Well, nobody can accuse Big Guy of "unmitigated gall," can they. (I wasn't trying to say Ikan's fat; just a big fellow is all. The kind of guy I never liked to see-saw with as a kid!) And it's something how the lifestyle can lower those numbers, eh.....after I quit smoking, drinking, gave up meat & dairy, my blood pressure & cholesterol dropped back to what they were 25 yrs. ago.

So John-san and Ikan-san are buddies from waaaay back? Cool!
You quit dairy products too? Is there anything at all to eat when you go out? Do you take vitamins? The owner of Country Life here in Osaka was vegan a long time, and had to take huge needles full of B-12. He gave up Christianity tho, so doubt he's much worried about the animals now....
Ikan-san, just a thot --- can you use old clothes there? I've been sending 20kg boxes of used clothes to India etc., and could send some your way if desired. Japanese used clothes are very well made, but maybe don't suit your climate there???

No, didn't mean that -- met him here on this forum. Just meant that he's a big guy, and when I was a kid I was skin & bones. Big guys on the see-saw would send me flying back then. Anyway.
Yeah, am nearly vegan -- gave up all dairy about 2 years ago, but still eat egg whites on occasion. Egg Beaters, and pre-made veggie entrees with egg white ingredients. Eat lots of soy stuff, and drink lots of soymilk. Even have a bag of edamame in the freezer right now -- guess you see that a lot in Nippon!
No need to take vitamins so far. Vitamin-fortified soymilk, vitamin-fortified breakfast cereals and a decent varied vegan diet does just fine. I do use a fair amount of the meat analogs....Tofurky, Worthington, that stuff. And Tofutti soy 'cheese'. The people at the health food store have commented that I look healthier than most vegans (or near vegans) they see. Some look hollow, pale, unhealthy they say. I don't really know what I'm doing so differently from those folks, but so far no problems.
And since giving up dairy I've lost about 15 pounds (of excess that needed to come off) and it's not hard to keep it off. That cow stuff's fattening. Never get sick either.

Well, considering I live in the Jungle, there's always something fruiting, hundreds of different veggies and exotic fruits (winged beans, two-foot long green beans that curl like a snake, 3 different kinds of yams, so many greens, I can't remember them all, ferns, papayas, mangos, a hundred types of bananas, etc.) and herbs and spices, well this is the Spice Islands! This is more like the Eden Plan, ecology-wise, here in the Tropic Equator zone.
The Chinese are tofu and gluten kings; I eat gluten "chicken" or "beef" that is so realistically textured, I thought the cooks were making a fool of me and using real animals!
