To me; those last two sentences make it a situation of being threatened..."choose God or burn mentality"...reminiscent of Jonathan Edwards.

How does it strike you?

I agree with David in the sense that fear shouldn't be used to bring a person to reaching a right decision for the wrong reason.

I am not saying that this was the intent of the author of Linda's quote.

What does a right decision for the wrong reason amount to?

I suppose that if I was the author, I would have written those sentences differently. It is written in a particular style which is why the sentences are written in the manner they are.

I don't know who the author is as no citation was given for the original work. I don't think there is enough of the fear modality in this piece to be a big problem.

I agree with you Linda as truth is necessary whether it produces fear or not.

Should we suppress a portion of truth because it may produce a fearful response from somebody?

Can you imagine the fear that entered into the church over William Miller's 1844 message which was thought to have been the truth at that time?

Why do you suppose so many left the faith after the Great Disappointment?

It is one thing to present truth that may be fearful.

It is another thing to present the same truth for the sole purpose of scaring people into making a decision for Christ.

Sometimes I think that we water down the truth just a little too much becuase we are afraid of being accused of "scaring people into heaven". But, I think that if we do not tell the truth about the consequences then we are at fault for not telling the truth.

I agree with all the posts so far. I look at it this way. If my kid is running out onto the street, and I see a car headed right for him; am I going to sit there and talk nice, because I don't want to scare him? No. I'm going to yell at the top of my lungs: "STOP!"

I think God is the same way with us. he sees us heading in the wrong direction, and sometimes if a diaster is headed towards us: he has to yell: "fear God; and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgement is come!"

It is important to know Truths like what will happen if we take a certain wrong course.
