Sometime ago I wrote a series of Bible lessons on Health. I am posting the first lesson here and would like your assessment please.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lesson 1
Your Bible and Your Health
Good health. It is something that we tend to take for granted until it eludes us, then it becomes of the utmost importance to us. We know that without robust health we will be unable to continue our normal living routine; or to carry out our daily duties, holding a job, caring for our families. It is not just our own lives that are affected by poor health, but also that of our families as well. When illness strikes, we seek for any means by which we can regain wellness and a return to abundant health of body, and consequently of mind, for whatever affects the body also affects the mind. And whatever affects the mind affects the spirit. Very few people, even among Christians, make a connection between a healthy mind and body and our service to God. They see the two as separate and distinct; not at all connected. Yet the beloved apostle, John, wished that all might enjoy health of body in the same proportion as they enjoy spiritual health. The great wise man, Solomon, told us that God's word is life and health to the body. Jesus said that His words are spirit and they are life. He told us to taste and see that the Lord is good.
God cares not just about our spiritual welfare but about our physical welfare as well. He designed and made us, and He knows what will keep us in the best spiritual, physical, and mental health. The laws he has given were not given to be arbitrary and deprive us of the pleasures of life, but that we might enjoy abundant health and long life. What we eat and drink, what we wear, what we hear and see, everything we do, even what we think and how we interact with others, affects all aspects of our health. The wisest man to ever live tells us, "My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee." Proverbs 3:1,2. Whether you are in your youth, your golden years, or somewhere in between, God wants you to have the best of health. Even if we have abused our bodies by wrong habits, we are never too old to make changes that can make our lives more comfortable.
In these lessons we will study God's Word to discover what health principles are revealed there that, when acted on, assure us we can have healthy minds and bodies and healthy families. What does God tell us about how we should live and eat and drink for physical, mental, and spiritual health? We will look at how our bodies are made and how they operate; we will examine the best course to follow that we might live in as healthy a condition as possible. He who made us knows best how we should live to preserve good health, and how we can get well if we are sick.
All you need to do these lessons is a desire to know what God's word says, a King James version of the Bible, and a pen or pencil. To do the study, first pause and ask God to send the Holy Spirit to help you understand what you are about to read and study. Next, read each question, then read the scripture text that is given, find the answer in the text and write it on the appropriate line on the separate answer sheet. God's blessings be with you. [I have removed the answer lines for posting it here.]
1. How dear are God's people to Him? Zechariah 2:8
2. How do we know that God is interested in out health? Matthew 8:16,17
3. Why does He have such an interest in our health?
A. Genesis 1:27
B. 3 John 2
"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food." Genesis 2:7-9.
4. What does Jesus understand about our bodies and our health? Hebrews 2:14
"For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings." "Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted." Hebrews 2:10, 17, 18.
5. Why does He understand? Isaiah 53:4, 5
"Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed." 1 Peter 2:24.
"But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them." Matthew 9:36.
6. What kind of health does God show among the nations? Psalm 67:1, 2
7. How can we know this saving health for ourselves? Proverbs 4:20-22
The words of Scripture tell us much about health of body and of mind and how to maintain it. This is known as the law of health and is as important to Christians as the moral law that we call the ten commandments. Those who have followed these laws have greatly benefited from them by long life and sound health.
8. What does the story of Jacob tell us about suffering from ill health when we get old? Genesis 43:26-28.
Jacob was about 130 years old at the time.
9. When Jacob was ill, what was his mind like during his illness? Genesis 48:1, 17-19
Even in illness, his mind was still clear. Nor was he an invalid. "And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people." Genesis 49:33. The Bible makes no mention that Jacob was ever sick before the illness he had just before his death.
10. What was the health of Moses like at the end of his 120 years of life? Deuteronomy 34:7
11. What feat did Caleb perform when he was 85? Joshua 14:10-14
12. You will notice that the Bible patriarchs we have been looking at were followers of the true God, and were obedient to Him. What was the health of the nations around these followers of God like?
A. Deuteronomy 28:22
B. verses 27-29
C. verses 60-61
13. What promise had God made to the children of Israel concerning their health? Exodus 15:26
"And the Lord will take away from thee all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee; but will lay them upon all them that hate thee." Deuteronomy 7:15.
14. How does God say we are to present our bodies to Him? Romans 12:1
15. We make our bodies a living sacrifice by doing what to the flesh? 2 Corinthians 7:1
"Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty." 2 Corinthians 6:17, 18.
16. We learn from the Bible that our health is affected by the things that we do everyday. List some of these things and how they affect our health.
A. Psalm 34:19, 20
B. Proverbs 3:7, 8
C. Proverbs 14:30
D. Proverbs 16:24
E. Isaiah 58:6-11
F. Exodus 23:25
G. Psalm 41:1-3
Thanks, Wendy for you reply of encouragement. I am posting lesson 2. I hope that some others will also give me some feedback.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Lesson 2:
Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

1. How long had God known Jeremiah? Jeremiah 1:5

2. Does God know each of us in the same way? Psalm 139:16

"Thus saith the Lord that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen." Isaiah 44:2.

"Thus saith the Lord, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the Lord that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself." Isaiah 44:24.

3. Whose hand is it that fashions the human body? Job 10:18

4. Of what are we made? Job 10:9

See the chart on the next page of this lesson for a list of the earth's elements from which our bodies are made.

5. Why did David say he would praise the Lord? Psalm 139:14

fearfully: to fear, reverence, be afraid.
wonderfully: to be distinct, marked out, be separated, distinguished.

The Bible refers to the anatomical structure of the body as well as to its functions. Several times anatomy (body structure) and physiology (body function) are used metaphorically to describe the relationship between God and man and between God and His church. Such metaphors show that the Bible writers had a knowledge of how the human body works.

Minerals in the Body
Mineral/ Percent of Body Weight

Calcium 1.5 - 2.2
Phosphorus 0.8 - 1.2
Potassium 0.35
Sulfur 0.25
Sodium 0.15
Chlorine 0.15
Magnesium 0.05

The following minerals are found in trace amounts in the body
Iron
Zinc
Selenium
Manganese
Copper
Iodine
Molybdenum
Cobalt
Chromium
Fluorine
Silicon
Vanadium
Nickel
Tin
Barium
Arsenic
Bromine
Strontium
Cadmium
Gold
Silver
Aluminum
Mercury
Bismuth
Gallium
Lead
Antimony
Boron
Lithium
Plus 20 others

These minerals plus water are what constitutes the human body. We truly are made of the dust of the ground.

6. What did Job say he was clothed with? Job 10:11

The skin is the largest organ of the body.

7. Job said that he was fenced with what? Job 10:11

The bones form the skeleton which gives the body shape and rigidity. It holds us together and holds us upright. The sinews are the muscles, tendons and ligaments which hold the bones together and allow the body to move.

Read Ezekiel's vision of the valley of dry bones in Ezekiel 37:1-10, then answer the following questions.

8. What did God tell Ezekiel to prophesy to the bones? verses 4-6

9. After Ezekiel prophesied, what then happened? verse 7

10. What came onto the bones? verse 8 (first part)

11. What then covered the sinews and flesh? verse 8

12. What did the formed bodies lack? verse 8

"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground." Genesis 2:7. God formed the human body with His own hands, bone by bone, then connected the bones with muscles, ligaments, and tendons. He fashioned the organs and put them in place with the miles of blood and lymph vessels and nerve pathways. All this He covered with skin. But man was still not a living soul.

13. What did Ezekiel prophesy next and what was the result? verses 9-10

The Lord "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." Genesis 2:7. When God breathed life into man, the body He had formed came alive. The heart beat, the lungs filled with air, the blood coursed through the veins and arteries, electrical signals passed between all the parts of the body and the brain, the digestive juices flowed in the stomach, and hormones were secreted. Man was a living creature, a living soul.

Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-26. Paul refers to the function as well as the structure of the body in these verses and is using them to describe the church and its relationship to Jesus Christ. After reading the verses, answer the following questions.

14. What does the body have many of? verses 12, 14

15. Who has tempered the members of the body together? verse 24

16. How does He feel about it? verse 18

17. What happens if one member of the body suffers? verse 26

If our head is congested with a cold, we fell miserable all over. If our feet hurt, we only want to put them up and do nothing. Whatever affects one part of the body affects the other parts as well.

18. Name some of the members of the body mentioned by Paul either directly or indirectly.
A. verse 15
B. verse 16
C. verse 17
D. verse 21

19. What can the foot not say to the hand? verse 15

20. What members of the body are necessary? verse 22

21. Paul says that our comely parts have no need. The word "comely" means: pleasant to look at, attractive. What parts of the body do we usually associate with comeliness? 1 Samuel 16:7

The countenance is the face. We humans judge beauty by how pretty the face is, and often how tall an individual is.

22. Paul also states that God has given more honour to those parts which lack comeliness. What members did Paul mention that we usually do not consider comely? 1 Corinthians 12:15, 16

We do not usually consider the feet to be an attractive part of the body, but without feet it is impossible to walk properly. Our feet are the base on which we stand and which we usually take for granted. They do not receive the attention that the face or the stature receive, but our mobility would be very much limited without them. This helps us to understand why Paul said that the uncomely parts receive more honor.

23. What did the apostle John wish for fellow Christians? 3 John 2

John's desire is that all might have health of body, mind, and spirit is equal proportion.

Lesson 3:
In the Image of God

1. What model did God use when He made man? Genesis 1:26

The word image means a resemblance, a representative figure. Likeness means resemblance, model, shape. Man was made to resemble God in all his physical, mental, and spiritual faculties.

2. Of what do we consist? Hebrews 2:14

This verse also points out that just as humans are flesh and blood, Jesus, in becoming like us also became flesh and blood that He might understand our infirmities and weaknesses, and show us how we can live the Christian life.

3. What does the flesh war against? Galatians 5:17

4. What happens if we sow to the flesh? Galatians 6:8

5. If we sow to the Spirit, what will we reap? Galatians 6:8

6. Our bodies are the temple of what? 1 Corinthians 3:16

7. How are we to present our bodies to God? Romans 12:1

8. What kind of living sacrifice are we to make of our bodies? Romans 12:1

9. What does it mean to be holy unto God? Deuteronomy 7:6

10. How can we be holy and acceptable to God? Deuteronomy 28:9

11. Who dwells in us? 1 Corinthians 6:19

12. In our bodies we are to what? 1 Corinthians 6:20

13. Why are we to glorify God in our bodies? 1 Corinthians 6:20

14. How do we present our bodies a living sacrifice? 2 Corinthians 7:1

15. Our sacrifice represents that we have made what with God? Psalm 50:5

16. What is the covenant that we have with God? Hebrews 10:16

17. If the Holy Spirit is living in our body temple, what will we not do? Galatians 5:16

18. What are the works (or lusts) of the flesh? Galatians 5:19-21

As you go through these lessons, you will find that all of these things affect the health of the body, but especially adultery and fornication, uncleanness, hatred, wrath, drunkenness and revellings.

In Israel, a lamb was sacrificed as a representative of the Saviour who would become man's substitute for God said that "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). Only the death of the one who gave the law could make an atonement for the transgression of the law (Hebrews 9:26). When John the Baptist saw Jesus coming to him at the Jordan river, he said, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). Jesus was that sacrificial lamb who would shed His blood for our sins for "without shedding of blood is no remission" of sins. The animals that were used for sacrifices were to be without blemish (Exodus 12:5). When we present our bodies as living sacrifices, "not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing... it should be holy and without blemish" (Ephesians 5:27). Much of the disease suffered by humankind today is brought on by wrong habits of eating, drinking, dressing, and living.

19. God promises what to those who disobey Him? Deuteronomy 28:59

20. What will God not bring upon those who do right in His sight? Exodus 15:26

21. What is God not going to permit in heaven? Revelation 21:27 (first half)

Defileth means to make or consider profane. Our body temples can be defiled or profaned by the things we eat, drink, wear, and do. God asks us to present our bodies to Him without flaws brought on by our own unlawful actions. He knows that some of us are born with blemishes that we are not responsible for having. "Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children" (Psalm 103:13-17). God requires us to obey the laws of our being and maintain our health in as perfect a condition as possible.

22. What will God do to those who defile the temple of God? 1 Corinthians 3:17

23. What has God promised those who obey Him? Exodus 23:25

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Genesis 2:27

Lesson 4: What Shall We Eat?
Part 1: God's Diet Plan

1. When God made Adam and Eve and placed them in Eden, what food did He give them to eat? Genesis 1:29

2. After they ate of the fruit from the forbidden tree and Adam and Eve were evicted from Eden, what was added to their diet? Genesis 3:17,18

3. To whom was the herb of the field originally given for food? Genesis 1:30

God did not make the animals carnivores (meat-eaters) at creation. It came about later as a result of sin.

4. What had God forbidden Adam and Eve to do? Genesis 2:16-17

5. When they were tempted, what did they do? Genesis 3:6

Adam and Eve fell on the point of appetite. The fruit looked so good, and they decided that God had been keeping it from them unfairly. They doubted what God said, and they allowed their appetites to overrule their minds.

6. On what point did Satan first tempt Jesus? Luke 4:3

Jesus had been fasting in the wilderness for 40 days communing with His Father. By the time Satan came to tempt Him, He was very hungry. He picked the time when Jesus would be most susceptible to his suggestions.

7. How did Jesus reply to the devil? Luke 4:4

Jesus was quoting from Deuteronomy 8:3. Remember that Jesus was famished, literally starving for food. It would have been easy for Jesus to change a stone into bread and feed Himself, but He resisted the temptation. Where Adam fell, Jesus triumphed. Adam brought sin into the world by giving into appetite, and Jesus showed that appetite can be overcome, even in the most trying of circumstances. "For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous." Romans 5:19.

8. Why was flesh food permitted in man's diet and when? Genesis 7:21-22

The flood had destroyed the entire world and every living thing on it. When Noah and his family left the ark there were no gardens from which to gather produce. They would have to be planted, grow to maturity, then harvested. In the meantime, they must eat.

God permitted flesh for food for yet another reason. "The imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth." The longer men lived, the more evil they could think of to get into.

9. With the permission to kill animals for food, God also said that He would require what from man for the animals he killed? Genesis 9:5

10. How was man's life span affected after meat-eating was introduced?
Before the flood:
Adam (Genesis 5:5)
Seth (Genesis 5:8)
Jared (Genesis 5:20)
Methuselah (Gen. 5:27)
Noah (Genesis 9:29)
After the flood:
Shem (Genesis 11:10-11)
Arphaxid (Gen. 11:12,13)
Peleg (Gen. 11:18-19)
Terah (Gen. 11:32)
Abraham (Gen. 25:7)
David (Psalm 90:10)

11. What was the size of the people who lived before the flood? Genesis 6:4, first part

Men were of great stature, or height, before the flood.

12. What people did the children of Israel find in the land of Canaan? Deuteronomy 2:10-11

13. About how tall was one of them judging by the length of his bed? Deuteronomy 3:11

A cubit is 18 inches which makes King Og's bed 13 feet long. That is more than twice the average height of man today, several feet taller than the tallest basketball player. The Anakims were destroyed by the Children of Israel until only a few were left in the region of the Philistines who lived along the Mediterranean coast.

14. Who did David kill in battle and how tall was he? 1 Samuel 17:4

A span is half a cubit or 9 inches. Goliath was 9 feet 9 inches tall. His brother, also a giant, was later killed in a battle with Israel (2 Samuel 21:19).

As man partook of a flesh diet, he shrank both in age and in size. Even the Anakims, who were still giants 1000 years after the flood, were getting shorter. King Og was about 13 feet tall, but a few hundred years later one of the last of the Anakims was barely in the 10 foot range.

15. What directions did God give regarding what animals could be used for food and those that were not to be eaten?
Mammals: Leviticus 11:3; Deuteronomy 14:6:
Fish and seafood: Leviticus 11:9-10; Deuteronomy 14:9-10:
Fowl (birds): Deuteronomy 14:11, 12-20; Leviticus 11:13-21:

The unclean animals listed in these verses are the scavengers of the earth. They feed on decaying and rotting matter, garbage, and refuse including the carcasses of other dead animals. They are primarily carnivores. The clean animals which God permitted for food are primarily herbivores or plant eating animals.

16. When was man aware of the difference between clean and unclean animals? Genesis 7:1-2

Seven of each of the clean animals were taken into the ark, while only two of each unclean animal were taken into the ark. Had Noah and his family commenced eating the unclean animals when they came off the ark, those animals would have become extinct for there was only one breeding pair (one male and one female) with which to reproduce themselves.

17. What parts of the animal did God forbid man to eat? Genesis 9:4; Deuteronomy 12:23-25

Noah lived several generations before Abraham who was the beginning of the Jewish race. Yet Noah knew and observed the difference between clean and unclean animals for food.

18. What other parts of the animal were not to be used for food but were burned? Leviticus 1:8-9; 3:3-4

The priests were permitted to use the meat of the sacrifices for food for themselves and their families (see Leviticus 7:22-38) except for the parts that God specified were to be burned. Some parts of the sacrificial animals were to be burned on the altar and some by being carried out of the camp and burned with fire (Leviticus 3:14-15; 4:11). Notice that all the fat was to be burned.

19. What does the New Testament say about the eating of blood? Acts 15:28-29

20. Why was blood forbidden to be eaten? Leviticus 17:11

"Moreover ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings. Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people." Leviticus 7:26-27.

The animals used in the tabernacle sacrifices represented that Jesus would come and die for sinners and shed His blood when He died for us on the cross. The Bible says that without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins. The blood of the animal sacrifices was sprinkled before the veil to represent the blood of Jesus washing away our sins. Because Jesus has come and died, we no longer need to kill animals for sacrifice, for those sacrifices only pointed forward to His death. He has now shed His blood for us, and is pleading that blood for us in heaven.

21. What methods of death prevented an animal being used for food? Leviticus 22:8; Acts 15:20.

An animal killed by another animal or strangled or dead on its own could not have the blood properly drained from its body. The only way to butcher an animal was to cut it's throat and hang it up and allow the blood to drain out.

22. What particular animal did God expressly forbid man to eat? Deuteronomy 14:8

23. How much of the animal is unclean? Leviticus 11:7-8

24. How does God feel about those who use swine's flesh for food? Isaiah 65:4-5

Lesson 5: What Shall We Eat?
Part 2: Food From the King's Table

Before you begin this lesson, take a few minutes to read the first chapter of the book of Daniel. This will familiarize you with the story from which this lesson comes.

1. Who was Daniel? Daniel 1:3

2. What outstanding qualities did Daniel possess that caused him to be chosen for special training in the schools of Babylon? Daniel 1:5

3. What kind of diet did King Nebuchadnezzar order for the students? Daniel 1:4

4. What decision did Daniel make about the diet provided by the king? Daniel 1:8, first part

Daniel and his friends would not defile their bodies with the rich food and drink from the king's table. While the king believed that this was the best diet for his prize pupils, Daniel understood that such food would defile his body. The margin reading for "king's meat" reads "king's delicacies." Nebuchadnezzar did not know the difference between the clean and unclean foods, that "wine is a mocker" (Proverbs 20:1), or that "the life is in the blood."

5. What did Daniel ask for from the prince of eunuchs? Daniel 1:8, last part

6. How did the prince of the eunuchs answer? Daniel 1:10

7. Daniel then turned to Melzar, the eunuch placed over him and his friends and ask for what? Daniel 1:12-13

Pulse is an old word for vegetables.

8. Melzar consented and at the end of 10 days what differences could be seen between the four young men and the rest of the students? Daniel 1:15

9. At the end of the three years' training, when the king called the students before him, what difference did the king see between Daniel and his friends and the other students? Daniel 1:19

10. How much better were they than the others? Daniel 1:20

Daniel and his friends ate a vegetarian diet, and they were ten times better than all the students who ate the king's food by eating the food provided by God in the beginning.

11. What did Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, say about the eating habits of princes? Ecclesiastes 10:17

12. What advice did he give to those who are faced with the same choice that Daniel had to make? Proverbs 23:1-3

13. What did the Children of Israel begin complaining for? Numbers 11:4-6

14. What had they been eating? Numbers 11:7-9

15. What did the manna taste like? Exodus 16:31

16. What kind of food was the manna? Psalm 78:25

17. How badly did they want meat to eat? Psalm 78:18

"And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp" Numbers 11:32.

It was not hunger that made the people stay up grabbing birds for 36 hours, but a craving for flesh food. They had begun murmuring about and desiring the food they had eaten in Egypt, but forgetting that they had been slaves to the Egyptians.

18. What did God do because of their lust and why? Psalm 78:27-31

The Children of Israel had demanded flesh food for they were tired of the manna God was providing (Numbers 11:10-35). The Lord caused a wind to blow, bringing flocks of quail flying into the camp at a low height, allowing them to be easily caught. The people were so gluttonous for the meat that they were heaping the birds up and gorging themselves. As a result a plague went through the camp killing many.

"And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul" Psalm 106:15.

19. What kind of men were the sons of Eli, the high priest of Israel? 1 Samuel 2:12

Belial is another name for Satan and means worthless.

20. What were they in the habit of sending their servant to do? 1 Samuel 2:13,14

21. What else would they send their servant to get? 1 Samuel 2:15

22. What would happen if anyone objected? 2 Samuel 2:16

The priests wanted the meat before the fat had been removed and burned and the remaining blood had been seethed, or boiled, out. They were disobedient of a direct command of God to not eat the blood or the fat.

23. What other kind of sin were Eli's sons guilty of? 1 Samuel 2:22

24. What did God say would happen to them as a result of their disobedience? 1 Samuel 2:34, 36

It happened as God had said. The priesthood was removed from Eli's family and given to another. Eli and his sons all died the same day (see 1 Samuel 4:10-18).

25. What other bad habit is associated with gluttony and the use of flesh food? Proverbs 23:20

26. Where does the lust of the flesh come from? 1 John 2:16

Lust means to covet, crave, be greedy, or to passionately desire something. People can lust for things that in themselves are not harmful or wrong. It is the desire to have it to the exclusion of anything else that constitutes lust.

27. What will finally happen to lust? 1 John 2:17

Lesson 6: What Shall We Eat?
Part 3: Eat That Which Is Good

1. To what city were Daniel and his fellow captives taken? Daniel 1:1

2. Revelation speaks of a Babylon and gives us what warning about it? Revelation 14:8

The Babylon of Revelation is symbolic of a group of people who are opposed to God's government and law. They have wine, "the wine of the wrath of her fornication" and "abundance of delicacies" (Revelation 18:3) such as ancient Babylon had. To have clear minds and healthy bodies we must, like Daniel, not defile the body temple with the wine and delicacies, whether real or spiritual, of Babylon.

The prophet Elijah has been used in the Bible as a symbol of the godly people who will be living on earth just before Jesus comes the second time (Malachi 4:5-6). Elijah went before King Ahab of Israel and pronounced there would be no rain because of the sinfulness of the people. He then hid out as God directed by a brook where ravens fed him.

3. What food was brought to Elijah to eat? 1 Kings 17:6

4. How often did the ravens bring food? 1 Kings 17:6

Elijah ate 2 meals a day, one in the morning and one in the evening.

5. When the brook dried up, where was he sent? 1 Kings 17:9

6. What his diet there? 1 Kings 17:12,13

7. Those who are ready for heaven when Jesus comes the second time will have been eating what kind of food? Isaiah 33:14-17

Just as Elijah, a symbol of those who will be taken to heaven at the Second Coming without seeing death, was eating bread and water, so will those who are translated. They will be eating a simple diet of the foods that God originally gave mankind to eat — fruits, nuts and seeds, grains, and vegetables.

For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come to mind" Isaiah 66:17.

8. What will the animals eat in the new earth? Isaiah 65:25

9. What food will the redeemed be eating in the new earth? Isaiah 65:21

10. What will have happened to those who were eating all kinds of forbidden things and telling themselves that they were holy and pure? Isaiah 66:17

"Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one" (Job 14:4). "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away" (Isaiah 64:6). "Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy" (1 Peter 1:13-16).

11. What advice did Solomon give to those who have a problem with appetite? Proverbs 23:2

Jesus said if your right eye offends you to pluck it out (Matthew 5:29). Neither Solomon or Jesus were saying that we should mutilate or destroy our bodies if we are beset by bad habits. Though gluttony is a slow form of suicide, for the body is getting more than it needs and can beneficially use, through the strength that Christ offers, overeating can be overcome.

12. What is associated with gluttony? Deuteronomy 21:20

13. What was the prescribed punishment? Deuteronomy 21:21

14. What sign relating to food did Jesus say would be evidence of His soon return? Luke 17:28; Matthew 24:37-38

15. What warning did He give us? Luke 21:34

Gluttony is a sign that mankind is living in the time just before Jesus will return to earth to save His faithful children. All the world will be eating and drinking to excess, so He has left a warning on record that His followers are to be careful how they eat and drink, lest they be caught unprepared for His coming.

16. What did an uncontrolled appetite cause Esau to do? Genesis 25:29-34

17. How does the Bible describe Esau? Hebrews 12:16

Daniel and Esau had to make the choice to deny appetite for the sake of physical and spiritual health or to indulge and suffer the consequences of the wrong choice. Esau willingly sold his birthright for a bowl of lentils. Millions today sell their health and shorten their life span needlessly just to gratify the taste buds. Heart attacks kill more Americans than any other disease, yet it can be largely prevented by a diet that is free of cholesterol, low in rich foods, and exercising regularly.

18. What one thing should regulate our appetites? 1 Corinthians 10:31

19. What will happen to the glutton? Proverbs 23:21

20. What sweet does the Bible tell us to eat? Proverbs 24:13

21. How much should we eat? Proverbs 25:27

22. Why shouldn't we eat a lot of it? Proverbs 25:16

This advice applies to all good things to eat, especially those foods which are rich. For example, nuts are high in fat in the form of oil and should be eaten moderately, not in large quantity.

23. What is considered a greater accomplishment than taking a city? Proverbs 16:32

A person who does not control his spirit is controlled by his appetites, passions, and lusts. "He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls" Proverbs 25:28.

24. How was Adam to obtain his food? Genesis 3:17-19

25. What did Paul say about useful employment and obtaining food? 2 Thessalonians 3:10

Note: The poor are always to be helped. See Isaiah 58:6-7; Deuteronomy 24:18-22.

26. What should we avoid buying and what should we eat? Isaiah 55:2

The fatness spoken of here is abundance. It does not mean an abundance of what we clearly know is bad for health, or even things we want to think are good for us. It means those things which God has declared are good for food — namely, fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and legumes (beans and lentils). These can be eaten without fear of cholesterol (the main cause of heart disease), low fiber (responsible for colon cancer), and high sucrose (white sugar that leads to diabetes). Of these you may freely eat, but within moderate guidelines. It is no better to eat too much of what is good than to eat that which is bad.

Lesson 7: What Shall We Eat?
Part 4: A Loaf of Bread

1. How was hospitality shown in Bible times? Genesis 18:3-5

2. What food was specifically offered to guests? Judges 19:5

Bread was offered to travelers and to whomever one wished to show hospitality. See 2 Kings 4:42; Luke 11:5, 6

3. What two kinds of bread were used in ancient times?
A. Exodus 12:39
B. Matthew 13:33

Unleavened bread has no yeast, baking powder or other leavening agent in it to make it rise. The meat (or food) offerings offered in the sanctuary service were usually unleavened. The exception was the offering of the firstfruits. See Leviticus 2:14; Exodus 34:22; Leviticus 2:4; 23:13.

4. What three kinds of grains were grown in the land of Israel? Isaiah 28:25

5. Who gave the recipe for Ezekiel's bread and what are the ingredients? Ezekiel 4:9

Fitches is spelt, a grain not grown much today.

6. Famine is often associated with the lack of what particular kind of food? Genesis 41:35-36

"Moreover he called for a famine upon the land: he brake the whole staff of bread" Psalm 105:16.

Famine is still prevalent in many parts of the world. When aid is sent into areas of famine, the first and most important staple that is sent in is grain of some kind, corn (as we know it today), and wheat. Not only are they cheaper and easier to ship, they have an extended shelf life and contain a better balance of nutrition than meat.

Corn is an old word used for grain. The grain that we now refer to as corn was unknown in Europe until the discovery of the Americas when explorers took samples of native plants and animals back home with them. The term corn was applied to the grain the American natives called maize.

7. What must we have besides bread? Luke 4:4

8. For what are we to labor and how long does it last? John 6:37

9. What food did the children of Israel eat in the desert? John 6:31

That food was a type of the real bread from heaven. The life-giving Spirit, flowing from the infinite fullness of God, is the true manna.

10. What kind of food was it? Psalm 78:24, 25

11. What did Jesus say the Father had sent from heaven? John 6:32

12. What does this bread give to the world? John 6:33

13. What did Jesus say the bread from heaven is? John 6:48

14. What happens when you eat this bread? John 6:35

15. How long can you live by eating this bread? John 6:58

16. What does the bread He gives us represent and why does He give it to us? John 6:51

17. At the last supper Jesus told His disciples the bread He gave them to eat represented what? 1 Corinthians 11:24

18. Why must we "eat" of His "flesh"? John 6:54-56

To eat the flesh and drink the blood of Christ is to receive Him as a personal Saviour, believing that He forgives our sins, and that we are complete in Him. It is by beholding His love, by dwelling upon it, by drinking it in, that we are to become partakers of His nature. What food is to the body, Christ must be to the soul. Food cannot benefit us unless we eat it, unless it becomes a part of our being. So Christ is of no value to us if we do not know Him as a personal Saviour. A theoretical knowledge will do us no good. We must feed upon Him, receive Him into the heart, so that His life becomes our life. His love, His grace, must be assimilated.

19. What is spirit and life? John 6:63

The rabbis themselves had a saying, that the eating of bread, in its spiritual significance, was the study of the law and the practice of good works; and it was often said that at the Messiah's coming all Israel would be fed.

Those who see Christ in His true character, and receive Him into the heart, have everlasting life. It is through the Spirit that Christ dwells in us; and the Spirit of God, received into the heart by faith, is the beginning of the life eternal.

20. Are any words of God referred to as being eaten?
A. Ezekiel 3:1-3
B. Revelation 10:9, 10

The life of Christ that gives life to the world is in His word.

"The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.... More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb" Psalm 19:7, 10.

21. What are we to do when we find the Word of God? Jeremiah 15:16

22. If man does not eat the bread that came down from heaven, what bread is he eating? Proverbs 4:17

23. What kind of famine is going to come on the earth? Amos 8:11

We should not wait for a famine to feel our need of eating the Word of God. By partaking of the Bible each day, we satisfy our spiritual hunger. Now is the day of our salvation.

24. What other kind of bread might the Lord give us to eat? Isaiah 30:20

25. Even if that happens, what has God promised? Isaiah 30:18

Lesson 8: What Shall We Drink?

1. What are we admonished to be? 1 Peter 4:7

"Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober" 1 Thessalonians 5:6.

2. Why must we be sober? 1 Peter 5:8

Sober: Not drunk. Characterized by reason, sanity, or self-control; showing mental or emotional balance.

3. What does the Bible say will destroy sobriety? Proverbs 20:1

"Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder" Proverbs 23:31, 32.

4. What did the use of wine cause two priests to do? Leviticus 10:1

When the sanctuary was dedicated, God Himself sent fire to consume the sacrifice (Leviticus 9:24). This was the holy or sacred fire that was to burn continually and from which the fire in the censors and to burn incense was to come (Exodus 30:9). Aaron's sons used "strange fire" which they had kindled to burn incense in their censors in direct disobedience to God's command. They did so because they were drunk with wine.

5. God commanded that Aaron and his sons Ithamar and Eleazar not do what? Leviticus 10:9

6. Why was this command given? Leviticus 10:10

7. Name other people God told not to drink wine or strong drink?
A. Numbers 6:2-3
B. Luke 1:13-15
C. Judges 13:2-4
D. Proverbs 31:4

8. The Bible says that wine and strong drink are what? Proverbs 20:1

Mocker: have in derision; scorn

Raging: to be in great commotion or tumult; to rage, war, moan, clamor.

9.Who are some other people, besides Nadab and Abihu, who have been ruined by wine or strong drink?
A. Isaiah 28:7
B. 1 Kings 16:8-11
C. 1 Kings 20:16, 20
D. 1 Samuel 25:36, 37
E. Genesis 19:30-38
F. Daniel 5:1-4, 25-30

10. What group of people did God commend for their refusal to drink wine? Jeremiah 35:5-10

11. What are some of the effects of drinking alcoholic beverages?
A. Proverbs 23:29
B. Proverbs 23:21
C. Isaiah 5:11
D. 1 Samuel 25:36
E. Psalm 107:27
F. Isaiah 19:14, last part

12. How will it cause people to act?
A. Isaiah 5:22, 23
B. Isaiah 28:7
C. Proverbs 23:21
D. Genesis 9:21
E. Proverbs 23:35
F. Proverbs 23:33
G. Joel 3:3

13. Who are we not to associate with? Proverbs 23:20

14. What did God have to say to those who serve alcohol to others? Habukkuk 2:15

Woe: great sorrow, grief, misery

"But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea" Matthew 18:6.

15. Did God ever change His prohibition against fermented wine and strong drink? Psalm 89:34

"For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed" Malachi 3:6.

"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever" Hebrews 13:8.

Since God has not changed and says that He will never change, His commands that we not use alcoholic beverages is still in effect today.

16.What did Jesus say about drinking and drunkenness? Luke 21:34

17. Jesus told us what will happen to the drunkards? Luke 12:45, 46

18. Would Jesus, who was God in the flesh, sin? Zephaniah 3:5

19. Did Jesus drink fermented wine? Mark 15:23

"And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar" Mark 24:36.

Jesus refused to use anything that would have altered His mental capacity and thinking. Vinegar is, as the Bible margin and the dictionary state, sour wine.

John 2:1-11 records the story of the marriage feast in Cana where Jesus turned water into wine. We know that God never changes; He is the same forever, and His word stands forever. Therefore the wine that Jesus furnished at the feast was not fermented, but was the pure juice of grapes. Jesus came to do the will of His Father (John 5:30) and would not have disobeyed God's word by giving them fermented wine.

20. Will there be drunkards in heaven? Galatians 5:21

21. As we prepare for Christ's second coming, what have we been told not to do? Romans 13:13

"Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ" 1 Peter 1:13.
