I was disappointed in the decision of several European newspapers to publish cartoons of Mohammad. It was unwise in the extreme, not to mention rude and inappropriate and does not bode well for Christian-Islam relations. Real Christianity has no part in this kind of behaviour IMO. I hope that our church makes or has made a clear, to-the-point statement against this.

"As Seventh-day Adventists we support and encourage the responsible use of the right of free expression," he added. "Inherent in that responsibility is also being mindful of not insulting others, and causing injury to their beliefs and practices. Opinions can be shared without the color of disrespect, and debate can take place but without offending the beliefs of others."

"My work as a Seventh-day Adventist leader has taken me to many nations. I witness the value of diversity and the fact that Christians build the community alongside adherents of many other religions and worldviews," he said. "And I recommend that living by the principle of the Golden Rule, which asks us to do unto others as we would wish them to do unto us, would inspire us to live in harmony with all people, be free in expressing our views, but also maintaining courtesy and respect to all."

I wonder how many of our seminars on prophecy would be considered "insulting." Our newspapers always have "insulting" editorial cartoons. Nobody whines over the Gerorge Bush cartoons that appear in our newspapers on a weekly basis.

There is no justification for the destruction that has been done in the name of "nobody can insult Islam." It might not be Christian, but why do we expect non-Christians to act like Christians? Wasn't the artist muslim himself?

Check out the on-line cartoons of Mohammed. Now those are offensive.

Quoted from NYT
quote:
At first, the agitation was limited to Denmark. Ahmed Akkari, 28, a Lebanese-born Dane, acts as spokesman for the European Committee for Honoring the Prophet, an umbrella group of 27 Danish Muslim organizations to press the Danish government into action over the cartoons.

Mr. Akkari said the group had worked for more than two months in Denmark without eliciting any response. "We collected 17,000 signatures and delivered them to the office of the prime minister, we saw the minister of culture, we talked to the editor of the Jyllands-Posten, we took many steps within Denmark, but could get no action," Mr. Akkari said, referring to the newspaper that published the cartoons. He added that the prime minister's office had not even responded to the petition.

Frustrated, he said, the group turned to the ambassadors of Muslim countries in Denmark and asked them to speak to the prime minister on their behalf. He refused them too.

-...-

The wave swept many in the region. Sheik Muhammad Abu Zaid, an imam from the Lebanese town of Saida, said he began hearing of the caricatures from several Palestinian friends visiting from Denmark in December but made little of it.

"For me, honestly, this didn't seem so important," Sheik Abu Zaid said, comparing the drawings to those made of Jesus in Christian countries. "I thought, I know that this is something typical in such countries."

Then, he started to hear that ambassadors of Arab countries had tried to meet with the prime minister of Denmark and had been snubbed, and he began to feel differently.

"It started to seem that this way of thinking was an insult to us," he said. "It is fine to say, 'This is our freedom, this is our way of thinking.' But we began to believe that their freedom was something that hurts us."

Also, It seems that being anti-islam has become the politically correct thing in Denmark in the last years. So you have a group of people that have feelt bullied by the society they live in and then comes a newspaper edditor with the bright idea of "lets see if we can find caricature drawers to make some fun of Islam, drawers who wont show self restraint..". Another thing I read about this whole mess is that apparently the same paper editor rejected caricatures against christianity one or two years ago on the grouds that "they would cause an outrage".

There is of course no justification for torching embasies (or any other buildings or humans) but if you deliberately execute an experiment to see how far you can go insulting 1.5 billion people before they take action, well, all Ill say is that stupidity will catch up to you sooner or later..

/Thomas

There's a lot more to this than meets the eyes. The cartoon was originally published around September without a single riot. It was subsequently published in an Egyptian newspaper. No riot.

Why all of a sudden is there rioting? (Syrian and Iranian govt anyone?) And where do the countries that allow the least freedom for Christianity get off demanding an apology from a government for the actions of its free press? Why aren't the Europeans rioting and demanding freedom of religion for Christians in Islamic countries? That's far more insulting than one cartoon.

The greatest part is that the cartoon presents Mohammed as a terrorist and what are his followers doing now? Burning down embassies.

Are we to treat others as they treat us or as Jesus told us to treat them?

Are we to stand by and do nothing as our Christian brothers and sisters are persecuted?

Is the schoolyard bully persecuted when a teacher punishes him/her for harrasing another kid? Was nazi Germany persecuted when US/Brittain and Russia made revenge on German soil in the late WWII? Is Iran persecuted when US/EU/Russia/UN tells it to stay away from nukes or face the consequences?

I agree there is a lot more going on here than meets the eye. We are living in the last days, and all these troubles are being masterminded by one whose aim is to keep as many as possible out of the Kingdom. We just have to make sure that we are standing for the right thing, and remember that when we do, we can see in this situation a small sample of the wrath that will be turned on us. It could be that in His mercy the Lord is preparing us, and helping us to see how much we need to seek Him while we have time.
