.com is the one who pointed this out. You know, the world is always going to find the inconsistencies between our talking and our walking. If you want to read you can find the article here. For discussion purposes, I am asking the following question: If he isn't betting on his horse or any other horse, is owning a race horse and racing it gambling?

Why do people go to the race track? This Sabbath is the annual run for the roses, the Kentucky Derby. Thousands of people will be there. What will many, if not most, of them be doing? Walking up to the betting windows and placing a bet on their favorite horse, gambling that it will win the race and they will win big bucks. Pat Robertson may not bet on his horse, but other people do. In that way, he is encouraging gambling. He owns the horse that others are betting on it to win. I have to agree with Linda. In a way, he is gambling, because he is putting his horse in the races because he is "betting" it can win. That's just my opinion, I dunno about anyone else. Happy Sabbath! God bless, Angie

Angie your opinion is very correct in my opinion. Anything we do to cause someone else to sin we are guilty of it ourselves. Of course what Pat Roberson is doing is very wrong. What Linda said about the world going to see the "inconsistencies between our talking and our walking" is very true.

Linda posted, "Pat Robertson may not bet on his horse, but other people do. In that way, he is encouraging gambling. He owns the horse that others are betting on it to win." That is a very good point you made there, Linda.

I heard on the news last night that there is only one horse race track in Ohio that permits betting. On Saturday, they said that over 34 million dollars (US) was wagered on horse races that day! What an enormous amount of money was wasted on a bet.

Linda, That reminds me of a line from a movie in which a character who operates a casino remarks on what a fantastic business opportunity it is for him. "People willingly give me their money, I take it and give them absolutely nothing in return!" What other industry could market its goods and services on such a philosophy. "Spend lots of money at our store and walk out absolutely empty-handed!" The bottom line is that greed motivates people to do some truly amazing and irrational things even on the faintest hope of getting rich. Of course, Pat Robertson has been asking for people's money for years without really giving them anything of real value in return! Giddy up horsey! Tom

quote: Robertson Selling Horse Interests ** According to AP, Pat Robertson plans to sell his horse racing interests to quiet the objections of some of his followers. The New York Times reported on Robertson's involvement in horse racing last month, causing a furor among those who object to gambling. In response, said AP, Roberston issued the following statement: "I am sorry that my fondness for the performance of equine athletes has caused you an offense." In the letter, Robertson wrote that competition among horses has been part of every society that owned them. As a child, he used to race his horses against others "over country roads or rolling pastures." "He wants to be above reproach, so he'll do whatever he has to do," a spokeswoman for the Christian Broadcasting Network in Virginia Beach, Va., told AP.
