We are living in the time of the end. The fast-fulfilling signs of the times declare that the coming of Christ is near at hand. The days in which we live are solemn and important. The Spirit of God is gradually but surely being withdrawn from the earth. Plagues and judgments are already falling upon the despisers of the grace of God. The calamities by land and sea, the unsettled state of society, the alarms of war, are portentous. They forecast approaching events of the greatest magnitude. {9T 11.1} The agencies of evil are combining their forces and consolidating. They are strengthening for the last great crisis. Great changes are soon to take place in our world, and the final movements will be rapid ones. {9T 11.2} The condition of things in the world shows that troublous times are right upon us. The daily papers are full of indications of a terrible conflict in the near future. Bold robberies are of frequent occurrence. Strikes are common. Thefts and murders are committed on every hand. Men possessed of demons are taking the lives of men, women, and little children. Men have become infatuated with vice, and every species of evil prevails. {9T 11.3}

She wrote those words back in 1909. Since then quite a few people have been born and died of old age. Gives new meaning to the word "soon".

The church faced a great problem at the end of the first century when too many Christians turned old and died without experiencing the return of Jesus. They were certain their interpretations of the prophecies were correct. What a disappointment.
Is there anything we can learn from the message to the church in Ephesus?
"Here is a last piece of advice. If you believe in goodness and if you value the approval of God, fix your minds on the things which are holy and right and pure and beautiful and good. Model your conduct on what you have learned from me, on what I have told you and shown you, and you will find the God of peace will be with you."

Proverbs 16:22 Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly.

The word "soon" in the passage posted above should be taken in context. What could have been should have been - but doubt and disbelief delayed it. It seems inappropriate to quote it today (104 years later) to prove Jesus' return "is near at hand" "right upon us".

Do you mean to say that the word, "soon", has no real meaning other than what has been for 1000s of years relative to individuals? When Christ said soon, how did He mean it? Jesus said Lazarus was asleep. Then He clarified that he was dead but Jesus was going to wake him. The context is that to Jesus death was not any different than sleep. He can wake people from either state. Physics tells us that if a rocket left earth at the speed of light and returned in an hour that the pilot would have aged an hour, but those on earth would have aged 100-years (for example). Perhaps When Jesus left earth to go to heaven, His trip will only be a few days at speeds faster than the speed of light and He will Cleanse the temple in a few hours by Heaven's clock? But it will be 1000's of years from our perspective. There are some things that our finite minds cannot understand but that are not salvation issues and we don't do ourselves any good being too concerned with them. Is this an important issue? Or maybe it will come into clearer view as we continue to study. How long is soon as compared to eternity? How long is the 6,00-year reign of sin as compared to eternity. What seems long in one context is not all that long in another context.
