Hi, All!
It has been just over three weeks since my husband, Dedreic, has left to go south to be a ornithology lecturer on a passenger cruise ship in the Antarctic. In some regards he has become an "Antarctic Wonder" along with the penguins as I usually have had only abbreviated phone calls with him and in the three e-mails he sent he has shared very few details (No fair!). He says it is so I can be captivated totally when he shows me the slides he has taken (did I tell you how many film he took...one for everyday he is away! I have no idea when we will be able to afford to get tham all developed!!!)
He has told me, however, that he has seen a list of "lifers" that is as long as his arm. He has had the sad fortune of getting sea sick. He has met many wonderful people. And he wants to move to South America.
Dedreic learns much from Nature. For him nature truly is God's second bible. He writes this in his last e-mail:
"Being here has put me in a place where deep thinking is possible... just like being on islands... I know that is not why I go to islands, to be able to think, it is a benefit, but not the reason why I go each year,.. but here, this place, Antarctica, it's a whole new thinking world... down here, by the time Steve and I unload the passengers off the zodiacs, there is no
one left around to talk nature with so I wander off by myself, wow... try walking amoungst hundreds of thousands of penguins by yourself, it almost feels out of body..."
Can you imagine? HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of PENGUINS! That would be so awesome! He has mentioned that we are so much like penguins just trying to carry out life successfully. Currently the penguins are nesting so he can see the tender care they put into their activities. How much we could learn from the penguins!
I can hardly wait for the details! I will keep you posted if I hear more!
