Below are some web sites on which you can find some helpful information about cooking in general, vegetarianism, and buying hard-to-find foods. Most of these sites are not Adventist and may contain information not in harmony with the health message of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Should you find something offensive, please notify me by email. Thank you.

These are vegetarian sites with information and recipes.

http://www.lundberg.com/
They grow and sell all kinds of rice and rice products. They also state that they do not use genetically engineered seed. Can't yet order on-line, but you can see a list of their products and print out an order form to mail in.

A great vegetarian food guide pyramid is at the top of the page. Please overlook the blurb to the side about alcohol use, as we believe in total abstainence from alcoholic beverages.

For more information on Genetic engineering, bio-engineered foods, and related information, you can look at these web sites.

You can read these documents for further information:

This is principally a links page to other sites and documents about genetically altered food. It appears that some of the documents come from outside North America. Everywhere GM foods have been introduced, there has been protest of some degree.

The following articles are from Lancet, the British medical journal.

This article is pro-GM, but contains information about the process.

This list of animal products contains more than food ingredients. It also gives brief descriptions.

Food Additives

http://www.additives.8m.com/english.htm
Food additives guide. Don't know what an ingredient is? Check here. Just looking over this site shows it is well done. Gives good information about food additives, tells what countries a substance is banned in, etc. If you click on recipes, you aren't getting cooking instructions, but a list of additives that are typical in processed foods like breads and soups. This site is well worth checking out. Just one word of caution: there is a pop-up screen with links on it that confused me as it pops up the same size as a second window opening. You can tell it from the window because it has no menu bar across the top.

An example of what I found at this site. I see this ingredient listed in a lot of baked goods, but I didn't know anything about it. Now I know to avoid it. L-Cystein: flour treatment agent derived from animal hair and chicken feather.

http://www.cspinet.org/additives/
The Center for Science in the Public Interest's Food Additives page links to their own articles on addditives. Their Chemical Cuisine page is very good.

Here's a site for the lands down under.
http://203.55.94.175/
ANZFA -- Australia New Zealand Food Authority. Seems to be a lot of information about food for Aussies, including information on GM foods. At least they have some labeling requirements which is more than the US has.

IF you want to know what brand food items contain genetically engineered products (corn, soy, etc.) you will find a list at this site.

http://www.truefoodnow.org/shoppinglist.html

For more information on GMO crops also check

http://www.truefoodnow.org/

Both these sites are hosted and maintained by the environmentalist group Greenpeace. As with other sites listed here, there may be objectionable things here, but the food list is the only one I have found anywhere (and that is thanks to someone on another forum.)

More and more vegetarian websites are appearing online.

In A Vegetarian Kitchen with Nava Atlas.

quote:
Nava Atlas is the author and illustrator of many books on vegetarian cooking. The best known are Vegetariana, Vegetarian Soups for all Seasons, Vegetarian Express and Vegetarian Celebrations. Her articles on healthy cooking with natural foods have appeared in Vegetarian Times, Veggie Life, Great Life, and other magazines and newspapers.

Nava has also written humor and is active as a fine artist. Her work has been shown in galleries and museums around the country. She enjoys exploring, hiking, reading, daydreaming, the ocean and chocolate. Her home is in the Hudson Valley region of New York State, where she lives with her husband and two school-aged sons.

I have two of her cookbooks. This looks like a good site.
